The surgery dragged on longer and longer, and the people outside the emergency room grew increasingly anxious.
Bryce frowned at the emergency room door, wondering if he had seen Sylvia go in. Could she handle it? Such a high-risk surgery, could she really do it? Brain surgery was no joke.
Mrs. Hogan was also in shock, “It seemed like Mrs. Maskelyne went in? Can she perform surgery? Does she know neurosurgery?”
Luca was equally puzzled, “I don’t know… I don’t know anything…”
He knew very little about Sylvia, only that she was Franklin’s wife and that the President didn’t like her.
“She once had a stellar reputation at the First Hospital of H Rovirsa, known as the top surgeon,” Franklin said calmly, his tone carrying an inexplicable pressure.
The others fell silent upon hearing this. After all, he was now the President’s son.
Bryce still had his doubts, “Mrs. Maskelyne looks very young, and this surgery is extremely risky…”
“So you can wait for our hospital’s neurosurgeon to arrive, but by then, who knows what condition Miss Hogan will be in…” Franklin’s voice was cold as he glanced at Bryce before focusing back on the emergency room door.
For those who didn’t believe in Sylvia, there was no point in saying more. His words were clear: you could tell Sylvia to stop the surgery as a family member, but would you dare?
He was certain Bryce wouldn’t risk Olivia’s life.
Indeed, Bryce didn’t fully trust Sylvia, but there was no suitable doctor available now. He could only wait anxiously, enduring the psychological torment.
Time slowly passed. About an hour went by in tense waiting.
At this moment, the head of neurosurgery received the hospital’s notification and hurried back from outside. He was a middle-aged man in his forties, panting as he rushed to the emergency room with his assistants and interns. “Where’s the patient? What’s the current situation?”
A nurse from the emergency room quickly approached him, “Director, Dr. Sylvia has already started handling it. You can take a break.”
“Who is Dr. Sylvia?” The neurosurgery director was puzzled but soon became furious. “Didn’t you say it was urgent? Lives are at stake! How can you let an unqualified doctor in? Every department has different responsibilities and expertise! What are you doing?”
The nurse turned pale, “This was… instructed by higher-ups. I don’t know the details… Should you go in?”
The neurosurgery director angrily replied, “I’ll go in right now. I’ll get ready!”
Hearing that the neurosurgery director was going in, the Hogan family members felt a sense of relief, thinking Olivia might be saved.
Soon, the director prepared himself and entered the operating room. He immediately noticed a slender figure skillfully performing the surgery. Every movement was precise and standard, and the operation was nearing completion.
The slender figure explained each incision to the other doctors and nurses assisting in the emergency room. Her voice was soft but detailed.
The director was stunned after listening for a while because he realized that although this woman was very young, she was extremely professional.
However, he thought that some people were just knowledgeable in theory but not necessarily skilled in practice. But when he looked at the surgery again, he found it to be perfect; every detail was handled exceptionally well.
This scene completely exceeded his expectations. He was shocked! When did the hospital have such an outstanding young neurosurgeon? She was undoubtedly a rising star in neurosurgery!
He didn’t dare to interrupt during the surgery, so he stood silently aside, waiting. His interns cautiously observed his expression, “Professor, what’s wrong? Why aren’t you going over?”
They had expected to see their professor take over the surgery knife. Why was he standing there motionless?
The director waved them off, “Watch carefully and listen closely; she’s excellent.”
Hearing this, the interns were stunned and didn’t dare to speak further.
After about another half hour, the surgery finally ended. Sylvia looked around at her colleagues with some fatigue, “We’re done.”
The finishing touches were quickly completed, and doctors and nurses began to leave one by one. They turned around to find the neurosurgery director and his interns standing not far away.
“Director? When did you get here?”
The director smiled, “Never mind how I got here. Introduce this doctor to me. How come I didn’t know we had such an outstanding young talent in neurosurgery?”
