Ethan
I glanced up at Rudolph as the door opened. I wished I could have joined the battle but Ava had become so sick that I couldn’t leave her alone. Pregnancy was always hard on vampires and I already concluded that I wasn’t getting her pregnant again no matter how beautiful she looked.
Her fever had gone down and she was sleeping peacefully but my own heart wasn’t at peace. What was going on on the battlefield? What had happened? How many men had the other king brought with him? Who was winning? Were we the one? How was it? How tough was the war? Who had dared to want my wife? I almost ran myself crazy with questions as I sat there in the room, tending over Ava and torturing myself with imagination of what was going on at the battlefield.
I breathed a sigh of relief as Rudolph walked in. That had to mean the war was over and the enemies had fled to their land. He wouldn’t have been here otherwise but his blank expression wasn’t helping.
The war was over but had we lost? Was he sad because we had? Was he here to tell me to get my heart prepared before the other vampires dash into the bedroom to kill me or worse, take me as a captive of war?
“Tell me something, Rudolph.” U growled at him. “Don’t just sit there.”
His lips began to move in a slow smile and i could feel my heart start beating right. We hadn’t lost the war. Rudolph wouldn’t have smiled at me if that was the case.
“You bastard! Why didn’t you say something when you got in? You had me scared for moments.”
He grinned. “That was exactly what I wanted. I wanted you to feel the adrenaline you missed on the field and should have felt while fighting.”
“You know I wanted to fight with you.” I sighed.
“I know but I’m glad that you didn’t.”
“Why?”
He told me of what he said to the other king and his response, and I couldn’t stop laughing. That served him right.
“Who is the idiot? The one who dared to want my wife?” I asked, glancing at her. I was glad that we were both safe.
“Anthony.”
I growled. The bastard. “Thanks for fighting and winning.”
“You are welcome, your majesty. I’m surprised he didn’t come with more men though. I thought he had a larger army.” He frowned.
“I thought so too.” I shrugged. I didn’t know why he didn’t come with his large army and neither did I care to find out. All I cared about was that we had won the war, my mate and my people were safe.
“How is Ava?” Rudolph asked, staring at her.
“She is fine, finally sleeping.”
Rudolph sighed. “I can imagine how you felt when you were treating her. I remember how scared I was when my sister was pregnant. I guess you had your adrenaline rush after all.”
I shook my head and chuckled. “You have no idea.”
“I’m glad she is fine now.”
“The first trimester is always the hardest and riskiest. Once she is past that, everyone would be at peace.”
“Yes. I don’t know why our females always have to suffer during pregnancy. It has always been like that.”
“I heard they are still looking for an answer in the lab. I had a meeting with the head of scientific research last night.”
He snorted. “How could they find a breakthrough when our blood coagulate the same minute they draw it?”
“They are trying to find a cure to that, I heard. They want to find a way to stop our blood from coagulating and remaining in liquid form so they would be able to work on it.”
“That might take them years to solve.”
“Fortunately, we have the gift of living for many years.”
“Yes, we do. And I also hope of them getting a cure soon. I don’t want to watch my mate sick when she is pregnant.”
I wagged my eyebrows at him. “Thinking of a mate already? Who is the lucky girl?”
He looked away. “I never said I was thinking of a mate. I just said I didn’t want my mate to be in discomfort when she is pregnant as the other females do.”
I chuckled. “Hear yourself. You never said something like that before and now you said it. How am I not to think of what you say as you ready to be mated? I think you have found her already.”
“You shouldn’t think of anything else asides what concerns the people, your majesty.” He snorted.
“Which is what I’m doing. You are one of my people and I believe this conversation is what concerns you.”
He chuckled and shook his head. “You are impossible, my lord.”
“I think it’s Bianca you like.” I said, pushing him further. “I used to see you with her.”
“Bianca?” He snorted. “We only use to meet by coincidence and talk. What are you talking about, Ethan?”
“I’ve seen you talking with her on four different occasions.” I wagged my eyebrows at him.
“And they were nothing but coincidence. The meetings were never planned.” He insisted.
“Coincidence can turn to fate. She could be your mate.”
He snorted. “It seems you are in the mood to tease the hell out of me but I’m not ready for that. I will see you later, your majesty. Extend my regards to the queen when she wakes up.” He stood up and bowed slightly.
“What about the men?”
“They are fine, your highness. Some of them are receiving treatment for their wounds so they can heal quickly but I believe they would be fine soon.”
“How about a party to celebrate when everyone is fine?”
“Sounds cool.”
I nodded and smiled as I watched him walk out of the room.
