“What happened earlier really frightened me. Are you satisfied with such an answer?” Veronica looked at him fearlessly, her eyes clouded with mist.
But Nick did not back down from her challenging gaze to see who was tougher. His black eyes were deep and sharp as if trying to get a quick run through of her soul.
“You have to thank someone in particular, or else I would be the one lying in the hospital bed right now. Or would you rather see me lying on a hospital bed?”
“I didn’t say that!” Nick creased his eyebrows.
Veronica shoved his arm away angrily, stormed out of the bathroom with only the towel wrapped around her naked body, and went straight back to her room.
She took off the bath towel and put on her pajamas.
Nick Cage followed her into the room and watched her silent figure sitting on the edge of the bed.
Of course, he did not want anything to happen to Veronica, and right now, he couldn’t think of even investigating the timely appearance of Toby!
Veronica’s dark expression made him feel dazzled, annoyed and hostile.
“Can you leave me alone?” She avoided meeting his eyes and said, “I want to take a rest.” Feeling a surge of rage, Nick lifted her jaw, and his eyes were compelling. “Are you thinking about him?”
“And why wouldn’t I?” Veronica yelled. “He took a bullet for me, and for goodness’ sake, I had to at least take him to a hospital! He could’ve died, and I didn’t leave until I made sure that his life was far from danger. Besides, I was only a little worried about him. I told Suzanne that I took him to the hospital and then I left, okay?”
Her narrative was very insipid that the thought of her worrying about Toby barely bugged him, yet he still doubted the genuineness of her words. But her sincerity and frankness, concealed any traces of deception, if there were any.
Observing how helpless Veronica was, what Nick Cage wanted to do to her that she’d have no other choice but to succumbed to which naturally depended on his choice, and even his mood was obviously compromised.
As a result, Nick Cage can’t even use any means at the moment. Her face was so cold and tight that even his hand holding her chin could tell how extremely stiff it was.
Veronica lowered her eyes and fell on one of the black buttons of Nick’s shirt. “If that’s not enough, I really don’t know what to do.”
“Are you angry with me?”
“No.” She immediately replied, without having second thoughts.
“And you are not afraid of me dealing with Toby?” Nick asked intensely.
Veronica was baffled and for a moment, did not know how to react. She raised her head and looked at him. “Will you?”
“There is nothing in this world that I would not dare to do!”
Veronica said calmly, “I really feel guilty about what happened to him! And once you feel guilty, you’ll find a way to make it up to him! Don’t you think so, too?”
Nick Cage’s face was livid, and the veins in his patient neck were beating. “Are you threatening me?”
“Who dares to threaten the head of the KING Group? It’s not like I’m not fully aware of how territorial you are.” Veronica sneered. Not only did she make the following remarks, but she also pushed his hand off her chin and looked at Nick defiantly.
He looked at her with his darting eyes, and the terrible atmosphere in the room was about to burst! In the end, he did not mind the restlessness he felt on his chest and blazed, “I am staying here tonight!”
With that said, he turned around and went out.
Veronica was left till sitting on the edge of the bed, the rough touch of Nick’s grip on her chin still lingering there.
Whether Nick would stay there or not, she was in no place to resist.
She rolled over and went to bed with the guilt wrapping around her. But the restlessness she was feeling inside was keeping her wide awake that she kept tossing around on the bed.
Still, her body wouldn’t stop from shaking.
At that moment, she was not afraid of Nick dealing with Toby, but she thought that it was really dangerous.
She had to admit that she was angry and acted impulsively.
But what else could she do?
She had been cornered.
Meanwhile, Nick was standing under the shower in the bathroom, with his face still tied in knot, not getting much better than before.
Veronica’s words and eyes were like thorns, piercing through him and irritating him more than ever.
His eyes were cold and his breathing became heavy.
He would not allow her to be anywhere near Toby again.
The next day Veronica went to work at the TV station as usual.
She came in Nick’s car this morning. Although they shared the same bed last night, they still hadn’t spoken since they woke up.
The intense presence of Nick Cage clung to her, making her uncomfortable.
She knew that she had crossed the line to Nick, and she waited nervously for him to lash out his anger at her. Yet, he didn’t do anything, which surprised her a little bit.
That’s all.
In the studio, the director was talking to Veronica about work, when she looked up and saw that Suzanne was standing not far away, and she felt like she was distracted by her.
Suzanne came forward after the director walked away.
“Suzanne.” Veronica still called her the same as before.
She could not quite put her finger on it, but she was certain that the current Suzanne and the previous Suzanne seemed to be two different people. Or was it because of the guilt that she was feeling?
“Do you still want it to work?”
Veronica’s eyes flashed and said nothing.
“That’s right. Since it’s unfortunate that you can’t be together, it’s obviously pointless to keep on seeing each other! So Veronica, don’t you think you’ve gone too far?” Suzanne asked.
Veronica thought that Suzanne said too much about not seeing Toby Cage, but it was hypocritical!
“You should have turned away at the sight of Toby instead of throwing yourself in front of him and causing the situation to get out of hand!” Suzanne spoke harshly.
Veronica looked at her in silence and did not retaliate.
“If you really do care about Toby, then you better not show up! All his injuries are because of you! You are really heartless!”
She felt powerless to argue and deny Suzanne’s claims, but what she said were all true!
Toby was shot, and it was all her fault.
Even before his old wound healed, there he was, trying to take in the all the salts that she rubbed on his wound.
“What have I ever told you? Uncertainty hurts the most. But did you listen to me? What else do you want to have when you already have Nick, and now, you are trying to hoard Toby?”
Veronica’s character has been put to question!
Even if she was wronged, in the eyes of Suzanne, she was a merciless person.
“What are you doing?”
A familiar voice stunned both Suzanne and Veronica, and they both looked at the door.
Toby Cage appeared in front of them. He still has a bleed pallor on his face.
Veronica Parker was dumbfounded.
Suzanne rushed to his side. “Why are you already out of the hospital? Are you crazy? I just came to visit you at the hospital yesterday. Toby, would you stop worrying me so much?”
Toby stared at Veronica and said nothing.
Suzanne looked at his line of sight. “What, are you here to see her? If I didn’t know any better, I would think she was the patient.”
“Are you done?” Toby asked under his breath.
“Fine! I’m not needed in here, right?” Suzanne was so angry that she just left.
When she got outside and stopped to wait by the doorway, she couldn’t help but still worried about Toby.
Veronica slowly walked towards Toby. He was well-dressed and looked the same as usual, but she knew how badly he was hurt under those fancy-looking clothes.
“Why did you leave the hospital? The doctor said that if your arm doesn’t recover properly, you wouldn’t be able to use like you normally do.”
“Why didn’t you go to the hospital?”
“I don’t have to go.” Veronica Parker said coldly.
“You really suck.”
She did not say a word.
“Just yesterday, I risked my life for you. But, must you really become indifferent? As if you didn’t cry yesterday begging for me not to leave you?”
Veronica Parker tilted her face and looked away. She really shouldn’t have cried.
