And my steel brief case was no where to be seen.
I drew in a sharp breath. Darrell shot a heated glare my way and continued down the hall, stopping as he reached the interrogation room. He keyed in a code and pushed the door open. This would be my first time in here, and more than likely my last.
I took in the contents of the padded room. A single table with two chairs across from each other, steel beams with chains hanging loosely from them, and a set of hand and leg cuffs dangled loosely from both end walls. I shuddered and refocused on the table and the opened steel brief case along with the contents that laid beside it.
I hesitated as I looked to Darrell for some form of reassurance, but found nothing other than coldness shining back at me as he nodded to the interior of the room.
Don’t make me loose what little control I have right now. His voice held no warmth and no sign of the reassurance I found myself so desperately wanting.
I stepped in and cringed. What little confidence I had in approaching Carter with an explanation was slipping through my fingers, and as the door slammed shut, I jumped.
I could have taken Lewis and Leon out with ease, but Darrell, he was almost as good as Carter when cornered. And in the end, my death wouldn’t have meant anything. At least this way, maybe, just maybe I could help Carter save Lea. And in doing so, maybe, just maybe, he would spare my life as he had once done hers.
Darrell grasped my arm and walked me forcefully to the far chair, pulling it out and tossing me into it as if I was a rag doll.
Make one wrong move and I swear to God I will snap your fucking neck myself. Understand ?
I nodded once.
Darrell leaned against the wall facing the door as Lewis and Leon took up defensive positions on either side to the door. No one said anything as the tension built around us. It was a technique that I had used several times, one where we waited to see who was going to break the silence first.
Darrell snapped his head up as the door flew open. My eyes went wide at the feral look on Carter’s face. His mouth was drawn into a dangerously tight line and his steel blue eyes were darker than I had ever seen them.
He stalked to the table and his hands curled around the empty chair, flinging it behind him. His voice was low and deadly as he spoke, the word coming out as a low growl, Why ?
I lowered my head and fought back the fear as I tried to form the words. There was no way he was going to accept any explanation I gave him. I looked up and bit back a scream as his hands wrapped around my throat.
I. Asked. You. Why ?
My voice was barely a whisper as I raised my eyes to his, Because you killed my parents.
Your parents were killed when you were a child.
I held back a bitter laugh. Because that is what I wanted you to think.
Carter loosened his hold on me and walked around to the back of my chair. The hairs on my neck stood up as he leaned down and let his breath fan my neck, If she dies, so do you.
He stood and paced the room, Who do you work for ?
I knew it was pointless to stall ; they were going to get their answers one way or the other.
Miguel.
Carter had been nothing but good to me and it was hurting more for me to betray him than it did to betray Miguel.
I watched as Carter walked to a closet and pulled out a cart. My heart sped up as I took in the vials of clear liquid, the syringes, the knives, the pliers, and various other tools. He noticed my expression, but kept his face unreadable. I should be able to resist, to keep my feelings and thoughts hidden, but the thing was, I didn’t want to.
Boss..
Don’t you ever fucking call me that again. You lost that right when you betrayed us, his voice broke slightly as he finished, when you betrayed Lea.
You, you won’t need to use those. Carter scoffed and I wrung my hands together in my lap as I continued, I’ll tell you everything.
And why should I trust you to do that ? His voice was cold and harder than I had ever heard it.
I swallowed and stared into the broken man’s eyes, Because I know what Victoria and Miguel are planning.
And just how do you know that ? Carter held a long blade in his hand, caressing the cool metal as he looked at me through narrowed eyes.
I paused for a second, taking a deep breath before sealing my fate. I knew what was coming as soon as I spoke the words he was waiting to hear.
Because I am the one that set the entire plan into motion.
Lea’s P. O. V.
I had fallen asleep in Miller’s arms. It wasn’t something I had intended on doing, it was something that had just happened. The stress of everything along the new information he had given me was taking it’s toll on me. I thought I had known what I was going to do once we landed, but now, now I was just as confused as before.
Lea. I felt rough hands gently shake my shoulders. Come on sleepy head. It’s time to wake up.
Uh huh, I wanna sleep. I rolled over and landed on the floor. Ow, that freaking hurt. I rubbed at my tail bone and looked up to see Miller laying over the bed, a rare smile on his face as he looked down at me. Don’t laugh at me you ass hat.
Well, I didn’t tell you to roll off the bed.
Yea, yea. I waved one hand dismissively in the air as I pushed up with the other one. You know that’s the second time I’ve landed on the floor of this damn plane.
Miller chuckled as I stood and sat on the edge of the bed, wiping the sleep from my face.
Let me guess, the first time was when Carter was bringing you to the house ?
I thought back to that night, an array of emotions flowing through me.
Yea. After he killed Marshall, I hid in an abandoned theater. I thought for sure I was next. He and Darrell kept talking about no witnesses. When he found me, he knocked me out instead of putting a bullet in me. I woke up in here with a massive headache and stumbled out of the bed, cursing him for all he was worth.
Miller reached over and brushed back a strand of hair, tucking it behind my ear.
Do you know he broke two of his own rules by keeping you alive ?
I nodded, I remember someone saying something about that. I looked around the room of the plane, So, do you have any idea where the queen bee is taking us ?
Miller shook his head, No, not for sure. Lynx and I have been calculating how long we’ve been in the air versus how long it takes to get to a few places that she’s likely to go, so we have a few ideas, but nothing concrete yet.
I started to giggle.
Miller furrowed his brows, What’s so funny ?
You.
What did I do ? Miller furrowed his brows further.
The way you just answered me all business like. I mean, come on Miller, I’m just me. I’m not some cartel boss. I threw air quotes around the last two words. You don’t have to be all formal with me.
Miller shook his head, You know, with the way your mood swings are Lea, I sometimes think that you are bipolar.
