Avery tried to snatch the phone away upon seeing it, but a bodyguard of Egbert’s intervened. That phone contained Avery’s main Facebook account and a complete record of our chats.
From the very beginning, when Avery borrowed money from me to enroll in a course on how to pretend to be a socialite, to her continuous affairs after marriage and her attempts to transfer assets, everything was saved on my phone.
She also frequented various bars at night, splurging with Egbert’s credit card and occasionally taking a few male models she liked back home.
Mostly, she bragged about these escapades to me, but how Egbert felt about them, I could only guess.
After all, I was the one being blamed for her actions.
His complexion grew increasingly grim.
Earlier, one of his men who had gone to check the surveillance footage had brought back something else. Bernard’s hotel booking records for the past three years.
Egbert pored over the records and finally came across Avery’s name, who had repeatedly registered in the same room with Bernard over the last six months.
He closed his eyes tightly, inhaled deeply, and then grasped Avery by the neck, demanding, “What is this?”
Avery’s face turned red from the chokehold until a police officer stepped in and pulled Egbert away.
After being rescued, Avery coughed violently and gasped for air. After catching her breath, she flipped through the hotel records and saw numerous entries of Bernard booking rooms with various women.
Her eyes, previously red from crying, now glared at Bernard with a mix of rage and distortion.
With the truth exposed and the police restraining Egbert, she stepped forward and slapped Bernard hard. “You said I was your first woman, didn’t you? You said you never touched another woman besides me, so what is this?”
“You promised that once I transferred his assets, you would marry me and move abroad. What have you been doing? Sleeping with other women every day?”
Avery cried until her voice was hoarse and piercing.
“Do you really believe such things? You’re over thirty and still so gullible. What makes you think you’re special? I only said those things because I wanted to sleep with you, but now I truly regret ever knowing you,” Bernard spoke coldly as he rubbed his face.
“If it weren’t for me sleeping with you, I wouldn’t have killed Madam Alcott who raised me, nor would I have had to fight with my best friend. You’re nothing but a curse and a disaster. Anyone who gets involved with you is doomed.”
As Egbert struggled to charge at Bernard, a police officer forcefully held him back.
Avery lunged at Bernard again, pushing and biting, until Bernard pushed her away, causing her to fall to the ground.
Bernard snorted, “You really disgust me.”
“Egbert, what a fool I was to have considered you my best friend for so many years. Screw you!” Egbert, restrained by the police, glared at Bernard with venomous hatred in his eyes.
Facing Egbert, Bernard apologized with pangs of guilt, “I’m sorry, bro.”
When I left the police station, it was already morning. The air was fresher outside, and the sunlight was bright.
Unfortunately, I was the only one who saw this sunshine.
Avery and Bernard were detained on suspicion of intentional homicide, while Egbert was also temporarily incarcerated for his crimes.
Later, while lying at home playing with my phone, the local news caught my attention. Bernard had been sentenced to twenty years in prison, while Avery and Egbert were released after just a few days.
Years later, I never heard from Avery again.
After getting out of the police station the other day, Archibald also tried to contact me. I blocked all his contacts, moved, and changed jobs, never to contact him again.
