Regan remembered and looked at her.
Callie, hearing the noise from the inner room, was about to come out but was stopped by Regan’s hand gesture. She remained silent.
Regan watched as the other woman took a red ring box out of her pocket. She stepped forward, opened it, and said, “I found this on the bedside table this morning. I figured you might need it today, so I brought it over. Do you want to check it?”
Her words were skillfully crafted, hinting at a story that could easily lead to wild imaginations.
She added, “Don’t tell Isaac I came. He’ll be angry if he knows.”
It was a man’s ring, one that Regan had personally bought. It wasn’t expensive, but Isaac treasured it.
From Callie’s perspective, she thought Regan would be angry. But she wasn’t. Regan politely took the ring from the woman’s hand and thanked her, “Thank you for bringing it over. You could have called me; I would have picked it up.”
Callie was surprised by Regan’s composure. In the past, she would have torn the person apart.
“You should know, he can’t stand loneliness. Do you think he’ll still come to me after your wedding? Honestly, as long as it’s him, I don’t mind being the other woman,” the woman said with a brazen smile.
Callie was shocked by her audacity. Were mistresses always this bold?
Regan remained calm. “Alright, you can come and show off then.”
The woman left.
Callie walked out nervously. Regan still showed no sign of distress. “Well…”
Before she could finish, Isaac entered, and Callie fell silent.
He said, “Regan, it’s about to start. It might be a bit tiring.”
Regan handed him the ring. “The ring you’ve been looking for was brought over. Shouldn’t you explain?”
Callie didn’t expect her to be so direct.
Isaac paused, lowered his gaze, took the ring, and put it on his ring finger. “Sorry, I was called over that day and left it there.”
“It won’t happen again,” Regan said with a smile.
After the people left, Callie grabbed Regan’s arm. “Why aren’t you angry?”
“Angry about what?” Regan asked, puzzled. “I’m not in a position to be angry right now.”
Neither family attended Isaac and Regan’s wedding.
Regan walked down the aisle alone to stand beside him. It should have been a touching scene, but Callie found it eerie. She looked at Isaac, who seemed honest but had a strange look in his eyes. She instinctively felt he wasn’t a good man.
“Wonder if she’s jumping into a fire pit,” she whispered.
Jaquan, sitting next to her and peeling an orange, said, “You should have thought that when you married Nelson.”
Callie couldn’t help but smack his arm. “You really know how to talk.”
Jaquan smiled indulgently and fed her an orange slice. “Don’t worry. At least Isaac can solve her big problems.”
This scene caught the attention of a man across the room. His secretary trembled slightly. “Mr. Oconnor, should we…”
“Let her be,” Nelson said, staring at them with a tight voice. He took a sip of his drink, his eyes deep and dark.
