Chapter 162
Megan’s POV:
I gazed up at Chris, my eyes brimming with tears.
“Thank you for being here with me, despite everything,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Chris’s expression softened, and he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me close.
“It’s fine, Megan. I care about you, and I’m not going to abandon you when you need me most.” He says.
I felt a pang of guilt, knowing I didn’t deserve his kindness. I had betrayed his trust, shattered our relationship, and yet he still stood by me.
As we hugged, I noticed a woman approaching us from afar. She was pregnant, her belly swollen, and a bright smile on her face. My heart sank, and I felt a sudden chill run down my spine.
“Chris, who’s that?” I asked, trying to keep my tone neutral.
Chris followed my gaze, and his expression changed. He looked… guilty?
“Oh, that’s… uh… Maya,” he stammered.
Maya? I didn’t know any Maya.” I said and took a glance at him.
And why did Chris look so nervous?
As Maya approached, I noticed the way Chris’s eyes locked onto hers, the way his face lit up with a warm smile.
My heart raced, and I felt a wave of nausea wash over me.
“Hey, Chris!” Maya exclaimed, her voice bubbly.
“I was hoping to find you here.”
Chris hesitated, then stepped forward, embracing Sarah.
“Hey, Maya. What brings you here?” He asks.
“And my son?” He said smiling.
I stood frozen, feeling like an outsider in this intimate moment. Who was Maya and what did she mean to Chris?
Maya? I felt a surge of confusion. Why had Chris called her by a different name?
I was confused because she looked familiar.
Maya’s eyes sparkled as she hugged Chris, her pregnant belly pressing against him.
“I was hoping to find you here,” she said, her voice radiant.
I stood there, feeling like an intruder, as Chris and Maya exchanged warm smiles. It was clear they had a deep connection, one that went beyond friendship.
“Maya, this is Megan,” Chris said, finally acknowledging my presence.
Maya’s gaze turned to me, and her smile faltered for a moment.
Hi, Megan,” she said, her tone polite but reserved.
I forced a smile, trying to hide my growing unease. “Hi, Maya.”
The air was thick with tension as we stood there, the three of us, each lost in our own thoughts.
I couldn’t help but wonder what Chris’s relationship was with Maya, and why he had kept it a secret from me.
But then we we’re not together anymore.
Just as the awkwardness between us was becoming unbearable, a stern voice cut through the air.
“Megan, I need to talk to you.” She says.
I turned to see Chris’s mother, her eyes blazing with a fierce protectiveness.
“Mrs…” I said, trying to sound calm.
“You need to stay away from my son,” she said, her voice firm.
“He deserves better than someone who would betray his trust like you did.”
I felt a sting from her words, but I knew I had it coming. I had hurt Chris, and his mother had every right to be angry.
“Mrs. Thompson, please understand-” I began.
“No, Megan, I don’t want to hear it,” she interrupted.
“You’ve caused enough pain in our family. It’s time for you to leave.” She said.
Maya stepped forward, her eyes sympathetic.
“Mrs. … ehn maybe we should…” I stuttered.
“No, Maya, stay out of this,” Chris’s mother said, her voice firm.
“This is between Megan and me.” She says.
I felt a lump form in my throat as I realized I was being torn away from Chris once again. This time, it might be for good.
Mrs. Thompson’s eyes narrowed, her gaze piercing through me.
“You think you can just waltz back into Chris’s life after what you did? You broke his heart; Megan and he is just out of jail now… all because of you!” She continues.
“He was devastated. And now, you’re just going to show up and expect everything to go back to normal?” She says.
I felt a wave of shame wash over me. I knew I had hurt Chris, and I didn’t blame his mother for being angry.
“I understand why you’re upset,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
“But I’m trying to make things right. I care about Chris, and I want to prove it to him.” I say.
She snorted.
“You’ve had plenty of chances to prove it, Megan. And you blew it. Now, it’s time for you to leave.”
Maya stepped forward, her hand on Chris’s arm.
maybe we should talk about this later. We don’t want to upset Chris.” She say.
But she was unmoved.
“No, Maya. This needs to be said. Megan, you’re not good for Chris. You’re toxic. And I won’t let you hurt him again.” She says.
I felt tears prick at the corners of my eyes. I knew I didn’t deserve Chris’s forgiveness, but hearing his mother say it out loud made it harder to bear.
Chris stepped forward, his eyes flashing with anger. “Mom, stop. That’s enough.”
But she just turned to him. “Chris, don’t defend her. She’s not worth it.”
The air was thick with tension as we stood there, the silence between us heavy with unspoken words.
I stand alone, my eyes welling up with tears as I reflect on my actions. I’m consumed by the pain I’ve caused, the pain I’ve inflicted on myself. My mind races with thoughts of what could have been, what should have been.
His mother’s words cut deep, but it’s my own actions that haunt me. I should have been stronger, more confident.
I miss him, I miss us, I miss what we had. I miss the way he used to hold my hand, the way he used to make me laugh. I miss everything about him, and I don’t know how to get it back.
I wish I could turn back time, do things differently. But life doesn’t work that way. All I can do is learn from my mistakes, and hope that someday… someday I’ll get a second chance.
I feel like I’m drowning in my own sorrow, unable to escape the pain I’ve caused. I’m trapped in this sea of regret, and I don’t know how to find my way back to shore.
I think about all the what ifs, all the maybes. What if I had been stronger? Maybe he would still be here. What if I had fought harder? Maybe we would still be together.
But maybe is a cruel word, a reminder of what could have been. And now, all I’m left with is regret.
