He walked beside me, explaining, “Don’t get the wrong idea. I didn’t come with her; I just ran into her at the construction site entrance.”
I tilted my head to look at him and said, “Can’t you tell? She’s here to see you.”
He glanced back at Lila, and I followed his gaze. Lila’s eyes were filled with tears as she pitifully jogged behind us.
Her high heel accidentally stepped on a small stone, causing her to fall. She simply sat there and started crying.
I sighed, “The boss’s daughter fell. Aren’t you going to help her up?”
He looked at me seriously and said, “I’ll help her if you’re not angry. Right now, I only care about your feelings.”
I was speechless.
George, who was busy nearby, was startled by Lila’s crying and quickly ran over to help her up. Unfortunately, he didn’t receive any gratitude; Lila shook off his hand.
“Who asked you to help? Can’t you see anything?”
George realized she had fallen on purpose for Laurence to see and immediately showed an exasperated expression before letting go of her hand.
Originally supported by George, Lila lost her balance when he suddenly let go and truly fell this time.
George didn’t help her again but quickly caught up with us. He looked at the lunchbox in Laurence’s hand and said, “It’s lunchtime. Thanks for bringing us lunch.”
He grabbed the lunchbox from Laurence’s hand and joined us in an open area where we spread out the food.
The lunch was quite sumptuous. Laurence had prepared four dishes and a soup, all in generous portions.
He kept serving me food while warning George, “Take less. I made this for my girlfriend.”
George snatched a piece of fish, making Laurence so angry that he took the entire box of fish and placed it protectively in front of me.
In the three years I’d been with Laurence, he had always been cool and composed. I’d rarely seen this childish side of him.
The scene made me laugh out loud.
Meanwhile, not far from us, Lila was crying on the phone, “Dad, I want to go home.”
“Send a helicopter to pick me up right now.”
She said it haltingly through her sobs.
The nearby workers didn’t know she was the boss’s daughter and mimicked her in high-pitched voices: “Dad, I want to go home.”
After mimicking her, they burst into laughter.
Lila was furious.
I couldn’t stand it anymore and went over to help her up.
She stared at me in surprise and suddenly asked, “Don’t you hate me?”
I hadn’t expected her to ask that and honestly replied, “I don’t hate you, but I don’t like you either.”
She snorted proudly and said, “Who wants you to like me? I don’t like you either.”
Then she glanced at Laurence with some defeat and said, “I wanted Laurence to like me, but he likes you.”
“Kiki, I can’t break you two apart. He came all the way here for you and cooks for you. I’ve lost.”
“I won’t come between you two anymore. Cherish your relationship.”
