Martins didn’t stop staring at Serena until Serena moved her gaze towards his direction and caught him staring.
“Martins, are you okay?” Serena asked, standing up from the kitchen stool.
“Uh… yes, I’m fine,” he murmured, moving his gaze elsewhere.
“Um, I’m sorry about your dad. I don’t think you should overthink. You might fall sick while worrying too much,” Serena cooed, standing in front of him.
Martins let out a one-sided smile. “Yes, ma’am. I’ll only listen to you from now on,” he beamed.
Serena blushed, shifting her gaze away from him. “Let’s leave, but before that, do you want something? Anything?” Martins inquired.
“No, I don’t anything. Let’s go,” Serena said, smiling.
“Okay, but the next time we come here. I’m cooking something for you. I’ll cook myself. Got that?”
Serena chuckled.
“Yes, sir,” she bobbed her head once. They came out from the kitchen and to the sitting room.
Serena’s eyes settled on a maid who was by the corner arranging the flowers. Martins led her out, and they both entered the car and drove back to the castle.
Throughout the ride, they only talked about random things, but deep down in Serena’s heart, she pitted him. They both came down from the vehicle to find Beta Adam standing in front of the castle’s main entrance.
Serena’s heart skipped a beat when her eyes locked with that of Beta Adam. Oh fuck. He is around, Serena thought as she slowly approached the castle doors.
“Where are you coming from this late?” Beta Adam’s voice stopped her right in her tracks when she was about to enter the castle silently.
Serena flinched. She slowly turned and looked up at him. “I-” Serena stuttered, pointing to the gate.
“You should go see the king then. Explain where you went to- to him. I’m sure he will understand,” Beta Adam groaned, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips.
Hearing the king’s name brought fear into Serena’s heart. Is he looking for me? It was at the tip of her tongue to ask, but she held herself.
“Okay,” she murmured and was about to proceed when Martin’s voice came.
“I’m the one to blame. It would help if you weren’t harsh on her. I took her out of the castle. I tricked and took her out,” Martins explained.
Serena shifted her attention to Martins. “No, no. Stop it, ” she signaled him to back off, but Martins wasn’t paying attention.
“What? I’m also a Beta, you know,” Martins stared at Beta Adam straight in the eyes.
Beta Adam scoffed.
“So? What if you are a Beta? You are not the king’s Beta, and you certainly aren’t as strong as I am, so back off before I get angered by your actions.” Beta Adam warned.
“Oh really? Maybe you should move me out of the way then. She did nothing wrong,” Martins huffed. “I don’t see the reason why she is to meet with the king when she is clearly innocent,” he continued.
Beta Adam scoffed again. He turned his attention to Serena who was still signalling Martins to stop talking back.
“You know her brother and a few other guys here are also Beta’s, but they dare not disrespect me. They know their place. I think you need to be put in your place.” Beta Adam moved closer to Martins and threatened.
Serena quickly rushed towards Martins. She pulled him by the arm and kept pulling him away until they were inside the mini-mansion.
“What do you think you are doing going up against the king’s Beta? You are no match for him. That is why he is the king’s Beta. He is stronger, faster, and a lot more. Going up against him is something you do only when you have a death wish,” Serena scolded.
“I don’t care,” Martins rolled his eyes reluctantly. Then he turned and walked away.
Serena composed herself the moment she noticed the servant’s gaze on her.
She went out and went straight to the castle. She entered the court and went to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee for King Zed. I hope he is not too angry, Serena hoped as she mixed the coffee with the required ingredients.
She covered the coffee after making it and placed it on a tray before carrying it straight to the king’s chambers. She has finally mastered the route to his bed chambers and to his office.
The guards safeguarding his door gave her a weird look, but she returned it with a smile of her own.
“What are you doing here?” One asked.
“I’m here to serve the king his coffee. Beta Adam ordered me to his chambers,” Serena explained.
The two guards exchanged looks. “The king is resting. Are you sure Beta Adam asked you to do this?” One asked to be sure.
Serena faked a cough. “Can’t I jus-”
“Let her in,” the king’s loud voice interrupted Serena’s words.
Serena straightened up upon his words. She held onto the coffee tray and watched as the guards opened the door. Serena walked into the room, which was looking dimly lit. Her eyes caught King Zed lying on the bed, with his eyes fixed on the ceiling.
“Good evening, master,” Serena bowed in greetings.
“What did you do wrong? Why did Adam ask you to see me?” King Zed asked without sparing her a glance.
The question confused Serena a little. I thought you called. I thought you asked for me. I thought he asked me to see you because you ordered it. Serena thought to herself.
“What did you do wrong then?” King Zed asked again.
“I… I went out with….” Serena paused, not willing to expose Martins. “I went out and returned late to the castle,” Serena replied.
“Where did you go to?” His next question made Serena uncomfortable.
What am I going to tell him? What should I tell him? Serena wondered.
She doesn’t know how to tell him that she went to a restaurant or that she went to the house of the man who supposedly wants to kill him.
