“I think you’d better not know.”
Veronica is not happy when she said, “Are you scaremongering?”
“If you don’t believe it, you can go ask Nick yourself.”
Veronica angrily said, “How could I ask him?”
The last Veronica tried to ask about it, her neck was almost bitten off.
It’s not like she’s getting impatient.
Toby then said, ” So you can only trust me. You must leave the KING Group before Nick finds out.”
She replied, “Why should I listen to you? It’s none of your business!” With that, Veronica hung up the phone.
She then thought she might as well change her cell phone number.
For a man who betrayed her for another woman, he probably must have no shortage of women that he kept bothering her to do something.
However, Veronica’s mind was preoccupied with what Toby had said. She was afraid that in the end, this could turn out into something even more serious. After all, with what the KING Group was known for, Toby was saying the same thing.
Although he didn’t say exactly what it was, it left the same amount of panic in her chest.
‘What bad things did Chloe, my mother had with the Cage family to sever the relationship between Nick Cage and his family?’
‘If that’s the case, what’s with Chloe and the happiness she was pursuing?’
Veronica felt the pain in her chest as she got out of the taxi and paid.
She hadn’t been in a taxi for years.
After paying, she got out of the car and looked up. The lights in the house were turned on, and one of them belonged to her.
She thought, ‘Should I leave the KING Group?’
The next day in Kay’s office…
Kay was surprised as she asked, “You’re going to resign?”
“Yes,” Veronica said firmly.
Kay explained, “I thought you already knew what your situation was. You are here, which means Mr. Cage wanted you to be here. Of course, that’s what I meant. You work hard and carefully, and your colleagues will love you. So, it’s a little awkward.” Kay said jokingly said, “If I let you leave without his permission, I’ll be in trouble. You’re not going to be so heartless, are you?”
“You’re exaggerating, aren’t you?”
“It’s no exaggeration. You still don’t know much about Mr. Cage.”
“What if I don’t want my salary and just leave? What do you think will Mr. Cage do?”
“I’m afraid you will get caught by Mr. Cage even before you can leave Illinois.”
Veronica was speechless as she thought, ‘Caught? Must the word ‘caught’ be used? I’m not a fugitive!’
When Veronica returned to the secretarial department, she was very negative about her predicament.
‘I can’t stay and be afraid. And yet, I can’t just walk away even if I want to.’
‘What should I do now?’
The phone on the desk rang. It was Kay. She said, “Make two cups of coffee and go to Mr. Cage’s office.”
“Two?”
“Yes.”
She hung up and thought, ‘Who else was there in his office? It must be someone not from a high position level, otherwise, he would have requested a cup of tea.
She stood and went to the pantry to prepare the coffee.
She knew resistance was futile.
The staff next to her pushed the door open for her and Veronica went inside with a tray of coffee.
There were two cups of coffee on the tray.
Upon entering, she saw Nick’s long legs. He was sitting on the sofa. When he was in that demeanor, people were usually afraid.
But Veronica shook her hand when she saw who Nick was with. The tray she was holding almost fell off.
Toby looked at her calmly as if nothing had happened between them.
Veronica’s heart was pounding.
‘Why was Toby here? What is he doing here? Would he talk about her relationship with Chloe Bowen?’
When Nick’s sharp black eyes looked at her, Veronica immediately came to her senses, steadied herself, and bring the coffee to the table.
The first cup was placed next to Nick’s arm. He was wearing a valuable watch on his wrist as if it had its own poise and charm.
For a big shot like Nick, others treated him respectfully and with fear wherever he went.
Now Toby was sitting here, without any sign of respect to him, lazily sank into the sofa, and was staring at Veronica’s face.
As soon as the second cup of coffee was placed next to Toby, she heard him say, “There is a shortage of people in my company recently. This girl here is nice. Why don’t you just give her to me, Nick?”
Veronica suppressed the inner tension she was feeling. She really wanted to lift his face, spill the coffee in it so he couldn’t talk any nonsense here.
She was afraid to look at Nick’s face, but the atmosphere in the office became depressing and it made her nervous.
Suddenly Nick asked, “Did you hear what he said?” Nick looked up and looked at her with falcon-like black eyes as if he would swallow her and tear her apart.
The air smelled of danger, that Veronica did not dare answer.
“Even if I signed a contract with the KING Group, I can’t be kicked around like a ball to be passed around, can I?”
Veronica looked at Toby angrily and continued, “If you are so short of people, you might as well go to the front desk and have a look. That’s where I came from before being promoted to the secretarial department.”
Toby’s eyes fell on Veronica’s face, gave her a meaningful look, and then stood up. He said to Nick, “In that case, I’ll forget about it. I have something to do, Nick. I must go.”
With that, he really left the office. The door closed leaving only Nick and Veronica inside the office.
Inside the room, it felt as if there were already a lot of pressure between them.
Since Toby left, she was about to get the cup of coffee and go out.
Suddenly, Nick asked, “You’re going to resign?” The sudden sound of deterrence from Nick made Veronica straighten up.
Kay had told Nick about it.
Nick opened the cigarette box next to him, bit it on his lips, lit the lighter, and snapped as if it had hit Veronica’s, fragile heart.
The white smoke spread out, and Nick’s oppressive expression was even deeper and harder to read. But that pair of black eyes were sharp and seemingly undiminished.
It was like he was trying to pierce through Veronica’s body with it.
Nick played with the silver lighter on his hand and spun it faster. Finally, he asked, “Why can’t you just follow?”
“I am just a staff of the KING Group. Why waste your time with someone like me? I resigned because I want to leave Illinois.”
Nick’s voice was low but strong and fierce when he said, “You can’t even touch the edge of Illinois without my permission.”
Veronica asked, “Why is that? I just want to leave Illinois. It wouldn’t affect you, would it?”
Nick did not smoke the cigarette in his hand after two puffs. Instead, he put it on the handrail. It left a trail of smoke burning silently. His long, bony fingers, seemed casual but with a sense of beauty. A pair of black eyes locked on her in a deep and sinister way, that made her feel she had nothing to hide.
Nick’s voice fell as low as a dumb voice when he said, “Come here.”
But there was a kind of resounding momentum and it made Veronica’s body tense in an instant.
“I… I have work to do. I’m going out first,” Veronica said as she forgot about the cup of coffee and turned around to leave.
Analyzing their position in the room, the only way for her to get to the door was to walk behind the sofa where Nick was sitting.
Veronica thought that as long as Nick wouldn’t stand, he couldn’t stop her.
However, as soon as she was behind Nick, his arm was suddenly tightened around her. The fear made Veronica numb with fear and it reached her scalp.
