The Alpha’s what?

NALEDI’S POV
I barely slept through the night.
And this time, it wasn’t because of the night terrors I suffered from a young age.
This time, it was out of excitement. For the first time since I got here, I couldn’t wait to get up and out. Today was my first day.
You guessed it. I was starting on my 500k dolls per month job. Why the fuck wouldn’t I be excited? I had woken up early, done my hair, my nails and everything I needed to do.
All that remained was for Matteo to show up and brief me on the darned job.
It’s been a while since I held a gun, and I honestly missed the thrill of having to do something with myself – The rush of smuggling things, delivering goods and the rest of those god-awful things.
You can’t blame me for missing them. I grew up around things like that, so much that it was a part of me. Working for dangerous people was an extension of me.
I just had to make sure I didn’t get killed in the process.
Three knocks came from the door and I was convinced it was Beta Matteo. From my little encounters with him, I realised he was a man of few words and strict patterns.
For example. He only knocked three times. And whether or not I answered was inconsequential to him. The last time we met, he nearly darned walked in on me clad in my underwear.
After a few stern and colourful words were spoken by yours truly, he gave a clear-cut explanation of how it was within his job description to walk in after three knocks to verify I was alright.
As much as I could see the reason behind it, I refused to give him the time of the day and instead cussed him the fuck out. That was the only way I could convey my thanks, alright?
Good thing he wasn’t affected by my cusses. Or anything else if you ask me. He felt like a walking wall. Yeah, I said it. Sue me.
“The door’s open,” I said and he walked into the room.
“My lady.” He greeted me with a bow.
What was with everyone addressing me in that manner?
“Beta Matteo.” A smile graced my lips. “I’ve been waiting all night.” I only realised the double meaning of my words when it was out. “I mean, I’m ready to begin my job,” I finessed my way through the blunder. “Cae- I mean, the Alpha said you would brief me on what I had to do?”
He nodded. “Yes, My lady.” His eyes roamed my form. “Is there an occasion I am unaware of?”
My eyes narrowed in confusion. “What do you mean?”
He gestured at my apparel. “It seems like you are dressed…”
I wore a black suit which consisted of a mini skirt, dress shirt and tie. Yeah, I was going for the corporate seductress vibe in this one. If there was one thing I knew about working in the mafia, it was the fact you had to make a statement with everything.
Otherwise, they would not take you seriously, especially as a woman.
“Do you have a problem with my clothes?” I couldn’t hide the offence in my tone.
No one had the right to police my dress. I’d made that clear a thousand times.
“Not really.” His tone was flat. “It just seems a bit too serious for the job you have been assigned.”
I cut him off. “First of all, there’s no such thing as being too serious. I take my job seriously and I’m sorry if it doesn’t resonate with you.”
“Far from that. I thought it was too dressy for a job as the Alpha’s maid.”
I couldn’t believe my ears. My lips trembled as I thought of the best way to convey my shock into words.
“The Alpha’s w-what?”
“Maid.” Matteo was as straight as they come. No beating about the bush and head-hitting. “Your job is to be the Alpha’s personal maid and cater to his every need.” He went through my form once again. “Unless you feel comfortable in that assemble, we can begin to introduce you to what you ought to do.”
“Where is Caellum?” I asked, holding back the anger that brimmed within me.
Matteo’s jaws tightened. No doubt, hating my disrespectful address of the Alpha. I was far from concerned.
“Alpha Caellum.” He corrected and I waited impatiently for answers. “I’m afraid the Alpha is not in the country.”
My jaws dropped open. “Who are you kidding? I fucking saw him last night!”
“He took the jet out this morning. Pressing matters that required his attention.”
Pressing matters? Pressing matters that required his attention? I huffed. This man was unbelievable.
“Get him on the line. This is an emergency.” My veins bulged in my forehead and I rocked a migraine headache.
“I’m sorry that would not be possible.” Matteo’s tone left no room for further deliberations. “We need to begin our day. I have but a few minutes to put you through. Shall we?”
I followed Matteo out of the room with a grim look on my face. As we passed by the people, I felt their stares at me. And no, it wasn’t because I was a new face.
It was because I looked weird dressed up like this.
I had an opportunity to change into something more casual but refused to let the situation get the best of me. There was no way in hell I was becoming Caellum’s slave or whatever fancy tag it was they had for the job.
I was only fulfilling obligation by following Matteo in this ridiculous talk of walking me through the job. The real conversation would happen when I set my eyes on Caellum. Or should I say, Alpha Caellum?
“Your job is easy,” Matteo said as he led us into the Alpha’s chambers.
How did I know? Because his scent was everywhere. It was hard not to pick up on it, being his mate and whatnot.
“You are to cook for the Alpha, clean his room, and ensure he is satisfied at all times.” Matteo rambled, and I shot daggers at him.
Satisfied at all times? We’ll see about that.
