Callie felt a sense of relief.
As usual, the annual meeting of the Oconnor Group was handed over to Cora. She managed everything meticulously, and no one within the organization had any objections.
The weather was extremely cold. Callie, holding a stack of documents, walked into the department from outside, her hands slightly red from the chill. Jett, who was getting water nearby, quickly approached her. “Let me help you, Callie.”
Having spent so much time together, no one called her Miss Marsh anymore; it was always just Callie. Callie didn’t refuse and smiled, saying, “Sure.”
Litzy came over, pointing at Jett’s retreating figure with a meaningful look. “That young man has potential and is willing to work hard. He’s a good prospect.”
Callie pretended not to understand. “Yes, I plan to bring him on the next project. He’s a great newcomer.”
Litzy clicked her tongue in admiration. “Don’t tell me you don’t get it. Nowadays, it’s trendy for older women to date younger men. I think he’s interested in you.”
Callie rolled her eyes in exasperation. “Don’t tease me. I’m married. There’s no such thing as dating a younger man for me.”
“Come on, you always say you’re married, but I’ve never seen him once all this time. He never picks you up or drops you off. I even suspect you’re lying to me about him being disabled. Maybe he doesn’t even exist.”
Litzy described her suspicions indignantly, making Callie feel guilty. “I’m not lying… I really am married. As for the disability…”
She regretted making up the story about Nelson being disabled.
“Actually, you’ve met him.” Callie smiled slyly.
“Don’t talk nonsense. When have I ever met him? I don’t remember.”
“You’ve met him.” Callie walked into her office with a smile, leaving Litzy puzzled.
Despite the cold weather, Oconnor Group maintained a constant temperature around the clock, and she quickly warmed up. Sitting at her desk idly, her phone suddenly popped up with a news alert stating that Alayah had been reported for tax evasion.
Callie was stunned and opened her social media app to see that Safe Ylosea had posted an official blue notice naming Alayah for tax evasion.
It was already trending at number one, with netizens discussing it in shock.
-Oh my God, if I remember correctly, she just got popular.
-Tsk, I thought she could stay moderately famous since she had good resources.
-Last time, Oconnor Group chose to pay a penalty to terminate her contract. Turns out it was because of this.
Instantly, Alayah was listed as a disreputable artist. In recent years, laws had become stricter on celebrities; any misconduct would lead to a ban. Now that the notice was out, Alayah was completely finished.
Callie sighed as she held her phone. A while ago, Cora had told her that Nelson discovered Alayah’s illegal activities, which led to the contract termination. It turned out to be true, meaning he didn’t handle Alayah because of her.
She took a deep breath, relieved that she hadn’t been presumptuous.
Some people were saying that Alayah had been engaging in such behavior for a long time and that her studio had tried to manage the crisis but failed, leading to the eventual exposure.
So that’s how it was.
Callie leaned back in her chair, looking up at the snow outside the window. Somehow, she thought of Jaquan again. That snowy night, his smile was dazzling.
It was also he who repeatedly warned her not to trust Nelson too much.
Everything was coming true, but what could she do? Just thinking about that man made her feel warm inside.
It felt like having a sense of belonging.
Alayah had no scheduled activities today and wouldn’t have any in the future either.
She slept until noon and hadn’t woken up when her agent, after making dozens of unanswered calls, came directly to her house. Just before banging on the door, the phone finally connected with a very tired voice on the other end. “Why are you still coming? I’ve already been banned.”
