Chapter 36 It’s Callie

With Lorelai gone, the project still needed to move forward. Callie naturally took over the mess.
She modified the design greatly, as the previous one reminded her of Lorelai’s stealing.
The revisions passed with flying colors. The client was very pleased and promptly made the payment.
The entire design department buzzed with speculation about who would fill the vacant director position, Skye or Callie.
Both had recent achievements and had been with Oconnor Group long enough to be strong contenders.
When Litzy brought this up, Callie shrugged. “I don’t want to be the director. It’s too much work.”
“Don’t be silly. Aren’t you trying to earn money for your dad’s medical bills? Being the director isn’t just about the base salary.”
Medical bills… Reuben had Nelson’s people taking care of him.
With top-notch medical teams, money wasn’t an issue.
But what if one day Nelson no longer needed her and wanted a divorce?
She’d be left with nothing.
“You’re right. I should aim for it. Time to work hard and be the boss’s loyal employee!”
In the break room, Jaylin handed Cora a cup of coffee, noticing her gaze fixed on Callie, who was working diligently.
“Miss Weber, why are you so focused on Callie lately? She just exposed a plagiarist. Why the big fuss?”
Cora’s face darkened. Callie was pretty but not attractive enough. How could she possibly be married to Nelson? Cora tried to reassure herself that the rings were just a coincidence.
Callie wasn’t wearing the ring now, so there was no way to compare.
“Someone with that kind of resolve is destined for great things. Mr. Oconnor asked me to keep an eye on her,” Cora lied smoothly, sipping her coffee.
“Mr. Oconnor’s orders? Miss Weber, is there any truth to the rumors that she’s been trying to seduce Mr. Oconnor?” Jaylin asked, clearly intrigued.
Cora’s hand paused.
But Jaylin quickly dismissed her own idea. “But Mr. Oconnor wouldn’t be interested in her. She’s married. Who’d want a married woman?”
This remark struck a chord with Cora. She put down her coffee abruptly. “What did you say? Married?”
Jaylin was startled. “Yes, about a week ago. Everyone suddenly realized she was married. She’s been good at keeping it under wraps all these years.”
“When did she get married? Who is her husband?”
“She won’t say, so we don’t know…”
Cora took a deep breath, focusing on the key detail. “You said you found out she was married a week ago?”
“Yes.”
So, recently. And it was recently that Nelson started interacting with Callie…
How could there be such a coincidence?
Cora’s sense of crisis grew. She was now almost certain that Nelson’s wife was Callie!
Before the end of the workday, Callie was getting ready to leave right on time. She never worked overtime for free, a principle she lived by.
Just then, Jaylin passed by with some files and smiled. “Callie, the design department is having a get-together this weekend. Why don’t you bring your husband? We’ve never met him.”
Who said colleagues had to meet her husband?
Before Callie could respond, someone else chimed in, “Yeah, we never see him pick you up from work. Not very thoughtful, is he?”
“Maybe he doesn’t even exist.”
Callie rolled her eyes, thinking they’d be surprised to know they’d met her husband already but wouldn’t recognize him if he stood right in front of them.
Callie thought for a moment and then smiled. “Well, my husband has some health issues, so it’s not convenient for him to come out.”
