From that position, she could see Nick’s face above her. From her point of view, she could see that his protruding Adam’s apple was extremely sexy. From that point, she continued looking at the outline that connected his cold and hard jawlines. It looked like a very delicate carving, with his thin lips pursing into an arc of tenderness.
Veronica, who’s mind suddenly became hazy, faintly mumbled, “Mr. Cage?”
Nick replied almost unfathomably, “Don’t move.”
Veronica bit her lip. She dared not to make any movement. But she thought, ‘Isn’t this a little too intimate? Here I am, lying on the lap of my immediate boss.’
It was true that she was not feeling well, but she would rather sit than lie like that in her boss’s lap.
Her mind began to wander again, ‘This Nick Cage is unfathomable. Just now, he just horribly watched and let her pinch her neck, and then he suddenly became like this.’
She quietly lay like that, while Nick just sat lazily in his seat. He was looking out of the window, as if she was not lying on his lap, ignoring her as something irrelevant.
Now that his attention was no longer focused on her, her nervousness was lessened. It also didn’t take long for her weak body to relax.
Suddenly, an even sound of breathing came to her ears.
Nick withdrew his eyes from the view outside and his stares fell slightly on Veronica’s pale face. He stared at her as she was resting on his lap. His deep eyes were like a black hole in the night that could engulf everything.
It didn’t take long before Veronica fell asleep and began to dream.
She dreamt that she was young. Her parents had divorced and her mother insisted on leaving. Her mother had a bag with her. Veronica chased after the taxi desperately, hoping that her mother would take her with her. She badly wanted to be with her mother.
However, the taxi just drove forward, without any signs or intention of stopping.
Veronica ran so fast but then she fell heavily to the ground after chasing helplessly. She could not help but cry.
She could only watch helplessly as the taxi carrying her mother got farther away until she could not see it anymore.
Then her daddy caught up with her and kicked her. He angrily said, “Did I just fucking raise you for nothing? I can’t believe you want to go with that bitch! Do you believe that I will beat you to death?”
She cried and dodged, but she couldn’t avoid her father’s kicks and punches. She helplessly pleaded, “Dad, please stop. It hurts.”
Nick’s black eyes looked slightly agitated at the restless woman asleep in his lap. Veronica was pale. Beads of sweat were on her forehead and she was raving.
Nick bowed his head and tried to hear what she was saying. His face loomed over Veronica’s little face. His posture looked aggressive.
Suddenly, Veronica woke up in shock after having a bad dream and said, “Don’t.”
She unconsciously sat up and came to a sudden pause.
“Well?”
Nick found Veronica’s lips directly near his lips. He was so caught off guard. His deep black eyes move slightly as he gazed at her lips. He then put his hand on the back of her head and gave her a deep kiss.
The kiss was a little hard. Veronica was still in a daze as the vision from her dream still plagued her mind. After shaking it off, she came back to her senses and immediately realized what she and Nick were doing.
Alarmed by this, she reached out to push Nick’s sturdy chest, struggled to get off him, sat down to the other side, and looked at Nick breathlessly and defensively.
Veronica was both annoyed and ashamed as she asked, “You. Why did you touch me? ”
Nick rubbed the corner of his mouth with his thumb. It was the saliva left during the kiss. Both were unsure if it was Nick’s or Veronica’s. Nick playfully asked her, “Didn’t you send it up by yourself?”
Veronica was speechless. Her face was so red with shame. She fell asleep on Nick’s lap. How could she expect this to be normal? She was so naive to think so.
Nick’s voice was low when he asked, “What did you dream about?”
She replied, “Nothing. Just something that happened from the past.” With that, Veronica dodged his glances.
Nick’s black eyes looked at her coldly. She could feel the pressure all over her body.
Veronica thought, ‘What happened to this man? Did I say something wrong?’
Looking outside, she realized that the car had stopped and had parked at the Sunshine District.
Feeling a little helpless, she then said, “I… I’m here. Thank you, Mr. Cage.” Veronica stepped out of the car quickly and closed the door for him.
And just like last time, she stood by the side of the road and watched Nick disappear from a distance.
Deep inside, Veronica really wanted to cry at the thought of her walking from where she was dropped off, all the way to her home.
She could feel the discomfort on her lips as if her lips were swollen as she tried to touch them with her fingers.
‘That beast!’
She walked dizzily to her own neighborhood. She really didn’t understand Nick. And so, she didn’t care about her rudeness last time.
Then she immediately thought, ‘No. He was the rude one.’
