Callie had a dream where she safely arrived at Oconnor Group. Litzy was pulling her along, complaining about how slow she was. Then, she pushed open the meeting room door and apologized to the leaders. She turned on her computer and began explaining her design ideas, articulating them clearly and smoothly, just as she had imagined.
The blueprints were approved, and everyone applauded. She looked up with a smile and saw Nelson standing at the door, lazily curling his lips into a smile.
The dream ended abruptly. Callie opened her eyes wide and saw a white ceiling. A nurse was adjusting the IV drip speed beside her bed.
“You’re awake? I’ll go get the doctor.”
Callie was bewildered, looking around the room. She saw a jacket draped over a chair-it was Nelson’s.
“Nurse, what happened to me?” she asked in a shaky voice.
“You were in a car accident. Don’t move yet. Wait until the anesthesia wears off before getting up. I’ll go get the doctor.”
Soon, the nurse returned with the doctor, who performed various checks on her. The doctor looked serious. “Besides the fracture, there’s nothing major. Rest well for a few days and avoid moving around.”
Callie then noticed her arm was in a cast. She suddenly remembered being hit by a car, falling with her elbow hitting the ground first, which explained the fracture.
Yes, she fell at the entrance of Oconnor Group and missed the meeting…
Callie grabbed the nurse’s sleeve. “Nurse, who brought me here? Whose jacket is that?”
The nurse’s smile widened with a hint of shyness. “The police brought you here. Your husband signed the papers. He was just here. Look.” She took out a mirror and placed it in front of Callie. “He cleaned your face himself, saying you love looking beautiful and would be upset if your face got hurt.”
Her face had some abrasions, but apart from some redness, there was no dirt or gravel.
Callie couldn’t describe her feelings. It was hard to imagine someone like Nelson patiently cleaning her face, but perhaps he wasn’t the one who loved this face the most.
“Are you unhappy?” The nurse realized she might have said too much. The hospital director had instructed that this room was special and required extra care. Could it be that wealthy people’s marriages weren’t as perfect as they seemed?
Callie wasn’t in high spirits. “Where is he?”
“He seems to be on a call.”
The nurse left after tidying up once Callie’s IV drip finished. Callie sat on the bed in a daze for a long time, her expression blank and wooden.
“Mr. Oconnor.” Two bodyguards stood at the door.
Startled, Callie looked over and saw Nelson walking in unhurriedly, holding his phone. He asked, “Awake?”
For some reason, Callie started trembling as soon as she saw him. Her eyes reddened, and suppressed emotions began to spill out. “Nelson, I thought I was going to die. When that car hit me, I really thought I was going to die.”
The tremor in her voice quickened Nelson’s steps to her side. “It’s all over now.”
Fear washed over her again as Callie looked up at him with tearful eyes. “I haven’t made any enemies. Who wants me dead?”
He pressed his lips together, his tone heavy. “We’re still investigating. The driver is a small-time thug and has been detained. Someone must be behind this.”
Someone orchestrated it… It was deliberate. Callie couldn’t imagine being targeted for so long. She clutched Nelson’s sleeve. “I’ve felt like someone was following me these past few days. Could it be him? Can you check the surveillance footage?”
