Days quickly turned to a week since Danika became unconscious. Since then, there have been about four priests and one sorceress that has come to look her up and then they would dash out of her room with a shake of their heads and run off without providing me with any result.
Even the so-called great priest from the red moon pack. He was the worst. I heard a loud shout from the room and when I rushed in we collided at the door and without a word, he scampered out of the palace to the amazement of both of my mother that happened to be coming up the stairs as at the occasion.
Then the healer from the Apex howlers arrived today and I am more than hopeful that he doesn’t end up like the rest. Her Alpha told me that she is the best of all his healers in the sense that she is also a white witch. I showed her into the room and was outside the door with Paisley who as usual won’t stop festering around me like some goddamn fly.
Soon the door snapped open and I braced myself for the normal, but she walked out, nothing out of place nor did her face look anything like the others had looked.
“Can I speak to you alone, my King?” she asked with a distant look, one that was different from what I have seen for the past week.
I nodded and with a single look of warning at Paisley, not following me, I walked off downstairs to my study.
“I hope there’s no problem?” I asked her as if I didn’t know there was in the first place.
“It’s not something we can’t handle. I have good news as well as bad news. Which do you want first?”
“I don’t care the one you start with as far as none has to do with her dying.”
She shook her head with a cluck down her throat and sat down on the chair. “She is a very powerful woman. And her powers have lain dormant for too long. I think someone was taking it against her will some time ago, which scared away the power to hide deep within.”
I recall her vile sister with the dark powers. Maybe that was what she did to Danika. I haven’t really asked her much about her family so I can’t tell. I will have to ask her all these the minute she wakes up, the goddess willing. “So what’s the way forward?”
“The powers within her are battling for dominance. The dark powers of a whisperer a long time ago are rumored to possess witches that were cast off and sort the red moon by Azzuire! Someone among her ancestors must have taken an oath under the red moon for dark powers with a promise that one of their children would inherit it in her time. That is why she is in possession of it. Now, the powers sort to possess her completely and quash her wolf powers, as well as her goodness.” She looked down as if in thought.
I already knew the powers I encountered that day would be ominous, however, I didn’t expect it to be what I’m hearing. A whisperer? That is one of the powers that was used to scare us as pups into sleep. It was only in the history of our forefathers and one I still can’t believe someone in my time would be in possession of, not to mention my sweet Danika.
“What can we do now? What would happen to her?” I was frightened, I can’t lose her.
“Nothing would happen to her, great King. The only thing is that she would decide how she wants to use her powers. Only she can control it and it would require a great lot. The people that wanted to take her surely know what she carries and want to use it to their own advantage when they take her from here.” Her emerald sparkling eyes fixed on me boldly as if seeing deep into my soul; something I hated about witches.
“You gave to protect her, my King. I see there is a connection between you two… You can help her come back from wherever she is. She is lost and can’t find her way back.” She stood and walked to the door with her opaque black gown packed with her hands with an equally black bag hanging on one of her shoulders. She stopped and faced me. “Time ticks fast, my King. Make it count or you will lose her forever if those powers conquer her.”
“What do you want me to do?” I finally asked, letting go of my ego to ask my subject. I am confused more than I have ever been in my life.
“You know the truth, My King. You can’t suffer a sweet soul like that for too long. Her powers are rising every day and something our Kingdom would need in case doom lurks anytime. No matter what you do, remember that love conquers all fears.” Before I could ask her what she meant by that, the door smacked behind her.
I brushed my hand through my hair and exhaled loudly. I need a drink terribly. Whisperer? Of all the damn power to have, a whisperer? Danika is too much of a sweet girl to be a whisperer!
I went to the mini bar and was pouring myself a drink when the door swung open and my mother walked in.
“Mother, not now, I beg you. If -”
“What did she say?”
“Huh?” I croaked, cocking my brow as I shut the bottle, dropped it, and picked the reflector to sip from it.
“What did the healer say? Is she recovering anytime soon?”
“Yes, Mother. She said–” Would it be wise to share this with my mother when Danika herself hasn’t heard about it? The answer I think is no. I have to wait till she is aware of who she is before any other person. “… She said she would recover very soon and needs to be given adequate attention…” I dubbed. Well, partially, after all, the healer did say she would need me to show her that she is wanted here so as to bring her back.
“Okay, then what next?” She pulsed her lip, her blue eyes flashing at me. I could see the deep-seated hatred in them but I didn’t want to dwell on that, not now. So I shrugged nonchalantly.
“We wait.” I sat down, splaying my legs wide, hoping she got the message that I didn’t want her here and left.
Gratefully, it seemed today she is very receptive cuz she gave me a curt nod and made for the door. As the door yanked open, she halted and slowly faced me. I should have known better that she can’t be happy leaving like that.
“I will go to the mall now to do some shopping for the Luna ceremony… As it seems-”
“The Luna ceremony would wait, mother. Or, I think it is canceled!”
“Canceled? Are you out of your mind? Don’t you see this is why the enemy is attacking you? They know that you are alone without a mate and as such an easy target!”
“I am not without a mate!” I bit out sharply and wished it undone.
She narrowed her eyes at me, and stepped back into the room, the door opened slightly. “Excuse me? Have you found another mate I don’t know of?”
“I mean, I have Paisley by my side,” I quickly corrected.
Her shoulders relaxed as her eyes twitched. She bobbed her shoulders and tipped her chin up. “Very well. We are still on the same page. We need to conduct the ceremony fast so that the Vampires and any other creatures out there thinking they can use this opportunity of the approaching full moon to take us unaware, to think twice about it. Don’t forget her father has a good rapport with the Vampires which would help shoo them off our backs!”
“I don’t need to marry Paisley to get the Vampires off my back. I know what they are after and I can tell you that I have everything under control.” I stood from my chair, picked my jacket on the chair, and went to her, meaning to leave the room, but she blocked me.
“You better know what you are doing, son! I will not sit down and watch you destroy everything I built out of this Kingdom with your father because of his foolishness!” Our eyes clashed for some second, then like the wind, she disappeared out of the room, a sudden relief engulfing me.
“I will live yet another day!” I flexed my shoulders to release tenseness and matched after her down the hall, and up the stairs.
When I got to her room, she still looked at ease on the bed. I made sure the door was locked and went to lay down beside her. I took her in my arms and cuddled her to me. I don’t care what tomorrow brings, as long as we are like this. I know there is hope.