The truth was, she didn’t want to have anything to do with Nick Cage. All she wanted was to be able to work safely. But it seemed that fate was pinched by Nick, and she couldn’t do anything about it.
Kay had called before she got home. She said, “I heard you were sick. If you really are sick, then just have a good rest at home. There would be no deductions to your salary. ”
Veronica wondered, “Really?”
“Didn’t you know? There are two conditions wherein employees of the KING Group could take paid leaves. It’s either when they get sick or get married. ”
Veronica did not notice, but the treatment was still quite humane. She then said, “Thank you, I can go to work after two days off.”
“Two days off is a day off.”
Veronica smiled sheepishly and replied, “Oh, right. I forgot.”
“It’s okay to take a few more days off. Josephine will do your job anyway. You used to work for her, and now it’s time for her to repay you.”
Veronica was speechless as she thought, ‘This is really excellent. She can get paid while taking a break, which is very cool. I could go to work on Monday.’
Josephine saw her and asked, “Are you all right?”
“Yes. I’m fine.”
“Well, this afternoon’s meeting had been taken care of.”
Veronica said, “Thank you for covering for me.”
“What are you thanking me for? Now it’s your turn to help me next time. We have to help each other.”
Veronica was stunned and her expression froze for a moment. She thought, ‘Can she really give this kind of mutual help to others?’
That afternoon, Nick was in the conference room as the man in charge of the KING Group. For Veronica, it was unfathomable that he was not angry at her.
Kay was an exquisite special assistant. She did not just pay careful attention to him, but she did not forget to observe his words and expressions at the same time.
“The meeting is over,” Nick suddenly said as he got up and left.
The executives who were there couldn’t say anything and they all panicked.
It was as if they were asking among themselves, ‘Did we say something wrong?’
Veronica was also shocked. Today’s meeting time seemed to be particularly short as it only took less than an hour. They used to hold meetings for at least a few hours.
The executives left the conference room in a panic. Kay took the papers, went to Veronica, and said, “Next time, just take a seat. You don’t have to stand.”
“Okay.”
After Kay left, Veronica breathed a sigh of relief. The general meeting time used to be really long. She used to be able to move at the front desk, but now she can’t. Unless she did something.
Tours special assistant still had a conscience.
She didn’t have to stand anymore.
So when Kay, the secretary, asked her to make a cup of coffee and bring it to Nick’s office, she didn’t complain so much.
When she reached Nick’s office to deliver the coffee, she saw Nick was talking to the executives about the company. She respectfully put the coffee to the table and came out.
When she turned around the corner, she was shocked to see Toby leaning against the wall. He was waiting with his arms around his chest.
Veronica panicked and asked, “Why are you here?”
“So, you really are working for KING Group?” Toby scanned her left chest and saw her badge. He then said, “Secretary Department.”
Veronica replied, “What is it to you?” She then turned to leave.
Suddenly, Toby grabbed her by the wrist and pressed her against the wall.
“Ah! You. What are you doing? ”
Toby hissed at her, “It’s best not to shout too loudly, or others will know.”
Veronica really didn’t want anyone to know about her past relationship with Toby. So, she lowered her voice and told him, “Toby, what the hell are you doing? I have nothing to do with you anymore. So will you please leave me alone?”
“Why did you come to the KING Group? Is it because of me?”
Veronica couldn’t believe it and annoyingly said, “Are you out of your mind? What do you mean for you? Who do you think you are?”
Toby just looked at her. She could see the handsome face of Toby that was so close to her face. He sighed, “Veronica.”
Upon hearing this, Veronica was suddenly brought back to those memories of her being with Toby.
That was what Toby used to call her, ‘Veronica.’
Gentle and affectionate. As if in his eyes, she was the only woman in the world.
Veronica thought so simply about it back then, until she found out that Toby was kissing another woman.
Upon remembering this, Veronica pushed him away with all her might.
Toby was slightly stunned. He looked at her, his eyes were flashed with sharp luster, and then he sneered. ‘Did she just refuse me?’
He then hurriedly turned and left.
Meanwhile, Veronica suppressed the fluctuating emotions that welled up inside her. She didn’t understand why Toby was here.
‘What on earth was he here for?’
‘We broke up already. Why would he go and see me again and again? Did he come to humiliate me?’
‘I won’t give him the chance.’
If only she wasn’t worried about Nick finding out about her children, she would have put the little kids in front of him; one, two, three, four, five, six, and let him know how good she was.
Suddenly, her cell phone rang and she pulled it out immediately. The caller ID showed an unknown number.
She thought, ‘Who could it be?’
She answered, “Hello?”
