Jaquan looked up at the man standing by the window. Light and shadow fell on him, and no one knew what he was thinking.
“You listen to what Nelson says.”
Outside, there was some debate, but Callie wasn’t paying much attention. She only knew that Marilyn had returned.
She suddenly realized many things, like the person Lucia met was her. And that Nelson returned to the country early because of her. The memory of that white bra now made sense.
So that’s how it was.
Knowing the truth, Callie felt her heart ached. She instinctively covered her mouth to keep from crying out loud.
Nelson stood outside, finishing a cigarette. His large hand gripped the door handle. “Jaquan, may I use your bathroom?”
Callie froze, pressing hard against the door.
If he found out she was here, everything would be over.
Jaquan quickly looked over. Nelson had already applied force and felt resistance. He raised an eyebrow. “Is someone in there?”
Callie closed her eyes, feeling hopeless.
At that moment, Mikayla walked in, catching Jaquan’s gaze. She immediately said, “Mr. Oconnor, the door is broken. I just called someone to fix it. Please don’t mind.” She picked up a pack of wet wipes and handed them to him. “Make do with these.”
Nelson paused slightly, then retracted his gaze. “Thank you.”
He used the wet wipes to clean each finger meticulously. “A few days ago, a shipment at Ylosea port was intercepted early in the morning. The authorities are investigating. I got word it belonged to Scott Group and covered it up for you, but the follow-up might be troublesome.”
Jaquan lay on the hospital bed. “I already got the news. Don’t worry, Nelson. I owe you one for this favor. I’m investigating who made the mistake internally.”
Nelson smiled faintly. “You should investigate. If you hadn’t been in a car accident that day, I would have thought it was your decision.”
“Then I should really thank that car accident for giving me an alibi.”
“Jaquan, you’re always very lucky,” Nelson said meaningfully. “But in business, luck isn’t enough.”
He turned slightly, not sure who he was addressing. “Good luck is occasional.”
After finishing a bowl of porridge, Marilyn carefully put it away and asked softly, “I’ve had the kitchen at home make different kinds of porridge for you these days. You should rest and recover.”
Jaquan didn’t take the bait this time. “Marilyn, you’re so good to me. Doesn’t Nelson get jealous?”
Nelson had his back to them and didn’t see Marilyn’s cheeks turn red as she whispered, “What nonsense are you talking about…”
After everyone left, the room quieted down. A bodyguard came in to report, “She has been sent to the parking lot.”
Jaquan then looked up. “Aren’t you coming out?”
After a moment, Callie composed herself and walked out silently, her face pale.
Jaquan’s heart sank as he tried to get up. “Callie.”
“I’m leaving,” she said calmly. Halfway out, she realized her bag was on the sofa in plain sight. Had Nelson seen it?
He probably wouldn’t notice her belongings.
“Wait a moment,” Jaquan said, wanting to say more.
Callie picked up her bag. “It’s already humiliating enough. If you mock me further, that’s too much.”
“No, I…” He watched helplessly as she walked out of the room before he could finish his sentence. Her departing figure was one of utter despair.
Nothing is more heartbreaking than catching your husband with another woman in an intimate setting.
