Over my dead body

NALEDI’S POV
All eyes diverted to me as soon as the words left my mouth.
“What?” The fucker dared to look confused.
I turned to Ezra. “Lock him up. No food or water until seven days.”
My gaze was daring as I waited for Ezra to carry out my command. I was in charge, and if they thought I was going to take shit lying down then they had other things coming.
“Do I need to repeat myself?” I asked when there was no movement from the said people.
Ezra nodded and immediately, the joker was arrested by his peers.
“What? Leave me alone! I did nothing wrong!” He protested and was dragged out by his peers, leaving me with Ezra and the girls who seemed even more afraid of me than they should be.
“Take them back, make sure they are well fed for at least seven days. The last thing I need is someone fainting on the way and disrupting whatever mission mapped out for them.” I order without looking at Ezra.
Who knows? I might come up with a plan on how to set them free before the time elapses. And if it isn’t in their destiny to be set free before that time, at least they stand a chance of surviving the wind.
Ezra remained rooted in his spot. “The Alpha would not appreciate having his plans ruined.”
“I will handle the Alpha.”
He seemed like he had something else to say but I remained rooted to the spot. There was no way I was letting those children go in such a state. Or in any state. Hell will freeze first.
Ezra turned around, meeting the eyes of the guards. “Do as the Luna has ordered.”
“Yes sir.” They chorused and led the girls out of sight. Gently might I add.
I felt like a job well done and refused to think of the fact that the Alpha might have my head for making his people defy him. He should have known that’s what he gets when he placed me in charge.
Besides, I take risks for a living. Sue me.
A piercing scream from the deeper parts of the prison jolted me from my thoughts. Then a gunshot. The entire women shrank in their cells, looking scared out of their wits.
“What the fuck is that?” I snarled and two more shots graced the air with a loud grunt of the word – bitch!
Ezra took position in front of me, looking towards where the sound came from. I wasn’t some damsel in distress. If something was going on in this prison I sure as hell wanted to know.
I left Ezra’s cover and headed for the deeper parts of the cells. Ezra was hot on my trail, muttering something along the lines of how dangerous it was for me to be here but when have I ever listened?
Soon enough, I was looking at the perpetrator of the violence. A guard who appeared to be shot in the leg, lying on the floor and holding a gun to a free Korah who was out of her cells and dripping blood from her ribcage.
My first instinct was to help get the bullet out of her but I was stopped by Ezra’s timely intervention. “Shit! She doesn’t have her band on her!” His voice was panicked as he forced me behind him.
I couldn’t unsee the bullet wound that poured out blood. It had been a minute and she wasn’t healing. Just what in the world did they lace that bullet with to hinder her from supernatural healing?
“Go back into the cell, elemental.” His voice was threatening and his eyes glowed a terrific shade of white.
A small ball of fire grew in Korah’s hand and she wore a frightening smile on her face. “You shouldn’t have locked me up, traveller.”
“You are weak. I could end you with a flick of my fingers.” He rounded her with a predator look in his eyes. “Be a good girl and get back where you belong.”
Korah looked deranged, gone was the sweet girl I knew from back then. What changed? All that was left was a woman scorned and ready to burn the entire place into crisp. If given the opportunity of course.
“Over my dead body.” She seethed, and without warning, threw a fireball at him.
Ezra easily handled the attack. It was either she was way too weak to perform or he was a lot more stronger than she ever was. Something told me it was the latter and I find myself wishing she hadn’t taken such risk.
I didn’t know how far Ezra was willing to take this, which directly put Korah in danger. I had to do something before things got out of hand. I watched Ezra raise his hand and a black form appeared in his hands, ready to strike.
Without thought, I put myself between them and tackled Korah to the ground. She groaned, then struggled against me. “Don’t move,” I said in the lowest possible tone.
It was either she didn’t hear me or she just chose to ignore me. I was leaning on the latter. Korah struggled against me, desperate to get on her feet. By now I could hear the feet of the others that joined us.
If I let her go, it was a direct bus to hell. I couldn’t risk that.
“Bring the darned band!” I roared when they stood still, holding their guns and clearly waiting for me to step away before they made their shot. Before they killed her.
No one moved until I smelt burning flesh. It took a moment for me to realize it was mine. Korah was going batshit crazy on me. Boy did it hurt as fuck.
Thankfully they got the memo from the desperate look on my face. I remained on the floor, holding Korah to the ground and refusing to let go until she was taken care of in a way that didn’t end her life.
When the band snapped in place, I let go and rolled on my side. Sure enough, there was a gash on the right side of my rib. Korah got me pretty good. I watched as she was dragged back into her cell and given a good round of beating while Ezra fussed over my injury.
“Just give me some pain relievers. I’ll be fine. No one needs to hear about this.” Those were my last words before I felt the darkness take over me.
