“If it’s a work-related injury, the company has a dedicated department to handle such cases,” Ulric reassured her calmly, his expression as composed as if they were discussing the weather.
Rosalind couldn’t help but feel a twinge of doubt about Ulric’s true concern for Sirena, despite knowing his tattoo and the password to his house.
“But aren’t you… friends?” she asked.
“In that case, are you planning to visit her with me?” Ulric inquired.
Rosalind shook her head vigorously. “I’ve been quite busy lately.”
“Busy with the project in Malcolm’s hands?” Ulric paused, holding his milk cup and looking at her.
“Not only that. I’m also working on the SNS project with Cedric.”
Under Ulric’s gaze, Rosalind didn’t feel guilty in the slightest.
“Alright, do your best,” Ulric replied, not saying anything more. After finishing breakfast, they both went their separate ways to work.
…
At the hospital, Sirena had just awakened from her acute appendicitis surgery.
Her vision was still a bit blurry, but she noticed a figure standing before her.
“Ulric…” Sirena called out, her voice weak.
In response, the figure turned around.
It was Johnny.
“You finally decided to open your eyes. If you hadn’t woken up soon, I would’ve called the doctor!” Johnny exclaimed.
Not finding the person she loved, Sirena slowly closed her eyes and pursed her dry lips.
“Is it just you?” she asked.
“Yeah! I stayed with you all night. See these dark circles under my eyes?” Johnny began to ramble.
Sirena felt a faint pain in her lower abdomen, but it didn’t compare to the ache in her heart.
She couldn’t believe that despite all her hard work for Ulric, he wasn’t there when she woke up!
“Thank you.” Sirena always maintained a polite distance from Johnny due to the longstanding friendship between the Chow and Walters families. She worried that getting too close to Johnny might displease Ulric’s parents, as no parents would accept a daughter-in-law with rumors surrounding her.
Everything she did was in preparation for marrying Ulric.
“We’re friends, no need to thank me!” Johnny, seemingly carefree, was actually quite diligent in taking care of others. “Do you want some water? The doctor said you can’t eat anything for now.”
Sirena shook her head, her delicate face pale and devoid of color.
“If there’s anything you need, just let me know.”
“I want you to call Ulric,” Sirena requested.
Johnny understood what she meant, even without further explanation. “Why bother? He really likes that girl.”
Perhaps Johnny had once believed that Ulric’s claim of having feelings for someone else was merely an excuse to avoid marriage. However, after witnessing Ulric’s efforts, he knew that Ulric wasn’t making excuses-he was serious.
“Don’t you think he likes Rosalind because she resembles me?” Sirena asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Johnny blinked, recalling Rosalind’s face. There was indeed a resemblance.
“But he doesn’t need a substitute,” Johnny replied.
Sirena had always been by Ulric’s side, there was no need for any replacement.
“Because he wants to break free from his family’s expectations.”
Johnny remained silent, finding this reason somewhat far-fetched.
Moreover, Ulric’s relationship with his parents was remarkably good for a wealthy family, and his personality didn’t seem like the type to casually place someone in his heart.
“Just call him and tell him it’s serious. Can you do that? I want to see him.”
