Nelson curled his lips in a somewhat sarcastic manner. “You can say that.”
She covered her mouth in surprise.
It was known worldwide that Jaquan admired Marilyn Ellison, the second daughter of the Ellison family. She had a prestigious background, was beautiful, and had a pleasant personality. In high society, she was a highly respected socialite.
The two families lived close to each other. When Jaquan was still a teenager, he openly expressed his love, but Marilyn pretended not to know and continued to be friends with him.
Nelson was not much older than them and could naturally sense certain things. For instance, when Marilyn finished her college entrance exams, she got into the same university he had attended. Later, she found ways to intern at Oconnor Group as his assistant, her admiration evident in her eyes.
But he could only pretend not to notice.
To achieve her goal, Marilyn devised a plan to lock them in the same hotel room overnight, expressing her affection throughout. She was clever and even threatened him: “Nelson, being with me is the best solution. I consider myself not bad; I have a family background and am more suitable for you than any other woman. Besides, none of them may love you as I do. If you don’t agree, by tomorrow morning, the door will be surrounded by reporters.”
Nelson sat on the sofa the entire time, looking at the sky outside. “Is it worth it to ruin your reputation?”
“It’s worth it!” The beautiful Marilyn shed tears. “For so many years, I’ve rejected countless suitors for you, including Jaquan. Others may not know why, but don’t you? Do you really not know?”
He raised an eyebrow, feeling only irritation. “You have the right to express your feelings, and I have the right to refuse. To me, you’re just like a sister. I can give you anything you want, except love.”
Marilyn nearly broke down, screaming hysterically, “Nelson! But I love you! I’ve loved you for many years.”
He no longer responded.
The next morning, the hotel entrance was indeed surrounded by reporters, their cameras flashing as they took numerous ambiguous photos. Eventually, all of them were bought and destroyed by Oconnor Group. Shortly after Nelson left, his assistant received news-
Marilyn had attempted suicide.
Cora was the first to learn of this. At that time, Nelson was resting in the back seat. He had been working tirelessly for days.
After some hesitation, Cora decided to tell him.
There was no response for a long time after she finished speaking. Cora glanced at the rearview mirror and saw Nelson slowly open his eyes, like a beast awakening.
The man rubbed his temples. “Then let’s go see her.”
Marilyn had cut her wrist veins; blood flowed, and she was on the brink of death, all just to see this man who didn’t care about her.
Fortunately, Nelson did go to see her.
He examined her bandaged wrist and lightly tapped it before looking into her eyes. “A girl should never degrade herself.”
Marilyn usually dressed up beautifully whenever she saw him. Today, lying on the hospital bed with pale lips and barely clinging to life, she unexpectedly caught his attention for a few more moments.
She tried to smile. “Nelson, if I didn’t degrade myself, I wouldn’t get to see you.”
Her eyes were red and swollen from crying. “Nelson, do you really not want me?”
Her soft and desperate tone made even Cora feel pity.
Nelson leaned back in his chair, legs crossed, his expression extremely gentle.
“Marilyn, you can state your conditions; I won’t refuse.”
These conditions were naturally materialistic. Marilyn’s tears soaked the pillow; she knew well that Nelson was always generous. The last girl who entangled with him reportedly asked for an unlimited black card, which he gave without batting an eye, just for peace.
