Tobias pressed his lips together, sensing her stress. “Did something happen?”
Her dry eyes became moist again.
Callie was on the verge of breaking down. “I want to know the exact time. I’ve been waiting for three years, no, four years. Tobias, how much longer do I have to wait?”
Nelson’s words still echoed in her ears. If she divorced, he would cut off Reuben’s treatment.
“Callie, Callie.” Tobias couldn’t hold back anymore and gave her a hug. “Soon, really, trust me.”
Callie finally found someone to lean on and softened, clutching Tobias’s shirt and crying softly.
She was too exhausted to move. Tobias took her to his office and let her rest on the sofa. He guessed something had happened but didn’t dare to ask at that moment.
Callie didn’t know when she fell asleep. She looked peaceful in her sleep, her profile slightly chubby like a baby’s. Tobias watched her, lost in thought. The head nurse barged in clumsily. “Dr. Tobias…”
She stopped abruptly. “This is…”
Tobias stood up immediately. “What’s wrong? Do you need something?”
“Here, sign this.” The head nurse was elderly and could tell what was going on with a glance. She looked at Callie. “I remember, she seems to be married, right?”
Tobias’s face darkened. “Yes.”
The head nurse sighed. “This doesn’t look good.”
“Hey, my sister’s daughter is very pretty and also a doctor. How about I set you two up?”
“Forget it.” Tobias signed the document. “I’m not interested in blind dates.”
“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. With your qualifications, you can find any woman you want. Take my advice and let it go.”
An outsider sees things clearly.
Tobias put away the pen, feeling a bit lost. “I can’t let it go.”
Callie woke up in the afternoon, her whole body aching. The first person she saw was Tobias, working at his computer. Sunlight fell on him, making him look almost divine.
Tobias felt her gaze and smiled. “Why are you staring at me?”
Callie rubbed her neck. “Just admiring the angelic glow of someone who saves lives.”
“Have something to eat. I just ordered takeout, and the soup is still hot.” Tobias smiled and brought the food over.
“I’m not hungry.” She was still downcast and not in high spirits. “I should go now, Tobias. Thank you for taking me in.”
“Callie!” Tobias called out to her.
“Don’t force yourself too much. If you ever face difficulties, come to me anytime. I’ll always be your safe haven.”
At that moment, his words were like a shot of adrenaline, and Callie smiled.
She didn’t return to Paucaster Villa Complex but checked into a hotel instead. Nelson didn’t send anyone to look for her, probably knowing she couldn’t leave Ylosea and decided to let her be.
The early spring night had already fallen.
The city outside was still bustling, time seemingly frozen in the long lines of car lights.
The room was dimly lit. Callie sat on the hotel window seat with her knees hugged to her chest, her long hair falling over her shoulders and covering half of her face. In the half-light, her beauty was still evident.
She glanced outside and could see the expansive view.
Suddenly, she remembered the last time she had argued with Nelson and went to watch a movie with Jett. Afterward, she used his card to shop, and he didn’t get angry but kept raising her credit limit repeatedly. To make him jealous, she even sought out Jaquan.
In the end, Nelson pinned her down on the bed repeatedly. That was when she felt most moved; she could clearly feel that this man was gradually being good to her.
