Evelyn’s Pov
I think I hated him
I packed up some of Alex’s shirt inside my bag and a Jean I saw in the spare bedroom. It probably belonged to one of his many lovers and I didn’t mind, he wouldn’t see me again.
Immediately I saw Jason slip out of the room a little after midnight. I had not been able to sleep and watching him evade me rubbed me off the wrong way.
I had tried to understand what it was that we shared that made me feel so drawn to him but his response had been dismissive and distant. His rejection had hurt.
I didn’t remember what had happened for the most part of my life and I really needed somebody, anybody to just be there for me but it seemed I would have to adopt another identity and move on.
I slipped out of the hotel unnoticed, I didn’t see any large amount of money hanging around anywhere so I had stolen two watches that looked expensive.
My name is Emma Wright, an orphan and I have worked as a cleaner in a hospital in Miami. I didn’t want them to be able to track me, not Alex that didn’t care and definitely not Jason.
“Watch where you’re going!” A taxi man yelled as I hurried across the street, my shoes were tight and I was uncomfortable.
I wanted to cry but then I realized I wasn’t even within Five mile distance from the hotel and I was already tired.
I didn’t know where I was going to sell the watches but I had heard one of the girls from the hotel talk about a particular ‘Don Fredo’ and how he sold jewelries for a less expensive price, they had wanted to buy from him and Liza may have mentioned that it was usually stolen jewels.
“Hi,” I greeted a weird looking lady cloaked in a hundred winter coats. She seemed to be selling them and I wondered what sort of system that was.
The area was shady and I had to walk a far distance before I came here, it was rowdy in the usual Miami vibe but there seemed to be a sort of formation, I was instantly filled with fear.
It was only when I neared the lady and she looked at me with amusement and irritation in her eyes that I noticed I was the only one on that side of the street.
“What is it you want?” She asked me, her voice was gruff and definitely matched her look.
“I’m looking for someone, I heard he buys jewels. I have some for sale. His name is Fredo,” I explained and her head shot up on hearing the name.
“Who the hell are you and don’t you know you’re looking for trouble?” She asked me and just then a loud noise like cars boomed in my ear. I turned around and they were in fact cars, race cars and they were four of them all shiny and charged up.
I looked from the cars to the lady with the quotes. Four men hopped off the car and shook hands, they were laughing and slapping themselves on the back. A form of greeting?
My eyes caught the taller of them, he didn’t smile or laugh, just an intense aura and a handsome face. Maybe it was the loss of most of my memories but I found him really attractive.
“Fredo! Some chits out here looking for you! Hope you didn’t plant your seeds in her!” The lady shouted, making me jump in fear. I wondered where he was and who she was addressing.
It was only when the tall racer came towards us did I realize that this handsome chunk of human was the Don Fredo they spoke so boredly about.
“What did she want?” He asked in a thick French accent that I found attractive. What was going on?
“She says something about jewelry, I don’t know what she’s talking about.” The coat lady said and I felt a little on the hot seat, the rest of the crew came out on the street and my suspicion that it was a format was confirmed.
His eyes touched me for the first time since he came over here and I felt like melting under his brandy eyes. It bored into me and it felt like I knew me and all of my secrets, I felt naked but not the kind I wanted to be with him.
“Who are you and what do you know about my Jewelry?” He asked and I didn’t know what to say, I was the one with the gold to sell what were they talking about?
“I just have some pieces of gold watches I want to sell, I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I stammered and he leaned in and looked at me, I felt uncomfortable under his scrutiny.
It was when I blinked that I realized it was quiet, all of the other racers had reduced their noise to a whisper and I wasn’t hallucinating but all eyes were on me.
“Come with me,” he said and I heard gasps from every corner.
I followed him lamely clutching the party pack bag containing the jewels tightly against my hips.
“Where are you taking me?” I asked him as we passed through a small passageway beside a three story high antique store.
“Don’t you want to sell jewelry again?” He asked me and I struggled to keep up with him. We were going too far and then we were in a totally different location, it was more quiet and I could see a single building at the far end of the road.
“Wait I’m tired, please just let me catch my breath,” I pleaded and surprisingly he did wait, I placed my hands on my knees and struggled to catch my breath.
He grabbed me by my arm and leaned to my level, his liquid brown eyes sparkling with something feral and attractive.
“Who are you and what is your mission here?” He asked me, his accent was suddenly clear, he was American?
“I am Emma, and I really really just want to sell you some watches. I need money to go to California, I have these each and….” His fingers went to my lips and he got his desired reaction because I paused.
“I like you, I’ll keep you,”
