Chapter 40

Book:Rose & Thorn: The Perfect Duo Published:2024-8-29

Victor looks at Damian, who keeps shooting over and over. He hasn’t stopped since they arrived at the training section. It’s just like he has something in his mind, and this activity helps him to be distracted.
More like he lash out his anger right now.
“Did you do something again, Mat?”
“What? What did I do wrong? Why do you ask me that??” Matthew frowns.
“Because Damian looks like he could destroy every target for one day,” he nods towards Damian.
Matthew turned his head, and his friend was right. He shakes his head slightly, not even surprised by Damian’s mood swings. Two things might be the cause. It might be because Melody did something to annoy him or his work did.
He takes a puff of his cigar and blows it out, “Is this the first time you’ve met Damian, Vic?”
“I’m just asking. This time his mood seems different,” Victor shrugs his shoulder.
Suddenly, Damian slams his gun on the counter. He let out heavy breaths and pushed his hair backwards. He turns around and mumbles something under his breath.
“What’s wrong, dude?” Matthew blows out a smoke.
“This is frustrating…” he sits on the couch and leans on it. His eyes closed as if trying to calm himself down.
“Are you okay? Is there something we can do?” Matthew questioned again.
“What you can do? Nothing. I don’t know what to do,” Damian grumbles. He rubbed his face, “I already got what I want and now… I don’t need her. But… I can’t let her go,”
Victor furrows his eyebrows, “What do you mean?”
“My father told me he wanted to hand over the clan to me sooner. He said… he saw the change in me and decided that he should retire early,” Damian explains.
“Isn’t that great?” Matthew arches his eyebrows.
“It is, but…” he put his face in his hands.
Victor stares at him for a moment before speaking, “What is stopping you from letting her go? Your deal will automatically be off when you get the clan, won’t it?”
“I don’t know what stopping me… I just… j-just… can’t,” Damian mumbles. He sounds so complicated and weak.
“Did Melody know about this?” Matthew questioned.
“No… she didn’t,”
There’s silence between them. This is their first time to see Damian in so much distress. As much as they know, he is calm and easy to make a decision. But seeing him in this state, they know how much Melody affects him.
It just… he wasn’t aware of it yet.
“Do you want to hear our opinion?” Matthew suggest.
“What?” he looks at him.
Matthew sighs, “I suggest you… to cancel off the deal and keep her.”
Damian furrows his eyebrows. Before he could ask why, his friend had already beaten him to it.
“Why? Because… since you bring Melody into your life, we see… something we didn’t expect to see.” Matthew speaks.
“You more like to… soft side?”
His finger twitched as he heard that. Damian looks at him with a frown and is about to protest what he said. Before he did, Victor chimes in.
“Don’t even think of snaps at Matthew. I hate to say this but what he said is true, Dam,” Victor sighs. “Whoever did the things that Melody did, I bet they wouldn’t see the sun anymore,”
“I’m not going soft on her, okay? You guys just misunderstand it,” Damian firmly says.
“See? You don’t even admit it. It’s not like it was something new to us since you never admit something. Not until it hits your nerve,” Matthew rolls his eyes.
Damian gets up, “I don’t care about that. Why are you suddenly bringing up that ‘soft’ topic?”
“To make you see why you shouldn’t continue this deal,” Victor says. “If you did this based on your ego, you will lose everything, Dam.”
Victor looks at him. Even though his expression is emotionless, and the way he says it is deadpan, there’s still a hint of pleading. He doesn’t want Damian to go back to his gloomy era.
Seeing his friend finally get someone to bring him out of the darkness, Victor couldn’t help but be happy.
“You know what? I don’t need your opinion. Both of you say nonsense stuff,” he grumbles.
Matthew was about to say something, but a guard came and whispered something to Damian. His expression changes to irritation. He sighs deeply and pinches the bridge of his nose.
“Something wrong?” Matthew question.
“Melody went out to buy ice cream with my guard without informing me,” he sighs.
“How did she manage to be out? Didn’t you strictly tell your guard not to listen to her?” Matthew frowns.
Damian grabs his stuff, “She threatened my guard, do you believe that?”
Matthew bursts into laughter. Victor smirks slightly. How can petite women threaten the intimidated guards who are being trained to face blood and horrible stuff?
“I got to go,” he walks off with the guards after him.
The door shut closed, leaving the two men. Matthew looks at Victor, who is wiping his gun.
“He still on his opinion, huh?”
“You know how Damian is. He wouldn’t realise it not until something happened that could hit his nerve,” Victor says.
__
Melody standing in front of the ice cream truck waiting for her order. She couldn’t sit still as she was craving for it.
“Mrs. Melody, can you hurry up? Mr. Angelo will be mad if he finds out you sneak out of the house,” the guard says in fear. He keeps looking around just in case there’s a threat coming.
Being Damian’s wife’s bodyguard is for a high-rank guard since it is too risky and has a high potential threat.
“Mrs, how about you stay in the car? I will pay for the ice cream for you,” the guard suggested.
“Sure. Don’t buy the wrong flavour. I want the right one,” she points at him.
The guard chuckles and nods. Melody smiles and walks off. She knows how much they fear of Damian. Well, who wouldn’t? That guy could kill anyone without a second thought.
In the scene, Damian shoots the guy named Ludwig right on his head. Melody felt a shiver run down her spine. Blood spilt on her that time.
As she is busy with her thoughts, she accidentally bumps into someone. Melody stumbles backwards and almost falls on her butt. A strong arms wrapped around her waist.
“Woah, there. Are you okay, young lady?”
Melody opened her eyes and saw a man holding her from falling. “Yeah, I’m fine. I’m sorry for bumping you,”
She stands straight, tapping herself. The man chuckles and puts his hands in his pocket.
“I don’t mind. Sometimes, we have to focus on our thoughts. I understand it,” he smiles.
“I didn’t ruin anything right? Like your clothes or something?” Melody looks up at him. This man looks like a model.
“No, it’s nothing,” he chuckles. “Anyway, I didn’t expect to meet a beautiful woman after all. I must be lucky today after a stressful day,”
She giggles, “Me? Beautiful? Well, thank you I guess…”
“So, where are you heading to? If you don’t mind me asking,” the man questioned. He had been watching her walking and looking so deep in thought but didn’t expect her to bump into him.
“My guard told me to go back to the car so yeah… I’m on my way there,” she answers.
“Guard?” the man arches his eyebrows.
“Mhm. There,” she points at the ice cream truck.
The man looks at the direction she points. He narrowed his eyes and recognized the guard immediately. He knows that silver symbol on his top. He gazes back to Melody, who is waiting for him to say something.
Who expects this girl to be involved with this kind of thing?
“You must be someone important,” he says.
“Not really,” she shrugs her shoulder. “Anyway, I will go now. It’s nice to meet you,”
Melody waved her hands and ran to the car. The man watches every single move that the girl makes. He hums to himself.
“I don’t know Damian keeps a woman in his clan,”
