Monday. I woke up early to shower, get dressed, and lament my useless existence. I was disgusting. Cris started calling me to let me know he was waiting for me downstairs to go to school. I dragged my bag down the stairs. I opened the front door and there he was, with the car running waiting for me to get in. Seeing my face, he raised his eyebrow, curious. “You’ve got some hellish dark circles. He hasn’t called you, has he?”
“Nope,” I closed the door and rested my forehead on the window glass. I was dying of sleep.
He began to drive. “Maybe you should call him, you said you crossed the line.”
“He did too.”
“Yeah, but you’re the one dying in my car right now,” he pointed out the obvious.
I have a great friend.
“Thanks for pointing that out, I needed it.”
“Anytime, gorgeous,” he licked his lips and winked at me, playfully flirting. “Really, though, call him.”
“No way, he took it for granted that I would, even less so now,” I turned on the radio so he wouldn’t continue on the subject, but he didn’t stop. He’s persistent, the guy knows I won’t give in… at least, not for the moment.
“Damn, you guys are proud.”
This is the first time since I got in the car that I agree with him. “You have no idea.”
“This thing about opposites attracting… you guys are dead for each other and you’re just the same.”
I couldn’t assume that Donovan was dead for me, only that maybe I was for him? I mean, he drives me crazy in every way and I’m still trying to figure out if that’s good or bad.
“If you say so.”
“I mean, you’re supposed to be the good girl who calms the beast’s rage, but you’re both beasts.”
I straightened up ready to hit him, did he just call me a beast? Does he know what he’s getting into when I’m in a bad mood?
He gave me a warning look, Cris knew he had no problem throwing me out of the car if I started attacking him, so I swallowed my aggression for the moment and rested my forehead on the glass again.
“Wow, thanks again,” I muttered with some anger in my voice. It annoyed me that he was right.
“You know I love you,” Cris murmured, stroking my hair.
I didn’t answer and he kept talking. My head was about to explode. “So… were you guys naked?”
I rolled my eyes as I prepared to get out of the car when he finished parking in the parking lot. “Before you start asking me if he had a big one, I’ll just say, it was dark and I didn’t see his boxer shorts.”
“That’s the first thing you have to see!” he questioned in a whiny moan. Actually, I did see his boxer shorts, what the thin fabric covered was gigantic, but I wasn’t going to tell him that.
“Excuse me, I was more focused on not dying of a heart attack,” I assured him, getting out of the car. It wasn’t a lie, my heart was racing, it almost felt like a buzzing sound.
“Was it that intense?” He wanted to know, running after me for more details.
“You have no idea,” I boasted, and he narrowed his eyes in my direction.
“You owe me your life,” he pointed out, pushing my shoulder.
I frowned and opened my mouth in surprise. “Me? Why?”
“Do you see this?” he pointed to the beginning of a bruise that was part of his chin and jaw. “This is in your damn name.”
I shrugged. “I still don’t understand why you did that.”
“‘Cause she’s mine, asshole! Mine!'” he said trying to imitate Donovan’s voice, which didn’t come out well at all and, in fact, didn’t explain the reason for doing it.
“Oh, thank you for the understanding, Dear Cris, I got it all,” I followed sarcastically, and opened the door of the building for him.
“Basically, the sexy jerk said he loves you thanks to moi,” he declared immediately, running his hand through his hair, as if inside, he was congratulating himself.
“Wrong, believing that I’m his property is not the same as loving someone,” I reasoned, but for Cris, every damn word that came out of Donovan’s mouth was glorious and worthy of admiration.
Annoying.
“So what is it then?” he demanded to know, crossing his arms over his chest. If he kept looking at me while walking through the crowded hallways, he was going to bump into someone any moment.
“It’s being possessive, caveman, and stupid. I belong to myself,” I answered the obvious. But I won’t deny that I liked it when Donovan claimed me with such fervor.
“But you sure did get your panties wet when he said it,” he mentioned, raising his eyebrows in unison. I laughed and gave him a gentle blow on his hip.
“The one who got a hard-on was you,” I declared, knowing it’s the truth. I know how horny Cris can be and he outdoes me in all possible ways… most of the time.
“And damn did I take advantage of it that night,” he fanned his face with his hand.
“Cris!” I exclaimed, positioning myself next to my classroom and grinning like an idiot. This guy could improve my mood in two seconds if he wanted to.
“You started it,” he stuck out his tongue at me in a mocking gesture.
I did the same to him. “Anyway, I didn’t need him to say he loved me, I don’t care.”
He rolled his eyes and nodded. “Yeah, sure.”
What’s with everyone underestimating me?
“Wasn’t she your friend?” he asked, guiding me with his gaze to April, she was a few meters away from us and her eyes collided with mine, she immediately looked away and walked towards the men’s bathrooms.
“That’s what I thought… But she doesn’t talk to me anymore,” I answered, confused by April’s action. Didn’t she read that there’s a sign that says men on the door?
“She’s dating Travis,” Cris revealed to my surprise. I opened my eyes wide in astonishment.
“Seriously?”
“Yep, they were spotted making out in the men’s bathroom,” he assured me, wrinkling his nose. “Super romantic place, you should go there with that bad boy who’s coming straight towards us.”
“What?”
I immediately turned around to confirm what Cris just told me. Donovan in all his glory is walking down the hallway, claiming some lascivious and accusing glances from boys and girls. Is he kidding me? He was practically out of school for two months, I’m sure he failed all his classes.
Cris waited until Donovan was a few meters away from us and opened his damn mouth. “Look who came to make up with his girl!”
And that’s how everyone turned to see us and appreciated how Donovan walked through the door of the course we shared without even looking at me.
I wanted to die.
I definitely wanted to die.
And I was going to drag Cris to hell with me.
