KAZMIR
Since there was nothin’ I could do ’bout it, I let her be. Only in the meantime ’cause there was no way she’d stay in the same house with that man.
A man who I suspected the same way he suspected me. What could I do? I paced the large livin’ room in the mornin’ of another day, heavin’ a sigh from time to time as I thought ’bout the incident from a few days ago in the compound of a house Lysander lives in.
Who does he think he is?
I fell on one of the couches and heaved a sigh.
What can I do?
How do I brin’ the woman back to the house? I thought ’bout it and sipped water from the glass in my hand, realizin’ also how hungry I was and at the same time, recallin’ I didn’t have somethin’ to eat the night before.
Finally, I got on my feet and walked to the end of the room, catchin’ up with the kitchen entrance.
In less than an hour, my first meal of the day was ready. I walked out of the kitchen with a tray of the meal, relaxin’ on one of the chairs at the dinin’ table and thinkin’ ’bout it: what could Lysander be doin’ to my wife? I shouldn’t be thinkin’ ’bout it, so I faced my meal and went ’bout lookin’ at the screen of my phone.
Suddenly, a call came in.
I looked at the screen of the phone again, catchin’ sight of an incomin’ call from Ember.
What does she want this time?
If she helped with goin’ to speak with Nyssa, shouldn’t the woman be back at the house? I wondered, heavin’ a sigh and automatically rejectin’ the call.
“I don’t want to talk with you, ’cause I have nothin’ to say to you.” I mouthed as I placed the phone on the table and went ’bout my tasks, attendin’ a meetin’ from the comfort of my home.
Soon, I completed eatin’ my meal and started another journey to the kitchen.
The tray and dishes were washed before I came back to the livin’ room where I sat, with many thoughts runnin’ around in my head.
My phone started beepin’ again, makin’ me stand on my feet and head to the dinin’ table where it had been.
When I caught up with the table, it was a call from Ember. “What do you want?” I picked up the call, placed the phone in my ear, and then asked. “Why do you keep callin’ me? Are you lost or somethin’?” I walked back to the livin’ room, takin’ a seat on the couch and heavin’ a sigh. “Why are you callin’ me, Ember? Do you know I don’t have all day?”
“I haven’t even called you more than three times, Mr. Draven. What is the matter with you? Is it wrong for me to reach out to you?” She asked me who was becomin’ very impatient. “I wanted to know the situation, Mr. Draven. Nothin’ more.” She added and I smiled, wonderin’ also why she should care ’bout the situation of things when at the same time, she can’t help in the smallest way asked of her.
“What do you mean ‘situation’? Is there somethin’ I am missin’ out on?” I got on my feet, and turned on the television switch before takin’ my seat on the couch again. “Nyssa is not back, if that’s what you want to hear. She refused to come back with me and I don’t know what I am expected to do ’bout it. Maybe if you helped me as you were asked, we wouldn’t be here. I’ll be in this house with my wife and there’ll be peace.”
I heard a chuckle from the other end, and then a cough. “I can’t do somethin’ I don’t know its root, Mr. Draven. I’m sure you’d refuse if you were also in my shoes. Won’t you? You should tell me what the matter is before I embark on such a journey and I’m certain you don’t need to be reminded ’bout the fact that we didn’t have such an agreement. I have my contract and in the same way, you have a copy of it. Why not check it?”
Was this all she could say?
I took the phone off my ear and looked at its screen. “Don’t call my line until I call yours, Ember. Ensure to have a good day.” And with the words, I ended the call, throwin’ the mobile device on the couch and lookin’ up to see the screen of the large television.
For the rest of the day, I spent time in the livin’ room. Late in the evenin’, I got up and turned off the television, leadin’ my way back to the couch so that I could take my phone after which I walked to the stairs so that I could go into the room I used to share with Nyssa. When this was achieved, I shut the door, and grabbed a towel from the wardrobe before headin’ to the bathroom for a bath.
The night had come.
I was ready for my meal but wasn’t dressed yet. I was ’bout to open the wardrobe when there was a sound in the room. It was a call – from an unsaved contact. I walked to the bed where the device was dropped and then picked it up, wonderin’ at the same time what the call was ’bout, as well as not recallin’ the last time an unsaved number, reached out to me.
Must be an emergency.
I picked up the call and placed the phone in my ear. “How can I help you? Good evenin’.” I sat on the bed, coverin’ up myself with the towel. I noticed the noises from the background, wonderin’ what kind of emergency it was ’bout this time around. “Can you even hear me?!” Fear crept into my bones and I jumped on my feet, waitin’ for the person from the other end to say somethin’ – anythin’.
“Mr. Draven!” It was a womanly voice that sounded from the other end. “Your wife, Nyssa Draven is here with us in the hospital. She was involved in a home accident and gave us your contact so that we can reach out to you. Can you come to the hospital?”
“Wh-what happened to her?”
“It’s a minor accident, like I said. The hospital address can be seen on our profile when you click on the contact after this call. We expect you soon.”
And the call ended, causin’ me to rush to the wardrobe where the clothes I needed were selected. The next moment, I rushed out of the room, shuttin’ the door and hurryin’ down the stairs.
How did she even know my contact?
This and many other thoughts ran around in my head, and I caught up with the entrance in moments, walkin’ out and lockin’ up before catchin’ up with the car. I was out of the compound in moments, drivin’ through with aid from my map, while I looked forward to the moment I would arrive at the hospital.
It didn’t take long for me to get there, and I hopped down without drivin’ through the gate. It was a secure place and location, after all.
When I was done with the worker at the reception, I was let into the ward where Nyssa was, mopin’ at her figure on the bed and her eyes that were shut.
They suddenly opened.
“Baby?”
I walked closer and took a seat on the chair not so far from the bed.
“I’m ne’er goin’ to let a thing like this happen to you again. I promise you this.” Our gazes locked and she held onto my hands the very next instant.
