JESSICA
When I hear the banging on the door, I instantly fear for Luke. He faced off against Sydney and now Sydney is inside. What happened to Luke? Is he in danger? I pray that he is safe. Not that I can really do much to help. Sydney doesn’t plan on leaving this cabin without me. How did he even find me?
“Jess, baby get out here.” He calls through the door. “Don’t make this any harder than it needs to be.”
“Just leave me alone Sydney. Please, just go back to your life and leave me alone.” I can feel the tears on my face that I didn’t even realize I had started crying. “What happened to Luke?”
“Oh, is that your Prince Charming’s name? I really could care less. He is dealing with Chip, you remember Chip don’t you?”
I do remember Chip, he is huge. He was also the one that was in charge of my captivity. I only managed to get away because Chip was sick that day. “Just leave him alone.”
“I’ll leave him alone if you get your ass out here.” Reeko is growling at the door, he doesn’t want to let that man anywhere near me. I don’t want to go anywhere near him either.
“How do I know that you haven’t already hurt him?”
“Because I am telling you. Have I ever gone back on my word?”
“Yes, all the time.” I scream through the door. He has never once followed through on anything that he has said to me.
“Jess, get your ass out here before I break down the door. If I have to do that, then you won’t like it.”
“I am not coming out until I know that Luke is safe.” I will trade myself for him. He has been nothing but perfect to me and I don’t want to drag him into my stuff. If I can save him then I will.
“This isn’t a negotiation. Get your ass out here or I am coming in to get you.”
I don’t answer, holding my ground. I even managed to move the dresser in front of the door. He starts pounding on the door again. Reeko barks and growls. I still manage through all the noise to hear the siren sounds. I can’t help but feel relieved, knowing that Luke’s brother has arrived on time.
Sydney isn’t happy about it, he starts cursing and pounding harder on the door. I know he isn’t going to get in here before Luke’s brother can stop him. When I hear two gunshots I scream in terror. I never expected Sydney to go that far. But the shots were aimed at the door. I can see the wood splintering around the lock. Thankfully none of the bullets hit me.
I can hear scuffling and cursing, and finally after several minutes a new voice. “You are safe to come out, miss.”
I have to move the dresser to get back out of the room. When I get the door open I see a man in uniform, sitting on Sydney’s back. Sydney looks up at me and spits out. “Tell this asshole that I am here to get you.”
I glare back. “Yeah, you are, but not with my permission. I told you that I don’t want anything to do with you. We aren’t together anymore. Stop following me everywhere. Stop telling people that I am your wife. Just stop. I don’t want to do this anymore.”
The guy in uniform nods. “That is all I needed to hear. Now I have you for trespassing and breaking and entering. Assaulting a police officer. I am sure I can find something else. So I am afraid you aren’t walking away this time.”
Sydney thinks he can pull a fast one. “This is my cabin.”
The uniformed cop laughs. “You know, that might have worked on some rookie, but this is my cabin, so that isn’t going to fly here.”
I rush outside to see if Luke is alright. I see him pacing the front yard. Chip is cuffed and kneeling waiting for the officer to come back. I am sure he was just following orders like always. He doesn’t really seem like a bad guy. Just a guy stuck in a crap situation. I ran into Luke’s waiting arms. “I am so glad that he didn’t hurt you.” I cry as I squeeze him tight.
He holds me back just as tight. “I heard gunshots. Are you alright?”
“I’m fine. Reeko is fine.” He doesn’t stop holding me. It feels so comforting to be here. I barely know Luke, but he is the only person I have felt this safe with in two years.
I can hear Sydney cursing Luke’s brother. “You have no idea who you are fucking with. I will have your badge. Then I will have you begging me for your next scrap of food.” I don’t know how Sydney thinks he is this big of a big shot, but he does. Which is probably why me telling him no was a big no no for him.
Luke grins at his brother. “He really has no idea who you are.”
His brother smiles. “I think it’s funny. Except the big pain in my ass this is, because I was home with my girlfriend. And then I had to leave her to come here and deal with this crap.”
Sydney looks at me in Luke’s arms. “Get away from her. No one can touch her but me.” He screams. Luke just holds me tighter.
“She isn’t yours. She is a free human being and she isn’t going to be yours again. She doesn’t want to be with you. Haven’t you gotten that yet? How long does she have to run from you for you to know that she isn’t interested?”
The brother is done with the conversation though and is pulling Sydney away from us towards his squad car. I am sure he will get Chip next.
“Jessica, I will come for you. You are mine. You always will be.” He yells and kicks. I am sure that Luke’s brother has to be used to this in order to handle Sydney right now. He is luging him. Almost dragging him to the squad car.
I look up at Luke. “Are you sure you are alright?”
He just laughs. “Yeah, I’m great. My brother showed up right on time. Mr. Big and Tall was going to rough me up a little, but as soon as my brother showed he let me go.”
His brother comes back. “Alright, have a seat, we are going to have to wait for backup. I had to call this in, because shots were fired and I had to make an arrest. Since this is my property I have to be the one to file the charges. So another officer is going to come and take my statement as well as both of yours. It is going to be long and boring but it has to be done.”
I shutter. “I am so sorry. I didn’t want to cause problems for anyone. I have been running for so long I didn’t know what else to do. Luke offered to help me last night and I jumped at the chance to have a normal life again. Now I feel awful that I am putting you both through this.”
Luke just shrugs. “This is kind of what William does. He is a hero. He throws himself in danger and hopes for the best.”
William chuckles. “Funny. Let me get this big guy in the car too. I need to read them both their rights. I am sure they will get read again, but I have to cover my own ass.”
“I don’t know his last name but his first name is Chip, he is the hired hand of Sydney. I don’t think he is really a bad guy, but he does what Sydney wants.”
William nods. “I’ll keep that in mind. I don’t think it will change much. He still has assault charges for his actions towards my brother. He didn’t break and enter. So he has that going for him.”
After that there is a lot of sitting around and questions being thrown around. It was actually four other officers who came and took Sydney and Chip, but I don’t hold out a lot of hope that they will be staying behind bars. For some reason Sydney always finds a way out. At least for tonight I know that I am safe.
