“Hello” the voice on the phone was peepy like a little child who was excited about something. Ophelia drew the phone from her ears as she groaned annoyed. She was still sleeping. Who calls this early? The voice was unfamiliar to her but she knew that no one would have her private line except she gave it to them. She did not know any woman who was that happy so early in the morning.
She struggled to get into a sitting position knowing that her morning voice sounded horrible. “Hello,” she let out. Hearing herself made her realize how much of a growing teenage boy she sounded like in the morning.
“Oops Cade?” the voice came out and she knew that the person could tell that she was the one but was trying to get on her nerves while maintaining the appearance of being a nice person. The only person she had met in recent times who was that kind of person was Frances Gates and she immediately knew that this was the kind of stunt that she would pull.
‘Bring it on B**ch’ Ophelia thought to herself as she cleared her throat and forced her eyes open. The need to show her what she was made of quickly drove out this sleep from her eyes. “Hello” she said sounding a bit better now.
“Ohh Ophelia?” Frances said and she nodded giving herself a fake smile. “For a moment I thought it was my brother-in-law on the phone”
Ophelia rolled her eyes. Why was she already referring to him as brother-in-law when they had not even established that they were dating? She knew that this was this girl’s kind of technique, pissing off those around you while maintaining a smile and acting poised and polished also with an annoying smile that Ophelia was sure was plastered across her face as she spoke to her now.
“Yeah, just my morning voice, your call woke me” Ophelia made sure to sound each word with aggression so that she knew she was being annoying and somehow her tactic was working.
“Oh, I am sorry, silly me. I tend to forget that some people have late mornings” she said letting out a quick but scripted laugh. “You know I am a morning person, I have to wake up right early to get out for some workout at the gym and then I have to do one or two things before the day starts”
“Good for you,” Ophelia said dryly. She was trying to get to her? Why then should she give her the pleasure of being happy by doing what she wanted?
“Yeah,” Frances said dryly as she discovered that her bullying had not worked.
“Why are you calling me so early?” Ophelia asked not trying to stall or stay on the call any longer.
“I am calling to know when I can come around to give you an invite for the party” she said now going back to her peppy one from earlier.
“I don’t know, I am quite busy today” Ophelua lied but only because she did not want to have to sit even for ten minutes with this girl who was going to torment her with fakeness.
“Oh, how do I then get the invitations across to you”
“You can send it by a courier service?” Ophelia knew that she knew the answers to the questions because they seemed too obvious for her not to know.
“Oh but I wanted to deliver it by myself” she said with a whiny tone.
“I don’t understand it,” Ophelia said.
“What don’t you understand?” Frances asked wondering where she was going with it.
“I mean you basically said it yesterday, we are family, why do you need to give invitation cards to family, just tell us the time, date and venue and we will be there faster than lighting,” Ophelia said.
“Oh,” Frances was not going because she wanted to give her an invitation. This was just her way of sizing Ophelia up. She pretty much knew the other ladies in the wealthy community because they all grew up together. Ophelia even though she was the richest was often the outcast among them, not because they made it so but because she always made it that.
Then after a while, they could not even ever meet at events because she was out of the country and never came home on holidays. Ir was ass though she sent herself into exile. Frances wanted a bit more conversation with her before knowing if it was a risk worth taking to stand with Cael. Hiding under the guise of delivering the invitation card was all she had. Now that Ophelia had pointed it out it would be hard for her to come up with a new plan.
“And if you need help to put up a few more decorations and even help with putting out the wine glasses and champagne flutes. I would be there to help out too”
“Oh, that is so kind of you” Frances had to finish the conversation she had started the way she started it she would risk exposing herself without even doing anything. “But that would be so silly of me”
“Why would it be?” she asked confused.
“I don’t know, I just assumed that it might be too much work for you” Frances said.
“Of course not, just let me know whenever you need help and I will come over because that is what families do”
“Of course”
“Okay then I would be expecting a message containing the date, time and venue for this party and I would be there like it is mine because that is how you show up for family”
“And Cade?” Ophelia rolled her eyes. ‘Why is she asking for Cade?’
“We would be there, he would have to cancel everything just to come for the birthday”
“That is just lovely. I will let you know it is tomorrow and we start at eight pm. So see you then”
“Of course”
“Buh bye”
