Underlying darkness
Evelyn’s PoV
Nothing more stable than being left alone in a strange land. Having to deal with loneliness, boredom and a little bit of apprehension was not the best task anybody will be willing to have.
I sat on the couch in the main living room and looked at a painting I had observed before.
I moved as a sound came from the door. I wanted it to be someone of interest but then, the guards of this place had so much freedom of movement.
Freddy had been gone for two days now and aside from meeting my new friend Lorelai at the water side I hardly had human communication.
She hardly spoke much, only a few words and monosyllables and she was okay. I didn’t have a choice but to accept her in her entirety, and oddly enough I grew to enjoy her company.
I could be seated next to her and all the development in my life in the past months would come to mind again and again, when it did it would come with a philosophy for us both to analyze.
Her view on things were always so impressive.
“Hullo!” Miss Lu’s friendly voice called to me and I smiled at her, she had some package in her hands and I wanted to help her but my body had started to behave like it indeed had children in it.
“Hi,” I greeted and joined her. I collected one of the paper bags holding fruits. She was laughing heartily, she always did. I never really got to spend time with her because she was always in the kitchen and didn’t appreciate another’s presence when she was there.
“How are you doing? You look so fat, I like that.” She commented and I tried not to feel insulted, I subconsciously used my free hand to touch my face.
“You can drop it in the store, I will sort it out later.” She called out and I struggled to find where the store was but I located a small section door. The kitchen was bigger than the shoe box I had grown up in.
It’s high class furniture and decor was impressive and I wondered once again how wealthy the family was, not that it mattered, but just really how wealthy?
Alex had a hotel, Freddy had a whole pack of supernatural creatures that could turn into animals, for all I know Jason was even one of them.
“Girlo what are you thinking of?” Miss Lu’s voice called me out of my thoughts and I turned to look at her, trying at concealing my cluelessness.
It seemed like she had been talking for sometime and honestly I hadn’t been listening. I stared blankly at her and decided it was time to change the topic, luckily there was one at my disposal.
“Umm, I was wondering if there was a store in the pack,”
Miss Lu stared at me like I had just asked if the sun shines in the night. I shrugged and she laughed, a hearty and friendly laughter.
“Of course we do! It’s called the Bukka, Old wolf Rafael runs it, one of these days I’ll lead you there, I’m sure the town will love you…” a knock on the main door interrupted her and both our interests were piqued.
The town was aware that Freddy was on a pack mission so it was weird that anyone would come calling.
“Reginald will handle it,” Miss Lu said, referring to the butler, the knock came again and she groaned and walked out of the kitchen. I followed her closely as she made her way to the main door.
She swung it open and Lorelai stood on the other side looking as pretty and virginal as usual. I was surprised that she had come all the way to the packhouse to seek me out.
I didn’t go to the water side as usual but there was no particular reason behind it.
“Lorelai Davidson, what are you doing here?” Miss Lu asked her and I could swear I heard a hint of hostility in her tone, it was unlike Miss Lu. Why could that be? Miss Lu was the sweetest person I knew and so was Lorelai.
“She came for me! She’s my new friend. I met her on my trips to the lake. I’m guessing you know her,” I said, trying to ease any tension that was underlying.
“What do you mean? Lu knows everybody in town,” Lorelai said to my surprise and I also was surprised to see Miss Lu blush, it seemed like they had a Love burn relationship.
“Oh please! It’s been a while you didn’t even come to check on me!” Miss Lu challenged and Lorelai grimaced.
“It’s a small town. I thought I would meet you, but I didn’t.” Lorelai said simply and Miss Lu stiffened.
“It is what it is, it doesn’t matter that much. You both can get on with your day, I have dinner to make.” She responded and left immediately, Lorelai didn’t bother to be bothered about Miss Lu’s countenance.
“Those were the longest words I’ve heard you say.” I said to her and she smiled, she never laughed.
She had this deep sense of melancholy about her that even though I found it endearing in a very odd sense but her coming here to find me made me feel loved.
“I can say more.” She assured me and I laughed, I pulled a coat from the rack, one of Freddy’s and closed the door behind us. I noticed her eyes running through the clothing and I smiled at her.
“Do you like it?” I asked and did a little swirl, I felt big. Maybe Miss Lu hadn’t lied, maybe this was already me getting huge. I was a pregnant woman!
“It looks so familiar,” she muttered and I nodded.
“How long have you been a member of this pack?” I asked as I skipped down the path to the water side. She walked at her own pace and I was a few feet in front of her.
This was me testing my own capabilities.
“Since birth,” she answered and I stopped.
“That means you must be friends with Freyja and Freddie,” I asked and she smiled.
“Yes. More with Jeremy.” She responded and my interest was piqued. I wanted to know more, and right there and then I knew she had more connection with them than I would have imagined.
“Tell me all about it,” I said and she stared at me with uncertainty and then held my hands.
“You’ll hear it all.” She assured me and we continued towards the water.
