The Family’s Villa
Xenia Zhao carried a bowl of steaming hot soup to a room on the second story.
“Rorey, can your Mom come in?” Her voice was cautious.
There was no movement or sound from the room. She frowned and then opened the door gently. She walked in.
The light was not turned on, and the entire room was pitch-black.
Xenia Zhao instinctively reached out to press the switch on the wall. But a cold voice rang out.
“Don’t turn on the light!”
Xenia Zhao’s heart trembled, and she immediately retracted her hand. Then, she stared with widened eyes, searching for something in this dark room.
“Rorey, Mama made you some soup. Eat it up, okay?”
“I said I won’t have it.”
“But… ”
Xenia Zhao took a step forward and wanted to say more when something was suddenly hurled at her feet. She was so startled that she screamed. The bowl in her hands fell to the floor since she was unable to hold it firmly.
It shattered, and the soup was all spilled.
“Get the hell out of here!”
The voice rebuked her ruthlessly, full of coldness.
Xenia Zhao could not help but be enraged. She turned around and took a quick step forward, turning on the light with a loud click.
The dark room suddenly lit up.
Xenia Zhao could now see clearly the person huddling on the bed. She walked over with a livid face and scolded her daughter. “Rorey, why are you so useless? It’s just Yunis, right? Must you cheapen yourself over such a man? Even if you died, Yunis wouldn’t give you another look.”
Rorey on the bed was totally disheveled and lifeless. She no longer resembled the lively, high-spirited girl of the past.
When she saw how her daughter looked, Xenia Zhao’s fury subsided somewhat. She was, after all, her own daughter.
She sighed and sat on the edge of the bed, grasping Rorey’s hand with a pained expression. “Rorey, if you continue to be despondent, everything we did in the past will come to nothing.”
“Although your dad is still in a coma, Rosiley is already preparing to send him to the US for treatment. He might wake up one day. Then, he will know about our plan.”
When she heard this, Rorey finally reacted. She raised her head and glared at her mother with astonishment in her eyes.
“Don’t be surprised. Mama is telling the truth. If you continue to wallow in despondency, Rosiley will only laugh at you. She will get more and more complacent until you are left with nothing. Then, you will be the butt of jokes forever.”
Rorey heard her words, and the expression in her eyes looked more and more grim.
When Xenia Zhao saw that she was listening attentively, she patted her hand and stood up. “Rorey, do whatever you like. Not only will Mama help you, so will the others.”
After she said this, Xenia Zhao turned around to pick up the broken soup bowl on the floor. Rorey’s voice came from behind. “I’m sorry, Mom. I made you worried.”
When she heard this, the rims of Xenia Zhao’s eyes turned red instantly. She turned around and said resolutely to Rorey, “Rorey, don’t worry. Mama will surely help you regain the Group, no matter the price.”
She did not know if it was her delusion or not, but Rorey felt like her mother had turned into a different person from the timid, hesitant woman of the past. She had become unusually resolute.
“Mom, how will you help me?” This was something Rorey was very curious about.
“I will look for your Dad… ” The moment she opened her mouth, Xenia Zhao immediately sensed that she had said the wrong thing. She corrected herself. “You will know when the time comes.”
After that, she quickly turned around and walked to the spot where she had dropped the soup bowl, squatting down to pick up the broken pieces.
Behind her on the bed, Rorey’s leaden eyes were staring at her, lost in thought.