“Hello, I’m Sylvia. Sorry for not informing you earlier; I had my mentor apply for permission since the patient is my friend,” Sylvia introduced herself respectfully and explained why she took over the surgery.
“Your mentor? Who is it?” The director grew more curious.
“Oh, Professor Juan,” Sylvia said nonchalantly. “I’m from hematology.”
“Hematology…” The director was shocked. “Then how come you’re so good at surgery?”
Such a talented surgeon going into hematology made him feel a bit heartbroken.
“I used to be in surgery,” Sylvia smiled. “Everyone’s tired; let’s head out.”
She started to leave, but the director became increasingly reluctant to let her go. He quickly blocked her path, “Would you consider transferring departments? You’d be great in neurosurgery. My position could be yours in the future. All these young doctors under me would be yours to manage.”
Such a talented young doctor must be recruited!
Sylvia shook her head, “My sister has acute leukemia, so I went into hematology.”
The director felt a pang of sadness, “I see…”
But he hadn’t given up yet. If not today, he’d try again another day.
Olivia was wheeled out of the emergency room by nurses, and the Hogan family immediately surrounded her.
“How did the surgery go?”
“Was it successful?”
“Did the director perform it?”
Their barrage of questions overwhelmed the nurse.
“No, Dr. Sylvia did everything. The surgery was very successful.”
“The patient needs to be monitored for forty-eight hours and will be taken to ICU now. Please make way.”
Bryce looked at Olivia’s pale face and her head wrapped in bandages with a heartache. Because of the brain surgery, her long hair had been shaved off…
This scene deeply affected everyone in the Hogan family.
“My poor daughter…” Mrs. Hogan cried out, “Why is fate so cruel!”
“Oh my God, stop crying already! It’s just hair; it’ll grow back,” Luca said irritably.
As they were grieving, they saw Sylvia and a group of medical staff coming out.
They were about to inquire about Olivia’s condition when they noticed the neurosurgery director enthusiastically talking to Sylvia with an attitude that shocked everyone.
“Dr. Sylvia, won’t you reconsider joining our department?”
“Dr. Sylvia, with your talent, it’s a pity not to perform surgeries…”
“Don’t you feel itchy hands? In future emergencies like today’s, you’d need approval each time to operate; how inconvenient!”
However, Sylvia kept smiling politely as she replied softly, “No thank you.”
The Hogan family was dumbfounded.
Finally, Franklin stood up from his seat and walked over to Sylvia. His deep voice resonated warmly, “Tired? Have some water.”
He handed her a cup of warm water.
Sylvia took it and drank a couple of sips, “I’m okay; just my legs are a bit sore from standing.”
Bryce then approached her cautiously, “Dr. Sylvia, my sister…”
Sylvia responded directly and concisely, “The surgery was very successful, but there might be sequelae such as amnesia or other issues due to brain damage.”
“What other issues?” Bryce felt a bad premonition.
“For example, blindness or deafness… These are common postoperative complications of brain injuries,” Sylvia explained expressionlessly. “Let’s see how she is when she wakes up.”
“Does that mean my daughter will be disabled? Was your surgery not good enough?” Mrs. Hogan screamed hysterically. “It must be your fault!”
The neurosurgery director immediately defended her, “Madam, watch your words! She is an exceptionally talented and capable doctor. I can vouch for her; she’s telling the truth.”
Franklin sneered coldly and looked at Mrs. Hogan with icy eyes, “Shut your mouth and don’t let me hear any insults towards my wife again.”
Mrs. Hogan felt Franklin’s powerful aura and immediately lost some of her momentum. She angrily shut her mouth but continued cursing internally.
“She can’t be visited in ICU; you can see her through the window or go home to rest,” Sylvia said before turning to leave.
After spending half the night here, she was exhausted.
Almost no one noticed that she had a small bag of blood samples hidden in her pocket.
Franklin gave one last look at the Hogan family before following Sylvia out.
The other doctors and nurses gave some final instructions before going back to their duties.
After all, who would want to deal with a family acting like mad dogs? They wanted to live longer!
