I sighed. When we had asked for a leave, this wasn’t how I envisioned it. I had never imagined that my father would have been fighting with any of my brothers.
Dad had always been strict on us but I couldn’t remember him ever picking a grudge with us. It had been two days since we had all found out that Quinn and Mia had slept together and dad had been angry since then. He hadn’t spoken a word to Quinn and didn’t even answer his greetings. He ignored us as well and I knew that was because Quinn had confessed to him how we all felt about Mia.
I felt pity for dad. It must be hard on him. He must be finding it hard to accept that his step-daughter would have to be his daughter-in-law. It was indeed a bitter pill to swallow but he would have to forgive us eventually. I couldn’t wait for that day to come, when we would all talk about this and put it behind us.
The heart always chose who it wanted to love and he had known that the three of us always liked the same thing right from birth. He had been told when we were born that we would have the same mate. He had hoped that we would never have found about that prophecy but we had when mum had died. The dark wizard had killed her and taunted dad about the twisted fate of his sons and that was how we found out about the prophecy.
Even if the dark wizard hadn’t told us about it, we would have found out in our own way. It was weird that we grew up liking the same thing and being in tune with one another.
We were strong wolves but couldn’t bear to be apart from one another. We had to stick together. We had almost died when we were young and an aunt had taken Jack with her for a holiday.
Jack had fallen sick and the two of us left at home were no better off. Our aunt had been confused at the sight of a sick wolf and didn’t know what to do. She had tried to treat him but he didn’t get better. It wasn’t until she brought him home that she realized that me and Quinn were sick as well. It was when the three of us got back together that we became well and no one had ever tried to separate us again.
We couldn’t live far from one another nor have different mates. We had found it hard to believe when we had heard it, knowing no woman in her right mind would agree to be with us.
It wasn’t until we all fell for Mia at the same time that we knew we really had a twisted fate. We knew that it would take Mia years to accept that and were willing to be patient with her, till she accepted us the way we were.
It hadn’t been easy for us to accept that we would have to share our mate. I couldn’t blame dad for finding it hard to accept that Mia was our mate. I knew he liked her as a daughter and didn’t want her to have to deal with the complications of being mated to three werewolves.
I suspected that he hoped we would choose to mate with a female werewolf of the pack.
He would have suggested that to us but Quinn had made everything complicated by marking Mia. It was no wonder that dad was pissed at him. I knew why dad was angry at us the most. He was afraid that his secret would be out. He had probably hoped to keep the fact that he was a werewolf away from Veronica. There would be no way to avoid that if we all claimed Mia.
At that moment, I felt pity for dad. It was weird enough explaining to Veronica that he was a werewolf, now he would have to tell her that his daughter was to be mated to his sons and probably be the Luna of the pack.
He had the right to be mad at us. He, no doubt, wanted to take his secret to the grave. Now, we were forcing it out of his throat.
It was always awkward at mealtimes, with the four of us pretending to be fine for Veronica’s sake.
It was a cruel hand that fate dealt us when we realized that our prospective mate hated us for what we had done to her in the past, when we didn’t know better. We wanted her around us even then as twisted as we were and that was why we had done what we did.
We had known that Mia would think those were excuses and our wait for our mate to accept us just got extended. We were prepared to wait even though it wasn’t easy.
I couldn’t deny that I itched to have and mark her anytime I saw her. Knowing that Quinn already did made it harder on the two of us and that was why my head was banging at the moment as I listened to Quinn and Jack bickering at each other.
I sighed again and I couldn’t count how much I had done so this afternoon. We really had a twisted fate. I wondered how the three of us were going to stay mated to one woman without killing one another. Wolves were known to be possessive and Jack was a living example of that at the moment.
Maybe that was our destiny, that the three of us would end up killing one another and our mate would be the reason we did.
If that was the case, then Mia didn’t have to worry for too long as she would soon be free of us and get to go back to our normal lives.
“Can the two of you please stop for a second?” I snapped at them, rubbing at my aching temples.
“Tell him that.” Quinn sighed and pointed at Jack.
Jack snorted. “How do you act like you are fine with what is happening?” He glared at me.
I snorted. “I’m not fine with any of it but fighting with my brothers wouldn’t solve anything. It’s not going to make Mia like me and I know that is what you want. That is why you are mad at Quinn. Isn’t it bad already that dad wouldn’t speak to us? Do we have to fight among ourselves too?”
Jack sighed. “I feel uncomfortable knowing that Quinn marked her and she doesn’t want anything to do with me. Telling her that she couldn’t have Quinn alone isn’t changing her mind either.”
I sighed. “You really need to stop telling her that.” What would he do if he was in my shoes? I hadn’t even made any advances to her.
“Why Quinn and not us? It gets me curious and mad. It’s not even like he tries to charm her. He mostly ignores her and stays on his own. I can’t believe she fell for him first.” He glanced at Quinn. “No offense to you, brother.”
Quinn shrugged. “It is what it is.”
“How did you do it?” Jack asked.
“I did nothing.” Quinn replied. From his tone, I could tell that he was tired of the conversation. That was what Jack had been asking him for days. No wonder he flared up today and the two of them got into a row.
“Now this is what I don’t like. This isn’t the time to be tight-lipped.” Jack hissed. “You know how frustrating it is to like someone who doesn’t like you despite how hard you try to win her over? Do you feel confident that she likes you because the two of you have been together?”
Quinn shook his head. “Get a grip, Jack. This is not the time to get angry. She doesn’t like me. Would she have avoided me if she did? For all I know, she might have convinced herself that night never happened so stop getting mad at me, thinking that I have what you want. We all don’t have what we want yet.”
Jack blew out air and ran his hand through hair. I was glad that he had calmed down. I had been afraid that the two of them would get worked up, shift into wolves and get physical.
“Try to get her to like you instead of telling her she has no choice but to, Jack.” I felt I needed to say that. “Your arrogance doesn’t work here, brother. You would have to let go of it. You know how Mia is.”
I saw dad walking towards us. He beckoned to us with his hand and shouted.
“Come over here, boys. I need to have a word with you.”
We all moved forward without hesitation, grateful that he had finally decided to talk to us. There was no doubt that we were about to have the longest meeting we had ever had with dad for there was no how he could get out all he felt in a word.
That would be one hell of a word if he did.
