Nicklaus’s POV
I waited for some time, hoping she would eventually wake up, but she remained asleep. I learned that she had been sleeping since I left last night. I became frustrated and headed to find Margaret. I had been with her earlier in the morning, and she hadn’t mentioned anything about this. Suspicion gnawed at me-could she be collaborating with my enemies now? Given the circumstances, I couldn’t afford to trust anyone. While my mate saw Margaret as a maternal figure due to her past assistance, witches were known to switch allegiances when war was afoot.
I searched Margaret’s room, finding it empty. I went to the location described by her apprentice and discovered her treating someone. My anger surged, and I confronted her, demanding answers. “What have you done to Gabriella?”
Anticipating my return, she responded calmly, “I knew you’d come back. But don’t worry, I would never harm her. She simply needed rest, and I prepared some herbs to aid her. She’ll be asleep for a few days.”
“Can I trust her, Lethal?” I sought my wolf’s insight.
“I believe so. She’s on our side, so we shouldn’t be overly concerned,” Lethal assured.
“We should be more concerned about Martins. This behavior is unlike him. Why don’t you try to mind-link with him?” Lethal suggested. I made the attempt, but it seemed that something was obstructing the connection. I couldn’t establish contact with my beta. Why was everything becoming so complicated? The moon goddess wasn’t favoring me this time.
I returned to learn that my daughter had come back. I didn’t want her to worry about her mother, so I was determined to keep things positive and ensure her happiness. “Daddy,” she exclaimed with excitement upon seeing me. She rushed to hug me, and I lifted her into my arms, spinning her around. “My adorable little one, how are you?”
“I’m fine, Dad. But do you know what’s wrong with Mother? I tried to wake her up, but she’s not responding,” she inquired.
“Don’t worry, sweetheart. Mommy is just resting, and she’ll wake up soon.”
“But I’ve never seen Mommy sleep at this hour before,” she astutely pointed out.
“Alright, Mommy will be sleeping for a few days. Now, let’s go to your room,” I suggested, hoping to distract her from her concerns.
She nodded, though her happiness seemed somewhat subdued. I attempted to lift her spirits by adopting a playful persona. “My name is Mr. Horse,” I announced with a touch of silliness. “Daddy, you’re so funny,” she giggled. I’d go to great lengths to bring a smile to her face.
I prepared dinner for us, and we shared a meal together. Despite my efforts, she remained visibly unhappy. Margaret informed me that she had been administering liquid food to Gabby. Yet, I couldn’t shake my unease.
Three days elapsed, and my mate remained in her slumber. With no word from my beta either, the situation grew more complicated by the day. I couldn’t leave the witches’ home while Gabby was still asleep. I needed to be by her side, ensuring her well-being before I set out to investigate what had befallen my beta.
I did my best to read a bedtime story to my daughter, aiming to help her relax. Though I’m not particularly skilled at this, I’m determined to keep trying as her father. I lay beside Gabby on the bed, and she turned toward me, holding me tightly while still wearing a smile. I gently touched her face, admiring her features, which made her laugh.
I wondered about the dream that was bringing her so much joy. How I wish I could share in that dream and experience the source of her happiness. All I ever wish for is peace among the packs, unadulterated happiness in our home. I envision our future-our marriage, our daughter growing into a confident woman who will eventually meet her mate. They’ll take on the mantle of leadership when the time is right, and I have full confidence in Estella’s potential to be an exemplary pack leader.
Regrettably, the current situation is worsening and shows no signs of abating. Nevertheless, I remain committed to keeping you and Estella safe, even if it means sacrificing my own life. I’m resolved to shield you both from any malevolent forces. I kissed her cheek and settled back into my position on the bed, closing my eyes. Perhaps, in her dreams, she’s thinking of me too. I can only hope.
I drifted off to sleep quickly and woke up the following morning, assuming that my mate would be awake as well. However, she was still sleeping. As per routine, I cleaned her up to ensure she remained presentable. I brushed her hair and changed her clothes, then went on to prepare breakfast for Estella. I knew Margaret would provide sustenance to keep Gabby’s body nourished.
“Good morning, Daddy. Is Mommy awake?” Estella queried, and I nodded in response.
“Dad, will something bad happen to me if Mommy doesn’t wake up?” She looked up at me with worry. I crouched down to her level, gently rubbing her hair. “Listen, sweetheart, nothing bad will happen to Mommy. When she wakes up, she’ll be eager to see you. Keep that in mind.”
She nodded, and I suggested breakfast, but she declined, claiming she had no appetite. It was unusual. I sincerely hoped that Gabby would wake up soon. It was already the fourth day, and I couldn’t fathom why she remained in her slumber. I did my best to uplift Estella’s spirits, and she eventually agreed to have breakfast. Still, she didn’t eat much, so I offered her some candies to lift her morale.
Estella left to meet her tutor, and I returned to her room to tidy it up, refusing to let any of the witch’s maids clean my daughter’s room due to my trust issues.
