Mia
Quinn had to be joking. How did he expect me to sleep when they were locked up and far away from me? He had to think that I was inhuman and hated them. I scowled as I remembered that I hadn’t exactly done anything to change his perspective that I hated them.
We had dinner but we were all distracted as we ate. There was no word at all through the meal. Everyone was obviously busy with their thoughts. The boys were worried still about the impending shift tonight after finding a place that they could lock themselves up in. They were natural worriers and I was shocked to find that out. It was unbelievable to find out that the boys who were strong as that and didn’t fear anything could be victims of chronic worry. It was indeed a strange world.
The cellar door was iron and there was no way they could tell me that they were worried they might break it down. I doubted that they would even if they rammed all their bodies into it at the same time. They just wanted to worry to keep themselves busy.
I snorted at them. Their moods made it impossible for me to talk as well. The last time I felt this uncomfortable at a table was when I realized that everyone in the house knew that I had slept with Quinn.
I couldn’t deny that I was afraid as well. I couldn’t stop wondering if it was going to be my last night on earth. I shrugged my fear off. I couldn’t die. I just had to lock the door and keep myself away from them as Quinn has said.
“It’s time.” Quinn jumped to his feet as soon as we were done with dinner.
I followed them and watched as they looped chains into the hooks in the wall and tied themselves up so tight with it that I pitied them. Even an animal wasn’t tied up that way. My subconscious reminded me that they were going to be animals pretty soon but at the moment, I couldn’t bear to think of them as that.
“Are you sure you want it that tight? What if it leaves scars?”
Jack snorted. “It’s not tight enough, Mia.” He pulled the chains around his wrist, clamping it tighter as if to prove his point. “We can’t have scars. The chains are not silver.”
“You can leave now.” Quinn said to me. “The full moon will soon be out.”
They were all done chaining themselves to the wall and sat, waiting to shift and lose their sanity. I was scared for them. They had to be afraid as well. What was about to happen was an experience they had never had before.
“Mia!” Quinn called my name again when I stood there without moving and only stared at them.
I blinked, snapping back to the present. “Um, let me stay here with you for a while.”
“No, leave.” John said. “Don’t forget to lock the door behind you.”
I nodded and with a sigh, I walked out of the cellar, my feet moving slowly as they took me to where my bedroom was. I had been so used to sharing the space with them that I wondered how I was going to feel comfortable with sleeping alone out here.
This night was going to be harder than I thought. I couldn’t deal with it. I couldn’t sleep. As much as I tried to, I just couldn’t find the rest I needed. Quinn had told me to sleep in the next one hour and I guessed that was when they would shift. He didn’t want me to know of what happened to them the night of a full moon.
I had seen them shift and it was not a big deal but I guessed it was different on the night of the full moon. That was definitely why they had that dungeon in the house. Coupled with the curse of the dark wizard, it must be a painful ordeal for them this night.
How was I to sleep when I knew all that? My phone and power bank were dead and I had nothing to keep myself busy. I began to sing rhymes in my head.
Suddenly, I heard screams and growls from the cellar and jumped up to my feet. It was happening. I ran towards the cellar. I stopped, remembering what he had said to me. I shouldn’t come near them.
I snorted and continued running to the cellar. How could I hear them in pain and not do anything? Would they have done the same if they were in my shoes?
I got to the door and thought of what I was doing. Was I making the right choice? I was scared. What if the boys had broken their chains and were ripping at one another? They were worried of seeing my dead body when they shifted to humans but at the moment, I was afraid of seeing them dead tomorrow.
My subconscious sneered at me. What was I going to do if I barged in and they were trying to kill one another? I exhaled, my determination to save them soaring high. If they had lost their humanity and were tearing at one another, then being cooped up in that room wasn’t going to help them.
I decided that if I opened the door, they would run outside and disperse to various directions. They wouldn’t have to kill one another like they would if they were trapped in there.
I knew that they would hate finding out that they had killed one another more than they would hate finding out that they had killed me. I was their mate, they could always pick another woman but another brother wasn’t so easily replaced. I knew whichever one of them who survived the night would hate being the one to kill his brothers and I didn’t think I wanted to live with that or someone with that much grief. I doubted that I would be able to live with myself if they become dead.
I would forever hate myself for this night and blame myself for not making the right decision.
I decided to open the door and let them go. My heart screamed in my ears as I placed my hand on the lock. What if I was the one who died? I hoped not. I was afraid. I hoped that they would run for the door instead of chewing me up.
After some minutes of indecision, I made up my mind. If I had to die to save the boys, then it was worth it. I almost swooned as I pulled back the lock, my fear ringing in my head. I wondered if this was how the martyrs felt when they had to die for someone else.
I opened the door and moved inside, wincing at how loud their growls were now that I was inside. I scanned the room and breathed out in relief when I saw that they were still chained. Oh goodness, I had let my imagination get the best of me.
The boys growled louder when they saw me, frantic and trying to break out from their chains and get to me. I stepped back in fear, holding on to the wall. I was glad that the room was wide and long. There was no how the boys reached forward, barking at me, they couldn’t get to where I was except they broke out from the chains.
My eyes strayed to the chains and I was glad that it was strong as they had said. I shouldn’t have been worried about them. I shouldn’t have come here but I didn’t regret coming here. Now that I saw that they were fine, I was meant to go back upstairs but I didn’t want to. I was going to stay here with them, hoping that the chains didn’t snap. Staying here was better than being upstairs alone, unable to sleep and worrying myself to death.
They howled at me, their eyes filled with insanity and a lust for blood that shook me to the core. The dark wizard had really messed up with their humanity. They had changed into wolves in my presence and I could still tell them apart and knew that they were in there. They always used to look at me the way they used to in their human forms but it was different now. They had no emotion in their eyes and were no different from normal wolves in the forest.
I snorted. Even normal wolves weren’t as crazy as they were at the moment.
I glued to the wall, feeling safe and ignored their howls. I wondered if I could reach out to their humanity and started singing.
They continued growling at me but I could hear their growls dwindling and saw them calming down. Eventually, they went silent and stared at me as I continued singing.
I felt proud of myself when I saw them squatting gently on the ground. I could totally understand how beauty had felt when she had saved the beast because that was how I felt.
