“What are you doing here?” Cade asked stepping back so that there could be space between them since it was clear that she had no respect for personal space.
“Ohhh, your brother’s girlfriend called me up and invited me to your brother’s party and I was so excited to hear from her because I knew that there was the possibility that I would get to see you here” Harper replied closing the gap that Cade had made.
“Go on then and enjoy the party” Cade said turning to leave.
“Is that all you are going to say?” she asked going to stand in his way.
Ophelia rolled her eyes in annoyance. She could not believe the nerve of this girl, how dare she try to cling to her husband right in front of her.
“Hello,” Ophelia said trying to catch her attention.
“Oh, hello,” she said with a giggle before adding in an exaggerated high-pitched voice. “I am so sorry, I was just too far excited to see him that was why I did not say my hello before”
‘Of course, you are far too excited to see my husband that you are acting so clingy to him’ Ophelia said to herself. She was tempted to roll her eyes at the ridiculousness of the woman standing in front of her. Could she not try to not show how shameless he was?
“It is no problem, I could understand that,” Ophelia said before pointing to her. “But you are blocking our path”
“Oh, am I?” she asked as if it was not obvious enough. When Cade had turned to escape her she had turned to stand in his path to stop him from going.
“Yes, you are” Ophelia replied following her tone.
“Sorry about that” she said stepping to the side so the pathway was free for them.
“I guess we will see you later,” Ophelia said. This time she was holding on so tightly to Cade’s hands even though her tiny hand could not go around his.
“But wait, if you don’t mind can I steal Cade away for a second?”
“What?”
“I mean you have been with him all this time and it’s been a minute since we have been with each other, I would just like to catch up that is all” Harper said.
Ophelia could not believe the audacity of this girl in front of her. Imagine a woman challenging you so much she was even bold enough to ask you to lend her your husband.
“I do mind and as you can see we are busy”
“Busy doing what? You don’t look that busy to me” Harper added. She could not believe that Ophelia had turned her down with how sweet she had tried to be.
“We are busy, or do we have to report what we want to do as a couple to you?” Ophelia asked glancing at Cade hoping that he would say something about this woman. She was annoying and Cade needed to pick a side as soon as possible. The only way Ophelia would win against this woman was if he picked her and she needed him to do it now.
“That is not what I am saying, I mean it’s a party are you going to stick together all night?”
“Then what? Should I leave him so he can go have a chat with his ex-girlfriend?” she asked propping her empty hand on her waist.
“Why do you need to bring up old relationships?” Harper asked with a smirk. She loved the threatened look on Ophelia’s face, If she was threatened by her existence then the better for her anyway.
“Why are you being annoying and sticking to him like a thrown-out gum?” Ophelia asked. Her choice was words was deliberate. This had to be her way of ticking her off. She knew shameless girls like these do not back down unless they are pushed down.
“What?”
“I do not have to take excuses from you, but just because I was raised to be polite I would do it. So if you would excuse us, we have to be on our way” Ophelia said pulling Cade with her until she was out of her sight. She turned around over Cade’s shoulders to see the annoyed look on her face and it brought a sense of satisfaction to her.
“And yeah, if you think you would have a moment alone with my husband then dream on,” she said with emphasis on the words my husband. This was clearly a battle of words and she wanted her to clearly know that she had lost and there was no way she was going to let her win. She was so tempted to stick out her tongue at her but she managed to turn around and begin walking before her intrusive thoughts win.
When they were in a quiet spot Ophelia detached her hands from Cade’s hands and stood opposite him with a questioning look on her face.
“What?” Cade asked not liking the expression on her face.
“What?” she scoffed corsiing her hand on her chest and leaning in. “I should be asking you that and not the other way around” she added with a scowl on her face.
“What do you mean?” Cad asked. He was not sure what she was trying to ask him. Replaying the things that had happened tonight he could not tell if he had done anything that might offend her.
“Were you happy that two women were pulling out their hair because of you?” she asked and he frowned.
“What do you mean?” now he did not like where the conversation was going but one thing he had to do was make sure that he was sure of what she meant so that he did not just jump to conclusions with the wrong idea.
“When Harper was coming at me, why did you not say anything to defend me? ” she asked leaning in further that Cade thought it was impossible to close the gap between them any further.
“To defend you? It did not look like you needed my help”
“And that is the problem, it is not about me needing your help, it should have come naturally for you to defend me” she explained. “not saying anything when she asked you to leave me and go with her was what made her think she had the right to”
“Cade, Ophelia?” Frances’s voice came from a distance. They turned to see her dressed in a shiny dress that should be worn to an award night and not a party happening at home. Her makeup was as excessive as the dress so maybe it complimented each other very well too.
“You made it, when I did not see you around, I thought you did not come but I am glad to see you here.”
“We were just looking for you,” Ophelau said leaning into Cade lovingly. Cade wondered if she was the same woman who had just tried to bite off his head for reasons he was not yet sure of.
“Oh, you were? I am glad then. We would have to cut the cake in the next twenty minutes so why don’t you just come with me” Frances.
“Did we come late? It is time for cake already?” Ophelia asked.
“We just had to rush everything because Grandpa would need to go to bed soon and we would love him to be a part of the whole thing without missing anything out”
“That is so thoughtful of you” Ophelia complimented. She knew that the tale that Frances had just spewed was just to tell her that she had been a good planner and she needed to be acknowledged.
“Coem on”
“Just give us a few seconds, we will be there”
“Okay then, see you soon,” Frances said before walking away.
“We would talk about this later, so let us just go”
