Nelson chuckled softly and held her tightly, “Let’s go home.”
Callie hadn’t drunk any alcohol, but Nelson had, and quite a lot.
As they neared their destination, Nelson signaled the driver to stop, “Walk with me.”
She was wearing high heels today, so the man found a pair of flat shoes from the car for her to change into and led her out.
It was eleven o’clock, and the moon hung high in the sky.
The moonlight was bright, casting a thin layer of frost-like light on the road. Their shadows, holding hands, stretched long and winding.
The discomfort in his chest from drinking was blown away by the wind. There were no noisy traffic sounds or the rush of handling matters, just peace and tranquility.
Many wealthy people lived nearby. Occasionally, a car would roar past, carrying young men and women. A girl smoking a cigarette had her hair blown wildly by the wind and boldly shouted at Nelson, “Hey, you’re handsome!”
She looked no older than eighteen. After shouting, she was pulled back by the boy beside her, “Stop it.”
Nelson smiled faintly. Callie glared at him with slight annoyance, “Is she pretty?”
His smile deepened, “Not as pretty as you.”
Callie didn’t say much. She could guess that Nelson probably had something on his mind today, maybe related to Lucia, but he didn’t want to talk about it.
She held his large hand tightly and followed him step by step, “Nelson, am I your wife?”
He turned his head, “Of course.”
She smiled, “Yes, at least nominally. So no matter what happens, you can tell me. Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”
Her innocent appearance looked very sincere under the streetlight.
Nelson didn’t answer directly; he just held her hand tighter, “I have to help her.”
Callie understood and had no objections, “Okay.”
They hadn’t walked far when they encountered the same car again; it seemed to have broken down and was parked by the roadside.
They weren’t in a hurry. The two people sat on the road humming songs.
Callie laughed.
The girl recognized them and walked over after patting her pants. She took out a cigarette from her pack and offered it, “Handsome guy, can you fix cars?”
Nelson didn’t take it. He rolled up his shirt sleeves to his elbows, “Is your car broken?”
The driver who had been following them slowly in the car stopped and got out when he saw his boss’s signal.
“Help them out.”
The driver found some tools from the back of the car.
The girl’s eyes were full of heart-shaped bubbles, “Wow, handsome guy, do you have a girlfriend? Or a boyfriend?”
The driver stumbled.
Callie understood the joke and leaned close to Nelson’s ear to explain.
It roughly meant that someone as good-looking as him must not like girls.
Nelson didn’t like this assumption. He raised their clasped hands and announced openly, “This is my wife.”
There was no need to hide; it felt very different to announce their relationship so openly.
The heart-shaped bubbles in the girl’s eyes disappeared. She pouted, “Don’t show PDA in front of me.”
Finally, she suddenly looked up and stared at Nelson suspiciously, “You look familiar.”
She thought for a while but couldn’t remember and gave up.
At this moment, Callie received a call from Tobias.
She hesitated for a moment. Nelson looked at her leisurely, “Answer it.”
She had no choice but to answer nervously, “Tobias, what’s up?”
There was a brief silence on the other end before he spoke, “It’s like this. Now that the New Year is over, do you want to send your father back to the hospital? I need to make arrangements on my end.”
Reuben’s condition was very stable. After moving into Paucaster Villa Complex, he had even improved. Callie had previously discussed with Nelson and decided to let him stay at Paucaster Villa Complex for a while longer.
