Today, there were very few vehicles on the road. Callie only realized how heavy the rain was after she went out.
The driver, trembling, reminded her, “Miss, don’t rush. The roads are slippery when it rains.”
When she returned to her place and just got out of the car, someone pushed through the crowd towards her. His steps were unsteady, completely unlike his usual composed self. He walked straight up to Callie and spoke in a heavy voice, “Are you Miss Marsh?”
Callie recognized him, “You’re Jaquan’s secretary.”
“Yes, my name is Mikayla Morrow,” Mikayla said anxiously. “I need you to come with me; it’s urgent.”
His tone was very forceful.
“What happened?” She sensed something was wrong.
Mikayla took two steps forward and lowered his voice so only Callie could hear, “I received a message at dawn. Mr. Scott had a car accident and is now in the hospital undergoing emergency treatment.”
His voice was shaky, clearly affected, “You attended the banquet with him, so I thought, no matter what, I must take you to the hospital.”
Callie looked at Mikayla in disbelief and uttered two words, “Car accident?”
Yes, a car accident.
Last night, during the heavy rain, Jaquan recklessly drove at 180 miles per hour. The car skidded and couldn’t stop. When he turned the steering wheel, the car plunged straight into the river.
Fortunately, it was already daylight, and a jogger on the riverside witnessed the scene. With a sense of heroism, they shouted for help and jumped in with a large rock to smash the car window.
When Jaquan was rescued, he was covered in blood and unconscious.
Hospitals are probably the least favorite places for most people. They witness death daily, along with all the helplessness and fear in the world.
Callie wore a camel-colored trench coat when she went out. Mikayla gave her a baseball cap and a mask.
She followed him through the bustling crowd and then through eerie silence, hearing him whisper to her, “After the accident, I immediately contacted Mr. Scott’s private doctor. They are still abroad and can only provide remote guidance to the hospital doctors.”
Callie walked briskly, listening expressionlessly.
“Miss Marsh, I beg you to see him. I’ve been by his side for so long. He has few friends and even fewer women who are important to him. You are one of them. Even if you can’t do much, just being there would be good for him. It would give him peace of mind.”
Was she that important to him?
Callie was puzzled, “But I’m not the one he likes.” Why not find Marilyn? Is she still abroad?
Mikayla looked at her and gritted his teeth before saying reluctantly, “This might be the last time.”
The last time. Callie thought about it and quickened her pace. The further she walked, the heavier her heart felt.
Why did he go out in the middle of the night? Was it because he heard her and Nelson? It couldn’t be.
When they arrived, the operating room door was still closed. The red “In Surgery” sign was glaring.
Facing this scene, Callie finally realized one thing-Jaquan might die?
She shivered all over, unable to stop feeling cold.
“Have you notified his family?” Callie suddenly felt her throat tighten and spoke slowly.
“Not yet. I’m afraid they won’t be able to handle it.”
Callie turned around and noticed someone sitting outside the operating room-a sturdy young man waiting anxiously. This must be the person who saved Jaquan.
Her eyes fell on the glaring red blood on his body. Callie felt something pierce her heart. Her hands trembled and she couldn’t move for a long time.
So much blood.
