Fear of death

Evelyn POV
I was mid-drowning, I wanted to cry, but it was difficult to cry when you were going to die.
Was this my fate? To die in the hands of my boss’ lover.
“Who the hell do you think you are? You bitch!” She was shouting and I was struggling, with a diet of just pancakes I didn’t have enough power to fight back.
“Please let me go!” I cried desperately, I didn’t know how we had gotten here but my face was really in the tub and any more minute I may be dead.
She let me go and I was shocked that was all it had taken for her to let me go. I gasped for air and before I blanched I saw the blurry face of my recent fantasies.
I woke up to the low mumbles of masculine voice, deep and rich. I was on a strange bed, well I couldn’t tell what was weird because I didn’t know how my previous bed had been.
“I think she’s awake,” One said and two faces were looking at me, Jason’s and a doctor, I knew because he had a stethoscope dangling on his neck.
“Hi,” I said and it followed with a series of coughing.
“Don’t try to speak,” the doctor said and I nodded. I hadn’t died! Jason had been the one to come in.
“PTSD,” I heard Jason say and the other doctor nodded, they said some things I didn’t understand and finally the doctor left.
“He left? Who is going to take care of me?” I asked him and he looked amused for a second.
“I find it offensive that you think I’m not a doctor enough to take care of you,” he teased and I flushed with the realization that he was a doctor, I had seen that just the other day.
“I’m sorry,” I muttered, I sounded like I was choking and my throat felt constricted.
“Don’t bother to speak, we haven’t spoken like normal people before.” He said kindly and I appreciated his simplicity and kindness, I felt bad enough for not remembering who he was clearly.
I didn’t want to diminish his capability to perform his profession.
He didn’t seem like the white collar type, he had that brash handsomeness about him that suggested something more tough and hot.
“You don’t look like a doctor,” I said out loud without thinking.
He raised an amused brow then drew close to me, he held my hands and adjusted me to a seating position.
“Really? What do I look like then?”
“A Greek god, what I imagine Adonis would look like,” I blurted out. What was wrong with me?
He laughed out loud and I saw a glimpse of warmth in his eyes. I wanted to reach out and turn his cheeks.
“I think you’re on too many pills Aphrodite, you need more sleep, I would leave you to rest and come back later.” He said, but that was not what I wanted. I wanted something warm, something, him.
“I’m fine,” I whispered, I watched his eyes roam my face and then he stood up straight, his eyes glinting with something feral.
“I’ll be back,” he said and walked out. I wondered if he had also had that urge to take me right here on this bed, because I had.
Alex’s Pov
“How is the girl?” Jessica asked me, and I find it great that even with her ‘moody countenance she still cared about the girl.
I had come to her office and been a pest for most of my stay in Dulva. She had been there when I received the call from Melissa and I hadn’t missed the look of jealousy when she flirted with me over the phone.
I had also seen the smug look when Jason told me of what she had done to Evelyn, I knew Melissa had a bit of a psychotic personality and I even found it freaky in bed.
“My friend is with her. I trust he will keep her safe,” I told her and she nodded, oddly satisfied.
“So when are you leaving my office, sorry, when are you leaving Dulva? As you can see your normal life is going on without you.” Jessica said as she tapped away on her keyboard, we hadn’t gotten around to talking about deeper matters, we were always skimming over trivial issues.
I watched her as she subconsciously swept a lock of thick black hair behind her ears and I had fought the urge to reach out and frame her face myself.
She seems troubled and I knew she was overworking, she had that eye bag under her eyes and though I found them sexy I knew excessive stress had put them there.
“I have been too engrossed in matters of business and I need a break, besides, the hotel is doing really well.” I replied and she nodded.
My excuse for always being with her was she was the only sensible person in the park, she was but it really wasn’t, it gave me great pleasure to watch her do anything at all, when she tapped away at that computer like she was doing now or when she talked about fabrics, I enjoyed watching her do everything but talk to that mongrel she was seeing.
“No really, why are you here Alex?” She asked me, stopping what she was doing and allowing her pretty eyes to access me
“Because I can, it’s my park.” I insisted and she scoffed, from any other person I would have considered it inappropriate but this was unconventional Jessica!
“You rejected me, left town, returned again, I confirmed the rejection and your next line of action is to trail me around town. Say something that makes sense immediately!” She teased and I smiled, I actually did smile.
“I am bored really, and I was hoping you would be pining for me and hoping for me to come back. It hurts to see you’ve moved on,” I teased, but I knew there was a hint of truth In it.
I wasn’t a sadist and in fact wanted her ‘success’ but when there were some preconditions associated with my decision to reject her as mate, many things were to be considered.
“Haha very funny,” she responded dryly and sighed, looking up to face me. “I hope you do know, your presence is distracting and when you’re gone my boss may decide to sack me,” it was right there and then I made the decision to buy the company.
“Sack you for having a friend? Tell me something worse,” I scoffed and she did.
“I received a query from the CEO. I was letting a male parade in the workplace. So when I ask when you’re leaving Dulva I really mean when would you stop following me everywhere,” Jessica said in her usual sassy tone and I realized that the letter had really troubled her.
“Oh,” I said. How much did it take to buy a fashion house? “Who runs this place?” I asked her after a few seconds of quiet.
“My boss,” she responded and did the thing with the hair again
“Well it’s definitely not the penguins of Madagascar!” I responded and she laughed, a warmth seeping into her green eyes. Did she know how beautiful she was?
“Alonso Delo, he is nasty and broke. He wants to make every tiny penny off this place but he favors cheap fabrics and old styles. I’m the magazine editor and I find it hard to lie constantly about the qualities of these dresses, they are not the best as I claim!” Jessica joked and I understood it was her humor, dry and dark, it only got more refined with time.
“This should be considered as a sort of betrayal to your company,” I commented and she laughed, it was different from the subdued and awkward one she had been giving for so long. This was more free and lighthearted.
“I assure you they won’t fire me, they are short on staff, and I’m literally an asset, they’d just reduce my salary.” She replied and I delved into my own thoughts.
She loved her job and just didn’t love the way she had to go about it.
When I would leave that evening I called Jason to ask about how things were going, he still had plans to return to his park.
I called my assistant after dropping off Jessica, he picked up on the first ring.
“Good day boss,” Mikey greeted, eager to do something. Hotel business did get boring.
“I need everything you know about Alonso Delo and his firm, there may be a takeover soon.”
“We’re not done with the Roger takeover,” Mikey added and I groaned.
“Handle them both but treat Delo as urgent, he seems tired of his establishment.” I ordered and knew I would have to step in.
I knew the takeover wasn’t necessary but I just couldn’t help myself, and I did have the money to spare.
