Alex’s POV
“Do you want them to poke me?” she challenged me and I laughed.
“You do need the needle to be alright.” I said to her and she shook her head, she looked like she was going to disagree.
“I can’t be alright, the doctor and everybody says so,” she said with so much certainty that even I wanted to believe it, but who told a child that they were going to die?”
“What is your name?” I asked and she smiled, she was a pretty child and now that I thought of it, she did look sick. Her honey blonde locks hung limply on her head and her eyes looked lost, the glint he suspected would have been in her eyes were not, it was replaced with eyes that looked like melted snow, pale and without vigour.
“Molly, what is your name?” she dared to ask and I was impressed, she really was a bold child.
“Jason,” I answered and she smiled, her lips were chapped and without colour, I wanted her case.
“Okay let’s go meet mummy then we’ll talk later is that possible?” I asked her and she nodded smiling brighter than before.
We completed the rest of the journey in silence, she had looked at me in confusion when a nurse passing by called me ‘Doctor Wolfe’ I just nodded. I noticed her laboured breathing and had no intention of elongating the conversation.
I literally had no other choice but to take on her case.
“Molly!” a woman’s shrill voice called out as I got to the children’s ward, I heard her before I saw her. The woman that approached me as I walked in was flaming red and she looked so angry I was concerned. Molly wasn’t she spread her hands for the woman to carry her, the lady took her from me then looked at the child in her hands, it was her mother.
“Who are you?” The woman asked and before I could answer Molly chipped in.
“He is Jason, my new friend,” she said proudly, the woman looked at her with deep love and I allowed myself to do a quick assessing, she looked like she was in her late twenties or even early thirties, on closer look I reckoned she may be younger than that but there was this thing stress did to someone.
“I’m Doctor Wolfe, I recently joined the team here,” I said, I was about to ask a series of question when my phone beeped. “Excuse me,” I muttered and moved aside to check, I noticed the other children in the room and they were not as sick as Molly looked to be.
‘Where are you? Meeting has begun,’ it was from HR so I immediately excused myself.
“I will be back, I need to handle something really quick. I will see you later Molly,” I said and she waved at me less enthusiastically and I hoped she didn’t think I wasn’t going to return.
The hall was down the corridor, a little far from the children’s ward, like the other parts of the hospital it was clean and a mixture of white and turquoise.
I could hear voices as I neared the hall and I sighed, deep and despair filled.
“He’s here,” I heard someone say as I walked in, I fought the urge to say something sarcastic, but then, I prided myself on my self-control. I walked over to the empty chair next to another male worker, the same one in HR that had texted me.
The head Doctor’s voice stopped me and I looked over at him, I noticed the Doctor from the coffee and parking lot, I had forgotten her name but I could see that she was looking at me with judging glare.
“Mr Wolfe where have you been? The meeting was fixed for 9:10,” the bald headed head Doctor asked and I was irritated, he had been paying extra attention on anything that concerned me. I had been the best physician and paediatrics in Miami but I thought myself a little out of practice so for now I was doing more of consultation though my reputation still remained.
“I was held up in the hallway,” I said offering a washed up version.
She was the one that spoke, a smug look on her face, she looked like she was getting ‘revenge’.
“The meeting was fixed for 9:10 Mr Wolfe, the least you can do is give an explanation for your tardiness,” she said and it was quiet, they were all waiting on me to say something, before I could release a curt statement, the nurse I met at the hall spoke up.
“Doctor Free,” the way she said it gave me the impression that they were actually friends and this was the nurse’s attempt at being formal. “He was indeed held up at the hall. Molly Michelson left her ward and almost fell off the stairs DOCTOR Wolfe had be the one to pick her up and take her back to the ward. I met them in the corridor.”
It was silent and all eyes were on me probably wondering why I hadn’t thought to share my ‘heroic’ move.
“Well, I hope she is alright” The head Doctor finally said, and stood up to his full length, tardiness forgotten. I was happy to watch the seething anger form in ‘Doctor Frey’s pretty face, I muttered a quiet thank you to the nurse and she smiled back in response.
“Shall we begin?” Dr Robbie – the head Doctor- , there as mumbles of ‘yes’ around the room and finally he smiled, revealing perfect dentitions.
“We are lucky to have the best physician in give states present with us, it is a thing of great pride to welcome into our midst. We have been putting great effort into refining the standards of our hospital and no doubts, having the best two paediatrics and in all of the USA present here.
“Have you met Dr Freyja Langdon?” He asked and pointed at mood coffee pants she didn’t look particularly pleased to be classified in the same category as me. “She’s the other lead Doctor and also a skunk donor of the hospital,” she gave me a smug look, I saw a glint of something more in her eyes and it wasn’t anger, it was something more feral, more unhuman.
“Welcome” she muttered and sensing our awkwardness, Dr Robbie took over and the rest of what was said fell on deaf ears.
The meeting came to an end and it all fell on deaf ears, I only spoke when I heard my name through the reoccurring thoughts of the girl named Molly and to add to my headache, Freyja Langdon seems like she was going to be a problem one I didn’t particularly care for.
I stood up after exchanging handshakes with everybody but Free but it was expected, she wasn’t my favourite person.
“Well, hello,” I said to her as the room emptied, she shot me an annoyed glance and I shrugged.
“What were you doing with Molly Michelson?” she asked instead and I raised a questioning brow, she didn’t break her glare, she maintained the intense eye contact and I settled back on the chair opposite hers.
“Are you the Dr handling her case?” I asked and her quiet judgment told me all I needed to know.
“You are deflecting. She is currently without hope and it hurts me to say it but it is, I’ve been her Doctor all through the journey, I went on a week’s break and my head is clearer now, I can see the reality, even face it. I will advise you to ditch any martyr like obsession you must have developed.” She advised and I watched her, that look popped up again and aside from her strong personality vibe, I could see something deeper, more feral. She had to be supernatural.
“I only have the option of peace in my wardrobe, and maybe team work. Maybe she still has hope, kidney diseases has seen lesser opponents.” I said, trying at flattery. She was unflinching and there was something more when it came to her.
“I don’t know what you’re up to Wolfe, what secrets you hold but I want you to stay as far away from it as you can. Welcome once again.” She said and walked out.
In that moment, I knew I wasn’t going to stay far away from her, at least until I unravel every part that was her.