“I… I went to a restaurant, master,” Serena admitted.
King Zed turned in her direction after she responded. “And who did you inform before leaving?” King Zed asked, and the question made Serena more uncomfortable. “Or were you planning on running away from me again?” King Zed asked.
“No! Of course not. I will never do that-”
“It’s not as if you haven’t tried and failed,” King Zed cut her in and groaned.
Serena shut her mouth. She just kept staring at the floor, waiting for him to speak, but he never did. When she got tired of waiting, she moved her feet, went to the table beside his bed, and placed the tray she was carrying there.
“What is that?” King Zed questioned.
“Coffee, master,” Serena answered. She turned and made to leave but stopped when King Zed spoke up.
“Did I ask for this?” He asked, looking unsure himself.
“N… no, you’re… Highness, you didn’t.” Serena stuttered.
“Then why did you bring me a cup of coffee? Planning to poison me?” King Zed asked in a taunting way. Serena gasped.
“I will never do that, master. I’ve never even killed an insect before,” she gasped, mumbling the last part.
“But I didn’t ask for this, and you brought it.” A minute passed, “Oh, I see what you are trying to do,” King Zed smirked.
“I’ll just take the coffee back.” But King Zed stopped her from taking the coffee away.
“I know you put in a lot of effort making that coffee. I’ll take it,” King Zed’s tone suddenly changed.
His words came out softly.
It left Serena puzzled for seconds. How does he manage to change his mood every five minutes? Serena wondered as she made for the door again.
And, is he really trying to kill Martin’s father? Is he that bad? Or did Martin’s parents do something very bad? Serena kept thinking, forgetting that the king could also hear her thoughts. She stepped out of his room and was about to leave when King Zed called her back.
“Who is Martins’s father?” King Zed asked, now sitting up from the bed.
He doesn’t usually listen to people’s thoughts or read their minds because he finds everything they think disgusting, but Damon, his wolf, started liking Serena. He couldn’t help but listen to most things that went on in her head.
Although he doesn’t do this every time, he does it when he finds it necessary.
Right now he listened to her thought because of how she ignored his commands and tried to leave.
“Your Highness!” Serena gasped yet again. Her eyes widened.
She wanted to slap herself hard on the cheek but couldn’t. How could I forget that the king hears people’s thoughts? It kept ringing inside her head as she stood before King Zed again.
“Answer my question,” King Zed groaned, looking more serious now.
“Um.. master, he-”
“Where did you go to today?” King Zed cut her off and asked.
“To the restaurant, master. To the restaurant,” Serena answered.
“Where did you go after the restaurant, and why did you head there in the first place?” King Zed questioned.
“I… I…” Serena’s lips trembled as she thought of something clever to say.
She doesn’t intend to throw Martins under the bus in any way, but it seems like removing Martins will only make things worse. The king will read through her lies and will continue questioning her until he learns the whole truth.
“We made a deal, you know.” King Zed reminded.
“You are breaking it. You are disobeying and irritating me at the same time. I asked you a simple question, but you can’t answer it. You are seeking lies to tell me, aren’t you?” King Zed grunted.
“You know I can simply look into your head and see everything you’ve done today. I’ll see what I want to see, but I’m not doing that right now because I was hoping you could tell me the truth yourself. Who is Martins’s father?
“First of all, who is Martins?” King Zed questioned.
Serena sighed. She doesn’t know what to do anymore. I should probably tell him to avoid getting punished or getting Martins into another trouble because of me.
“Martins is the new servant here. He is the one that took over my brother’s duty,” Serena answered. King Zed didn’t say anything, and kept looking at her, waiting for her to go on.
“He is the guy who took me out to the restaurant. He happened to hear about my brother by chance. H-he initially wanted to take me to see my brother but later didn’t because we went to see his sick and dying father.” Serena answered.
King Zed didn’t say another word after her explanation. He continued staring at her, probably trying to see if she was lying to him or not. He watched her facial expression also. Listened to her heartbeat and heard it skip trice.
He realized Serena was lying to him but he didn’t utter another word. He simply waved his hand at her, ordering her to leave. She bowed slightly before leaving his bed chambers.

Martins stayed up at the field side, where no soul could hear a single word he discussed with his dad.
“How are things going?” His father asked after he picked up his son’s call.
“Smoothly, just as we expected. Serena still doesn’t suspect anything. She is in flow, and she likes me more now. She wants to protect me, I can see it in her.” Martins replied, grinning.
“Good. Make sure you stay out of Zed’s reach. He must not see you until we accomplish the plan. That bastard is brilliant and can sense out an enemy fast. You heard what happened to his servant whom he killed minutes after he found out the servant was plotting against him. I don’t need to tell you to remain hidden. Mind everything you do there, it won’t take long before we reach our goal. Everything is already in place.” Martin’s father instructed.
“Yes, Dad. I understand. I won’t ruin the plans,” Martins promised.
“Good. Call me tomorrow and give me an update about security guards.”
“I will. Goodnight.” Martins replied before disconnecting the call.
