Skye meant what she said.
Callie knocked twice on the door, but the office remained closed, so she gave up.
Litzy whispered, “Splendor Estate is quite far from here. I’ll go with you.”
“No need, you handle your own tasks. I can manage.”
Callie packed her bag with documents and sketchbooks and left Oconnor Group directly.
In Ylosea, the northern part of the city was where capitalists and wealthy individuals lived, while the southern part was for ordinary people.
The Marsh family also lived here, and Callie had spent thirteen years in this area.
Stepping onto familiar ground, she suddenly remembered that Yamilet hadn’t caused any trouble for a while. The last time, she had threatened to find Nelson. Could she have been scared off by her own threats?
Due to the high foot traffic, there were many houses here. Splendor Estate had a prime location, backed by elementary and middle schools, making it ideal for families with children. Once the development opened for sale, it was bound to sell out.
Nelson’s bid for this project was well worth the money.
The large abandoned building had been demolished, leaving a vast area of rubble. Many workers were busy under the sun. Callie walked around with her sketchbook, confirming the general design direction.
She sat under a tree, with sunlight filtering through and warming her face. Nearby, a grandmother played with her granddaughter in the park. The little girl pointed at Callie and repeated, “Sister, drawing, drawing.”
Callie’s heart melted. She smiled and took a candy from her bag. “Here, I have candy. Do you want some?”
The grandmother encouraged the little girl to go forward. “Quick, thank the sister.”
“Thank you, sister!”
The child’s sweet voice made Callie smile brightly.
“Young lady, what are you drawing? Is it a sketch? Why are they all lines?”
Callie replied, “Just drawing for fun, practicing.”
The grandmother seemed to understand somewhat. “My eldest granddaughter also learns to draw. She’s very good at it.”
“Oh? Is she in college now?”
“She just started this year. She’s had a tough life, coming from the countryside to study in the city. Her place is far away. Her parents debated for years whether to buy a house in the school district. They finally saved enough to buy one nearby, but it turned out to be an unfinished building. They lived there for three years.”
The grandmother sighed heavily. “Now this unfinished building is being demolished too.”
Callie glanced back at the numerous abandoned buildings, each hiding untold hardships.
Being able to buy a house in the school district should mean a happy and healthy family life, but…
“I wonder what they’ll build next. I hope they don’t repeat our tragedy.”
Callie felt conflicted. “They definitely won’t.”
Just as she finished speaking, she suddenly saw the little girl wobbling out onto the road. “Ma’ma, the girl!”
The grandmother quickly turned around and shouted anxiously, “Oh no! My baby!”
But the child had walked halfway across. This area had a blind spot in visibility, and a car was speeding towards her…
Callie immediately threw down her sketchbook and dashed forward, scooping the child into her arms and shielding her with her body.
A screech of brakes sounded behind her. The driver was sweating profusely and shouted out of the window, “Whose child is this? Watch her properly!”
The child wailed in Callie’s arms. Ignoring her scraped arm, Callie comforted her, “It’s okay! It’s okay now!”
She bowed apologetically to the driver while moving to the side of the street.
The car moved slowly and stopped again just as it was about to pass Callie.
Someone in the back seat rolled down the window.
