Green could not understand what was happening to him; he was sitting one moment and the next he was being held by the collar, and Cade’s grip was strong. “Cade,” Ophelai let out slowly. He looked at her; the sleeping pill he had slipped into her drink was already working, and he wondered how his carefully thought-out plan was failing so woefully.
“Ophelia?” Cade said, leaving his collar and turning to her. He held her before she could slip off the chair. “Open your eyes,” he said, shaking her gently.
She shook gently in his hands. Cade lifted his eyes, and they met Green, who just stood in the corner watching Cade hold Ophelia in his hand. “What did you do to her?” Cade asked. His tone was harsh and low.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, why does she like this?” Cade followed up, squaring his jaw.
“Like how? You mean drunk? We had a few drinks, so she is drunk,” he said, thinking it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“I have seen her drunk at least two times, and she had never once passed out while being drunk. I can bet myself on it that you definitely slipped something into her drink,” he said.
“That is just a false accusation,” Green said, crossing his hands over his chest. He was sure that there was no way that Cade would try to prove that he had spiked her drink. If he cared as much for her as his eyes were telling, then he would definitely be more concerned with taking care of her instead of trying to turn him into a criminal.
“Ophelia, open your eyes,” Cade turned to her and began tapping her cheeks lightly. Ophelia made a sound from the back of her throat and began breathing steadily like a child who had been put to bed.
“She’s just sleeping,” Green said. He was just a bit relieved that this had not gone the wrong way and that she was okay. If Cade were to find out that he had done something like this, he was sure that he would not like the end of it. “She does that sometimes when she is very drunk,” he added. It was a lie, and he knew but he was not going to tell the truth. Cade should believe him; after all, he had known her longer than he.
“See, I do into knowing what you are planning, but I have to assure you that it would definitely not work, so better save face now while you can.”
“Planning?” Green scoffed and moved back to sit in the chair he had been dragged out of. “What are you so insecure about? This is just two friends chatting and catching up with each other,” Green added and shrugged before taking his glass and taking down the entire contents.
“Insecure? I wish this was all a feeling in my head but it is very different.”
“Buddy, check yourself and do not project your emotions on me.”
“If this is not some scheme, why did you send Harper to my house while Ophelia was out here with you?” Cade based. He had been squatting and using his body to support Ophelia as she slept soundly.
“Send her to your house? What would I gain by doing that?” Green asked as if Cade was just being ridiculous and making unreasonable claims.
“Who knows what you are planning to gain?” Cade added before standing, his body still close so Ophelia could use him as a pillow. He turned to her and shook his head. He did not want to have this conversation with Green again, and he needed to take Ophelai home and make sure that she was fine. He carried her in his arms bridal style and left the bar without a word.
Green sat there a bit pissed. He wondered what Harper had done-that their plan had not left the first stage before failing. He picked up his phone and called Harper up, and after calling her multiple times, she finally picked up, and she was drunk.
“You are drunk!” Green screamed into the phone in annoyance. “You were supposed to get him drunk in to get drunk by yourself.”
“Why are you screaming at me? I tried my best,” Harper said, chewing the inside of her mouth as she yawned.
“Yur best? Your best was giving Cade inside information about our plan? How is this your best?”
“Can we talk when you will no longer shout at me?”
“What do you mean…” Green now noticed that he was talking into an empty line. “F**k!” he screamed as he slammed his fist to the table. Everyone in the bar looked at him and looked away almost immediately. It was like he was not worth their time.
Cade carried Ophelia into her room and dropped her to the bed. “What do I do with you?” he whispered as he watched her sleep so soundly like she had no care in the world.
He went to bed after dropping some aspirin and water for her on the table. He was not sure what was the right thing to do, but he was sure that Green had done something to the drink. He was going to try and find out what had happened with her by morning to make sure that everything was okay.
Cade woke up to pounding on his door. He struggled to open his eyes; his eyes landed on the clock that was sitting on the bedside. “Three thirty am?” he murmured to himself as he pushed himself off the bed. He ran his hand through his hair as he walked to the door. He pulled the door open and was faced by an angry-looking Ophelia.
“What are you doing here? By this time of the night?” he asked with a yawn escaping his lips.
“If you wish to be treated with respect, then don’t you think you should also learn to respect others first?”
“Respect? What respect?” This was not the time to be going on and on about some fight; they were supposed to be sleeping in their beds and not at each other’s necks.
“WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR EX DOING SLEEPING SOUNDLY IN OUR LIVING ROOM?”
“Holy Shit!”
