Mia
“What do you mean by you are resigning?” Sean looked at me as if I was speaking a different language that he didn’t understand.
I gulped. I had known that this was going to be hard. Even if I wanted to resign, I was meant to have given him a notice prior to this moment.
“I’m sorry, sir.”
“Sorry?” He scowled at me. “That doesn’t cut it. You would like to quit your job in a week and you are just telling me. Who does that? You are one of my best employees and you want to leave suddenly like this, without giving me time to find a replacement for you.”
“I’m sorry, Sean.”
He glared at me. “Don’t say those words again, Mia. You are getting me infuriated.”
I sighed, holding my breath and pursed my lips as I looked at him. I hated the position that I was in as well but I had to do it. Albert had called me this morning to remind me to submit my resignation letter when I got to the office as if he feared that I wasn’t going to do that.
I had given him my word that I was going to resign. Even if Albert hadn’t called to remind me, I wasn’t going to change my mind. Instead of dreaming about Quinn or any of the other boys as I used to, I had seen the dark wizard in my dream.
He had come in a different form but I knew at once that he was the one. He charged at me, running towards me with a sinister laugh coming out of his throat. I had been frozen with fear and couldn’t move except to scream. I wondered if he had controlled my legs in the dream and prevented me from running. I woke up screaming for help and sat up in alarm on my bed. It had been a relief when I had found out that it was all a dream and I was safe in my bedroom.
I had decided then at that moment that I was resigning and going back home. I believed the wolves that the dark wizard had his eyes on me and I didn’t want to die.
Albert hadn’t needed to call. I already had my mind made up.
Sean sighed, drawing me back to the present. “Why are you resigning? Don’t you like it here?”
His eyes were filled with so much sadness that I knew he wasn’t willing to let me go. If my life wasn’t on the line, I would have been touched by his emotions and told him that I wasn’t going anymore.
“I love it here.” I could at least tell him that and erase the sadness in his eyes.
He smiled at me, his eyes warming up at my words. “Why then do you want to leave?”
I sighed. “It’s a family emergency. It wasn’t expected at all which is why I am turning my resignation in so late.”
He sighed. “I don’t have anything to say to that. Hope it’s not too serious?”
“Not too serious but it could be if we don’t work on it.”
Sean didn’t need to know the details. That was enough for him.
He nodded. “You can go. You will get your pay before the end of the week.”
I smiled. “Thank you so much, Sean.”
I hadn’t been expecting him to pay me after the inconvenience I had caused him. I was already willing to let go of my salary to make up for the stress I would be causing him.
He nodded. “Take care of yourself.”
“I will.” I said, stood up from the chair and left the office.
I walked back to my office, looking at everywhere I passed, knowing that was the last view I was going to have of it except I came back on a visit which wasn’t likely.
I didn’t know how long the fight with the dark wizard was going to take and I wasn’t going to be let out until it was over and he was defeated.
It was highly possible that the office would have changed before I was allowed back into society. This was my last view of it as it was.
I got back to my desk and got busy with packing. My eyes stayed on the frame on my desk as I picked it up. It was a picture of me and mum on my graduation day from college. I missed her but I was glad she was safe. She was doing well at her family house that she went to. I couldn’t wait to see her again and hoped that this fight got resolved on time. I couldn’t wait to see the end of the dark wizard.
I dropped the frame in a box and began to empty my drawers.
“Hey, Mia.” Sammy smiled as he saw me. His smile froze on his face as he saw what I was doing. “Why are you packing your stuff? Did Sean fire you?”
“No. I resigned.”
His voice echoed the shock in his eyes. “You did? I thought you loved it here.”
“I do.”
“Why? You got a better offer?”
“No, I’m going home.”
He frowned, looking worried. “Are you sick? Are you leaving to take care of your health?”
I was leaving to protect my life. I wondered how Sammy always did it. He always came close to the truth without realizing it.
“No.” I shook my head. “That wasn’t it.”
He sighed. “As long as you are okay, I’m fine.”
“Thank you, Sammy.”
“Have you told Gerald?”
“No, I just left Sean’s office. I wanted to finish packing before finding the two of you. I knew you would be like this and wouldn’t let me pack if I had told you.”
He chuckled. “You got that right.”
“When are you leaving? Now?”
“No. I will stay till closing time. I can’t leave Sean stranded knowing there is no one yet to do my job. I’m sure he would have found a plan to re-strategize the operations of the company before tomorrow.”
“I’m sure he would.” He said, moving closer. “Let’s pack together.”
“No, you should get back to work, Sammy. I have no doubt that Sean is in a bad mood. I don’t want him to lash out on you if he comes out and doesn’t meet you at your desk.”
He chuckled. “You are right about that. Let me get back to work.”
“Please do.”
“I will see you later.” He said.
“Of course, you will. I’m staying for lunch.”
He chuckled. “You owe me a goodbye hug.”
I smiled. “No problem. You can have as many hugs as you want, Sammy.”
“I will hold you to that.” He chuckled and left, leaving me to sort my belongings out.
