Diego’s POV
“What do you want?” Kamara grumbled rudely on the other end.
“Like I would want anything from you.” I retorted, sucking my teeth. “I just needed to be sure you are where you should be.”
She snorted. “Like you don’t have enough spies doing your bidding. Do I look like a leash dog to you? Obviously, you have nothing else to say to me. Which implies the end of discussion.”
And just like that the line went dead. My hand gripped the phone tightly. I am going to deal with her.
“Trouble in paradise?” Fernando asked, throwing peanuts into his mouth.
“That Kamara girl is so rude.” I hissed
“Someone that I think you truly deserve.”
“You are stupid.”
“Could say the same for you. Moreover, why did you lie about us traveling to Nana when we are right here in Atlanta?”
I shifted in my chair, crossing my legs. “If Nana finds out that I am engaging in any kind of brawl with the Mancini brothers she would have a fit.”
“I feel crazy right now that I am actually involved with you in this mess. You know what that family did to yours. Shouldn’t you be wary of them?”
“Revenge is the only thing that I hold dear to my heart against those bastards.”
“Diego.” There was a softened touch to the way he called my name. “Let our boys handle the transaction. If they arrive here and find out it was all us from the start. Either one of us will be dead.”
“Well, my men are also humans with families and are very well-loved at home. So, no, I am not risking their lives to save mine.”
Now that I think about it I shouldn’t have brought Fernando over. He has his way of knowing the things that I indulge in. I have had the Mancini brothers on my list for years. When I heard that they had their shipment on the US shores. I wasn’t about to let the opportunity pass me. I had it seized and called them out for negotiations which is more of a death trap.
“As it stands I think I will gladly choose another profession,” Fernando whined still chewing voraciously on the peanut.
“Didn’t you just finish a whole meal? Why are you eating that?”
“Call it a dessert. I need to up my sugar level, I am about to lose my mind.”
I frowned in confusion. “What nonsense are you on about?”
“Don’t bother me.” He groaned and spread himself out on the bed. “This is so comfy but not as much as the one at home. I want to go home so bad.”
“The door is opened. No one asked you to come here.”
“You are just a bad person. No other way around it. So tell me, how do you plan on living under the same roof with your baby mama.” There was a twinkle in his eye at the end of his words.
“You moron, she is my surrogate. I would expect you to know that.”
“But you knocked her up physically which makes her your baby mama. You both have control over the child.”
“You had better fasten your mind. I might decide to have you killed alongside the Mancini if you don’t hold that stupid mouth of yours back.”
He snorted. “Just answer the damn question.”
I shrugged. “Is there supposed to be a special way of being around her? I don’t care about whatever she indulges in as long as my child is birthed safely.”
Fernando did a thing with his mouth and hummed. “Well, if you say so. I just hope you don’t act so brash towards her. Pregnant women are delicate.”
“Oh, no. There is nothing delicate about Kamara. She is a witch. You need to have heard the way she spoke to me just now. Even though she is aware of what I am capable of doing, she still throws shade at me.”
“My kind of woman.” He grinned.
“I am most amused by Nana. She is so happy to have Kamara at the house. And to my knowledge her friend also.”
“Chantelle?” There was a hint of excitement in his voice.
“Don’t even think about it. The fact that you remember her name smells like trouble to me.”
“It doesn’t concern you. Stop meddling.” He raised his head looking dreamy all of a sudden. “I can’t wait to meet her again. She has my heart racing.”
I rolled my eyes letting out a sigh. I needed an excuse to not be in the house when Kamara finally arrived. Probably it has to do with the guilt I am feeling for this huge lie I am telling. I can only hope the truth doesn’t get leaked until all of this is over. Nana hates being lied to and she wouldn’t hesitate to turn away from me to prove her point.
“Are you worried she would find out?” Fernando asked, obviously referring to what we are about to do now.
“I bet if we can clear the Mancini brothers, she wouldn’t even catch a glimpse of what went wrong.”
“So you are confident?”
I thinned my eyes at him. “Is there something you know that I don’t?”
“Listen, Diego. What we are about to do now is dangerous. Don’t forget that I do not mind doing anything with you. I am just concerned. We have more priorities now. And that includes your unborn child and Nana, what if we get this over with and they come after your family? You know this never ends well. If we fight these folks we are practically going after the whole of Sicily. I bet we should give it time and just have their goods mishandled instead of them. So we retaliate when they make a move. That way it doesn’t seem like we are the troublemakers. Let’s just go down to Miami where we really do have a business to handle. Save us the hassle. ”
I sighed thinking through his advice. Fernando is right. Nana will throw a fit if she knows I messed with Sicily. I am so pumped to get back at them.
“So am I just going to shake hands with them?” I asked, not satisfied.
“Wouldn’t need to. Our flight is ready.”
I raised a brow. “You had it all planned out?”
Fernando snickered, “You will have regrets and I didn’t want you to put that on me. So yes, I had it planned. The Mancini’s wouldn’t have made it here anyway. They have a bigger problem to deal with.”
I held a confused expression. “Did you do something?”
Like a badass, he winked and lighted a cigar taking a long puff. “They wouldn’t know what hit them.”
I couldn’t resist the laugh that rumbled through my insides. This is why Fernando will be my forever ride or die. “You are one hell of a man.”
“No doubt. I am not about to lose anyone who matters to me. So are you ready for Miami.”
“More than ready.” I chuckled, grabbing my jacket.
