“Yes!” The bodyguard next to him abruptly said in a panic.
Nick got into the car and slammed the door. The engine whirred as he drove off resolutely.
Kevin could not believe how ruthless his own son could be that he will no longer be surprised if he would commit patricide. He has borne witness to his own son’s impolite behavior and he could only imagine how much hatred his son had for him.
“Please leave!” The bodyguard was eager to dismiss him.
“If you won’t go, don’t blame us for hitting you!” The guard rudely threatened.
Kevin took a last look at the furious bodyguard and went back to his car. He revved the engine and took off.
In the car, Veronica felt the oppressive atmosphere of silence. She could not help herself to feel anxious.
She was thinking about what happened a while ago with Kevin. Despite being Nicks’s father, Veronica knew very little about the man. He might be thinking that if he would stand as a grandfather to their children, it would bring back his son’s respect and adoration towards him. Veronica shook her head upon realizing how Kevin knew nothing about Nick.
“Who was that man, Daddy?” Nick’s daughter asked him curiously while sitting on his lap.
“Someone who does not matter.” He simply explained to the child.
“Is he making you sad?” Cathy wondered.
“No.” He said and gave her a small smile of assurance.
Peter ran to his side. “We will help you, Daddy!” He said viciously, unaware of the past grievances his father had for Kevin. All the other kids gathered around him as well.
The hostility was shaken off for a while as Nick looked at his kid’s innocent eyes.
“Alright, then.”
Veronica’s taut nerves loosened. She knew well that Nick is emotionally unstable and if anything happened, she is the one who would mostly be implicated.
She’s also aware that Nick will always see her as Chloe’s daughter. That is seemingly the reason why he vented out his anger on her for more than once.
Upon arriving at school, Peter and the rest of their kids followed his teacher inside, leaving Veronica and Nick alone.
“You can go ahead now. I’ll go in and have a look for a while. It’s more convenient if I take the subway back to the company later.”
Nick just gave her his usual cold stare and didn’t say anything. He turned and got inside the car.
The car took off and Veronica watched as the Rolls-Royce accelerated to avoid congestion until it is no longer in sight.
She knew that the only thing that restrained Nick’s anger in the car was the fact that their children were also there. Otherwise, she knew for certain that he could not keep himself calm around her. That is the reason why she chose to use the subway to go back rather than to be in the same car with Nick who has a terrible anger management problem.
Instead of going inside the school as she said to Nick, Veronica went to the subway which is a ten-minute walk from the school.
On the other hand, Isabella was still trying her luck to get closer with Nick despite the impending danger it may bring.
Veronica continued walking towards the Subway’s entrance but realized that everyone was looking and smiling at her.
She wondered why she kept on getting second glances from people and even touched her face to check if there’s something stuck on it.
She started to feel uncomfortable with all the stares and glances she’s receiving from people. All of a sudden, she heard a car screeched into a halt. She was stunned upon seeing the familiar black car. The window in the passenger’s seat slowly opened, revealing Nick’s formidable face.
Veronica stood with her mouth slightly open in surprise. She wondered what on earth made Nick go back and follow her.
“Where are you taking them?” He asked.
“Sorry?” Veronica was initially puzzled. He followed Nick’s gaze and realized that there were six children standing in line behind her.
“Oh my God! How did you get out?” She was so surprised to find her little ones in the subway. She realized that she was so occupied with her own thoughts that she didn’t even notice them sneaking behind. That is the reason why people kept on smiling at her.
The children lunged and hugged her legs. “We want to go to work with Mom!” Peter shouted.
“We want to work with you so we can see you every day, Mom!” Cathy said in excitement.
“We don’t want to read!” Julie yelled.
“We don’t like it, Mom!” Josh added
“If we go to work with you, are we going to be workmates, Mom?” Lily asked.
“Yes! We can be mom’s workmates!” Daniel nodded in agreement.
Veronica could not help herself to smile in amusement at her six children’s sweet and innocent ramblings. They would definitely cause a sensation if they would appear on TV. The only thing that she’s worried about is her children’s intolerance when it comes to reading.
“I’m sorry!” The kindergarten children rushed in panic. “I was doing something and when I turned around, they are no longer there. Please forgive my negligence.” Veronica could see how terrified and sorry the teacher was. It was enough for her and she didn’t want the teacher to be further reprimanded by Nick.
“That’s alright. My children are indeed very naughty.”
Veronica squatted to have a word with Peter. “This will not happen again, okay? You should be good at school and please don’t cause any trouble to the teacher. Mom will go to work, and you guys go to school. If you ever do it again, mom will be very worried.” She tried to explain to his son. Are you going to sleep with us tonight, Mom?” Cathy asked.
Six innocent eyes waited expectantly for her answer. She knew that she could not refuse her children. “Mom is not busy today. So, yes. I will be sleeping with you tonight.”
“Yay!” The children cheered in joy.
“I think I should take them now to school.” The teacher said to Veronica.
“Once again, I apologize for my children’s behavior.” She replied politely.
“It’s no worries.” The teacher smiled at her. She then ushered the children on the way back to school.
After walking a few steps, Peter turned around and waved his tiny hands at Veronica.
“We’ll be good at school, Mom!”
“Very well, honey!” She waved at him too.
“Get inside.” Nick’s growl snapped Veronica out of reverie. Without the children, she could barely stand Nick’s presence.
She didn’t understand why Nick came back for her. He must be in a dire need to vent out his anger to someone.
Nick’s bodyguard opened the door for her. She hesitated a little but eventually get in and closed the door.
The Rolls-Royce sped up until all the other cars began to blur.
“The child has no idea what he’s talking about,” Nick said in an attempt to break the piercing silence inside the car.
“I really didn’t notice them behind me.” She said nonchalantly.
She wondered what’s going on in Nick’s mind at that very moment.
“Anyway, are you taking me to the TV Station?” she asked him.
“Yes.”
She knew that there was no point in asking. Nick is such an unpredictable person who would usually make decisions on a whim. The man’s thoughts are unfathomable.
The car pulled over outside the TV Station. Nick grabbed his phone and asked someone to send the little ones to the TV Station. He knew that it was the right time.
