Quinn
We were back at work but we weren’t going to stay for long. We were just here to get approval to be absent from work for a while. We had already written and sent a letter to our superior and I didn’t think that we were going to be denied.
The man was dad’s friend and even though he wasn’t a werewolf like we were, he knew about our world and knew that we wouldn’t have asked to be excused for reasons that were not good.
We were here to ask for permission to leave officially and also tidy up some loose ends before we leave on a holiday that we had no idea of when it was going to end.
It would be a mess if the others didn’t see us come back and we just left without a formal record of our request for an extension of leave. The other officers would be angry and hate that we were getting preferential treatment.
Our boss wouldn’t like that and I didn’t like that either. I hated it when others underestimated my powers and thought I was just lucky.
The major looked at the three of us standing in his office, his eyes going over the letter we had written for official submission.
He glanced up at us, dropping the letter on his table. “You want to leave for personal reasons.”
“Yes, sir.” I replied.
“Is that all?” He said, arching his eyebrows.
He knew of our world but I didn’t think I wanted to tell him of the dark wizard. He had only known of dad’s identity then because he had helped him one day when he was injured on the field and was shocked when his wounds had healed quickly.
Dad had told him what he was and surprisingly, he hadn’t hunted him. Uncomfortable that someone had found out about him – even though he wasn’t going to hurt him – dad had retired earlier than he was meant to.
“Yes. For personal reasons.”
“Is Albert fine?”
“Yes.”
He arched his eyebrows at me, not believing me and I knew I had to get him something else.
“It has to do with the pack.”
He sighed. “You can leave but come back anytime you are free to.”
“Thank you, sir.”
He nodded. “I will find a way to deal with this.”
“Thank you, sir.” I nodded again, grateful that he didn’t ask us too many questions.
My brothers and I all stood in formation and we saluted him. He nodded and waved us out of his office.
We were quiet as we walked and I knew my brothers felt the same way I felt. It was only when we were on the field that we truly felt alive, the other thing that could beat that was when we were with Mia.
Mia wasn’t taking a leave like we did so she wouldn’t be around us everytime. We just excused ourselves from our jobs and signed an indefinite contract of boredom and restlessness in the process.
I couldn’t wait for us to find the blasted dark wizard so we could go back to our lives. I couldn’t help but wonder if he was really worth it that we would have to leave our work for him.
I snorted. Who was I kidding? I knew how volatile the dark wizard was. We had to be ready on time to catch him and not be stuck on one mission when he acted. I only hoped that we didn’t lose our sanity from boredom before we knew where he was.
John glanced at me. “What next?”
I sighed. I didn’t know as myself. Maybe I should let my brothers get familiar with the boredom that they were about to become friends. The earlier we get exposed to it, the better adapted to it we would be.
“Should we go back home?” I offered.
Jack snorted. “Why would I want to go home now? Being at home without nothing to do drives me crazy.”
John nodded, seconding his opinion. “He is right, Quinn. We can’t keep sleeping or pressing our phones.”
“We can watch TV.” I said with sarcasm. I couldn’t remember the last time we were all calm enough to sir before a screen.
“Ugh!” Jack pretended to be disgusted. “And watch dad and Vanessa act like lovebirds in the living room while pretending to watch the movie that they aren’t really watching.”
“That is because they are lovebirds.” I chuckled.
My brothers glanced up at me, looking like they wanted to chew me. Firstly, they were surprised that I had chuckled when I had told them that I was in a foul state. Secondly, my words had definitely made them smile. I had told them that they were being ridiculous for hating that dad and his newly wedded wife were behaving like lovebirds. I had told them to suck it up while I was the one to always leave the room when dad and Vanessa start to dote on each other.
It was like telling them to deal with the pain that I couldn’t deal with. That was surprising to them because I hardly showed double standards and they knew I was messing with them. That was why they wanted to eat me up and I didn’t feel any guilty for saying that to them.
I wanted to break the ice and I was glad that I had done that. They seemed angry at me but it was better than the bored expressions that we all wore.
“You can’t be serious.” Jack laughed.
“What if I was?”
“Where should we go?” John asked me again.
“Why should I know?”
Jack snorted. “Because we are out if ideas and you are always brimming with some.” He chuckled.
I smiled, glad that he didn’t say because I was the leader. I knew that but at this moment, I didn’t want the pressure.
We were about leaving the camp when we walked into one of the men we were in the same unit with.
“Hey, Trip.” He called out to us, his short form of calling all of us at the same time.
“Marcus,” we called back to us.
“How are you doing?”
“Feeling great.” Jack replied.
He moved closer. “Are you back?”
“No. Not really.”
He sighed and I wondered why he looked so downcast that we weren’t back to work. We tried our best to not make enemies but we didn’t think that we were the type of guys that everyone would miss.
We mostly kept to ourselves and with our superior strength, we were always at the lead in training sessions and on the field. It was easy to make the others envious and we didn’t want any fracas with anyone.
Dad was going to punish us if he heard any awful reports about us from work. I shuddered at the thought of being chained to a cave and left bare till dad believed that we had learnt our lesson and would learn to control our emotions.
“Is there a reason you look bad?” John asked him.
“Not really. We just missed you.”
We nodded and let him be on his way. Another officer joined him and we could hear their conversation with our superior abilities.
Apparently, he had made a bet with another officer that we wouldn’t be able to beat him when we came back because we hadn’t been training much and the other one had.
I scoffed at the words. I wished I could tell the other officer to stop disturbing himself and let go of his arrogance. There was no way he could beat us even if we didn’t train for years.
“Seems like it’s a good time we took the extended leave.” John chuckled as we walked away.
“I should blow the dark wizard a kiss if I see him then.” Jack teased.
“I don’t know you now have a thing for guys.” I teased him.
“Ew.” John chuckled.
Jack snorted. “Even if I turn gay, I want to be sure of the guy I’m with. I don’t want to be in bed with a guy who could suddenly change into a woman under me.”
We all laughed. “Should we go for drinks?” I suggested even though it was still early in the morning but there was nothing else we could do if we didn’t want to go home.
“Call.” My other two brothers agreed with me.
