Lilith’s POV
Getting out of the bathtub, I dried my body with the white towel which was hanging on a rod, behind the bathroom door.
I wasn’t looking forward to dinner, even though I would be closer to Adams. Sitting alongside his brothers was worse than a nightmare as I just couldn’t stand them, especially when they fought or argued over anything.
I walked towards the wardrobe to pick a dress when I remembered Clara. I hadn’t seen her in weeks and it made me wonder where she was.
Probably she was working in the kitchen full time, since Adams had been all nosy about my business, I decided to check up on her, on my way to dinner.
I smiled at his jealousy, and the way he treated and pampered me like the queen I was. He also stopped me from training with Dale, promising to train me himself.
After searching for minutes without seeing anything I liked, I closed the wardrobe with force and something, tied in a black nylon fell from the top.
I was about to leave the room when I heard it sound, so I turned back to check what it was.
The nylon was huge, as though it contained so many items so, I bent down and loosened it at the top where it was tied.
Opening it, I dipped my hands inside to check out it’s content and brought out a short red gown. It was so beautiful, I was tempted to try it on, which I did.
“Did Adams get it for me? Or someone else?” I wondered aloud.
“How about you wear it for dinner, listen to what he has to say,” Lex whispered inwardly.
I nodded my head, tied the other things which I didn’t bother to check and put it back from where it fell, concluding it was a good idea to wear the cloth and stepped out of the room.
I strode towards the kitchen first, in search of Clara. Getting there, I overheard the kitchen maids talking, and I hid behind a door to listen to them.
Judging from the sound of their voices, there had to be five maids in the kitchen.
“What do you think has happened to them? They have been missing all day.” One spoke, her voice like the sound of the wind on a calm sea, gentle and low.
“I don’t know,” replied another in hushed tone. “Since the Alpha called them for doing something wrong, they were probably being punished.”
“But why?” A third voice spoke with hatred lacing her vocals. “They didn’t do anything wrong, they only spoke the truth.”
“You should shut up before someone hears you saying those words. Why didn’t you speak the truth instead and get arrested, uhn?” An entirely different voice spoke, making the rest mummur among themselves.
I wondered who it was they were speaking off, and what exactly happened? Curiosity almost made me come out of my hiding place, to confront them, and ask them questions, but I remained glued to the spot. As the fifth voice spoke with so much authority, I heard the other maids scurried away.
“It seems as though you all want your tongues cut off, right? Whatever Lydia and Aria face as consequences for their big mouth was well deserved. Now, get to work!”
I assumed she was the chief maid due to how quickly the maids respected her and dispersed. If only I had that power, to make people tremble and fall at my feet, it would have been awesome.
Taking in a deep breath, I let it out before leaving my hiding position, and revealed myself to everyone in the kitchen.
I scanned the place quickly, before approaching the maids in the kitchen.
“Your majesty,” they all said, falling to their knees.
“Please, rise,” I said and they all did as they were told.
“Dinner is about to be served, my queen. You should be at the dining table by now,” the chief maid spoke with a weird expression on her face.
It was as if she hated me, despite the fake smile on her face which I saw through easily.
“Yes… I know where I should be without being told, I only came to the kitchen to check on the workers, and see how well you are all doing.”
“We appreciate the kindness your majesty, we are doing well as you can see.” She spoke with an air of pride. It made me wonder what she would do if she was the queen.
I smiled and turned around to leave. Having walked a bit to the door, I turned back and faced her. “You haven’t seen Clara, have you?”
“Uh… no my queen, we haven’t seen her,” she replied.
I nodded my head and turned to leave again when one of the girls called me, “my queen.”
I looked towards the direction of where the voice came from and saw the face of a beautiful young lady staring directly at me.
She was the same person with the calm soothing voice and immediately my heart warmed up to her.
She had a pair of ocean blue eyes which drowned me in them. “Yes, young lady, do you know something?”
“Uh… yes my queen, I don’t know where Clara is, but I know what happened to her.”
As she spoke, I noticed the chief maid sending occasional glances at her, as if to warn her not to speak.
“Speak up sweetheart,” I whispered, moving closer to her.
“O… okay.” I noticed her shaky hands and feet, almost every part of her body trembled uncontrollably. “She no longer works here my lady, the Alpha sent her packing.”
“What? Adams? Adams would never do that.”
He knew how much I loved the maid, and how well she took care of me. Why then would he want her gone? Or rather, why then would he send her way as she was no longer there with us?
“What is your name?” I demanded, standing directly before her.
She looked very young, at most 18 years of age. It made me wonder what she was doing in the mansion, working as a maid. Where were her parents? Didn’t she have family?
“My name is Sheila, my queen,” she replied with a trembling voice.
I had a lot of things to ask her, a lot of things to say to her. “Meet me in my room Sheila, after dinner. We would speak then.”
I stormed out of the kitchen angrily, and headed towards the dining room. Getting to the dining room, I stopped, seeing Ronan beside Adams, and Adams was lost in thoughts with his eyes closed.
His brothers weren’t there, which would have made me happy, had I not thought of Clara.
I interrupted his thoughts, and we all settled down to eat when I brought up Lydia and Aria’s matter. Surprisingly, they both replied, in the negative, and continued eating without a care.
“What about Clara? What did you do to her?” I asked, almost raising my voice.
“I didn’t do anything to Clara, what about her?”
“Didn’t you relieve her of her position as my maid, why would you do something like that? Uhn!” I yelled, almost on the verge of tears.
He had this confused look on his face like I was speaking an alien language he had never heard before.
“I don’t know what you are talking about Lilith, I never sent Clara away, I thought you did. I’ve also wanted to ask, but now that you brought it up I just want you to know I have nothing to do with it. Where did you hear this nonsense from anyway?”
“It was from a maid in the kitchen,” I whispered, staring into his eyes, to know if he was telling the truth.
“Which maid?” He demanded, his fist curled into a ball.
“Sheila.”
He looked at Ronan, who nodded, and stood up in haste. The next minute, Sheila was dragged in, amidst tears.
She trembled before us, falling to her knees. “Forgive me my King, but I don’t know what I did.” She pleaded and cried, so much, I felt pity for her.
I looked at Adams, to scold him but stopped, noticing the angry look in his eyes.
“Who told you that I sent Clara away, Sheila?” He demanded from her, his voice deeper than a well, making anyone who heard it tremble down to his or her bones.
“I… I…”
“Speak up!” He growled, making her fall to the floor in fright.
“It w… was the chief maid, she sent her packing some weeks ago, claiming it was on your orders, my king,” she spoke with a shaky voice.
