“Boss.. it’s Penelope”
“Yeah.. what about her?” Liam questioned with a distant and lackluster tone.
“She unexpectedly got involved in an accident” Adrian revealed with an underlying meaning in his voice as he seemed to hint at something.
“Are you serious?”Liam’s face darkened at the news”How did it transpire and who’s behind it?”
“She got hit by a hit-and-run driver but the occurrence was quite complicated when I looked through the location’s CCTV camera”Adrian’s tone was restless as he explained. “Sir, I think it would be easier to explain when we met in person”
“Alright then, I’m on my way. Secure more information before I get to you” Liam replied as he hastened down the stairs to the living room with a grim expression on his face.
“Isabelle” he called out while roaming his eyes around the space to detect her presence.
“Liam, what’s the problem? Where are you in a hurry to go to look like this?” Isabelle, who walked out of the kitchen with a napkin in her palms, queried with a curious glint coupled with nervousness in her eyes as she gazed at her fiance’s disheveled appearance.
“It’s about Penelope”Liam revealed.” I’ll give you a detailed explanation when I get back, but now, just let me go”. Liam, with a swift and decisive stride, headed to his company, his focus solely on the emergency at hand. If his thoughts were on track, then the unfortunate accident must have been masterminded.
“I hope I didn’t make the wrong choice by sending her away?” He muttered anxiously to himself as he pulled his car in front of a large complex building. His thoughts were in disarray, he had a lot on his plate and he hadn’t even devised a plan to counter them yet. A cold shiver went down his throat as he somewhat imagined what his adversaries were up to. Nevertheless, he wasn’t going to back down, at least not until he had made a decisive move.
“Adrian, I need explanations” Liam uttered the moment he barged into the IT department.” What exactly happened?”
“You remembered the last video I showed you, the one with you taking the project Phoenix?” Adrian asked as a tinge of hesitation flashed through his eyes.
Liam raised an eyebrow, wondering what his tech guy was insinuating”Yes, I do. What has that got to do with Penelope’s accident?” He probed curtly irritated at the suspense.
“Well, you see… I had this feeling that something wasn’t right so I kept examining the video until I noticed something….”
“What did you notice, cut to the chase” Liam interrupted him, his impatience was obvious.” What did you notice?”
“You were in a dazed state, just a suggestion on my part, but I think you were under the influence of a substance-induced amnesia” Adrian revealed.
“What?… By amnesia, you mean I was under the influence of substances that affected my memory?” Liam interrogated as he sought clarification to end his confused state.
“Yes sir, and that’s where Penelope comes in. She was the one feeding you with the drugs which I’m sure of, must have been an order from one of your rivals” Adrian expanciated further.
“I knew she was the mole in my house but I never thought she could succumb to such despicable means. Hmph.. and Isabelle trusted her”Liam mumbled to himself with a feeling of disgust, surprise, and confusion all at once. “So, how did she get into an accident?”
“I’ve been on her tail since the day you sent her away. She had a meeting with another woman and it didn’t look pleasant to the eye. They must have had an argument” Adrian stated with his voice laced with clear severity.
“Are you trying to say that the woman she met with was the one who choreographed her accident?” Liam enquired shifting uncomfortably on his seat as the realization dawned on him.
“Exactly boss….” Adrian affirmed Liam’s words.”the woman had made a call after the argument”
“So, this woman.. do you know who she is?” Liam asked with an expectant gaze.
“Not at all sir” Adrian shooked his head in denial. “She must have noticed the CCTV camera, that was why she stood at a blind spot” Adrian explained with clear solemnity.
“Darn!”Liam cursed.” What about her voice, can you recognize it?” Liam asked almost yelling as anger surged through his heart. He felt angry at the thought of the culprit escaping without facing retribution. Even though Penelope had betrayed him, her utmost care and respect to him and his fiancee was still engraved in his heart. He needs to avenge her but first, he ought to get essential information from her. Who was that woman and what was her motive for trying to harm him? For what important reason did Penelope decide to betray him?
“What hospital is she at?” Liam asked as he stood up to leave. He needed to see her.
“Xavier General Hospital” Adrian replied as he likewise stood up to acknowledge his boss.” I haven’t checked on her current situation but I think her family members have been informed. There’s a high probability that you would have an encounter with them”
Then, an idea popped up in Adrian’s head.” Boss, I think you should also go for a medical test. We need the result to confirm if my hunch is right and it would be very useful as evidence in bringing the enemy down” Adrian stated.
“Ugh.. whoever is behind all of this will go down regardless” Liam Callahan scoffed before a question flashed through his mind. ” Have you found anything relating to the press conference commotion?”
“Yes sir, Sarah was right. I’ve located the supposed victim. We’ll fish out the person as soon as possible” Adrian said in assurance. That was Liam’s cue to leave. As he drove away, he silently wished that he would get sure answers to the questions on his mind. Isabelle’s name flashed on his phone as it rang out.
“Where are you?” She asked, her voice filled with a sense of agitation
“I’m on my way to Xavier’s general hospital.. to see Penelope” he responded to her, his expression turned solemn as he imagined how worried she would be about the one person who showed her warmth in his absence.
“Alright, I’m on my way” she declared in a shakened voice as she hung up on Liam without waiting to hear his response.
