Mia
“We actually made some background checks on you, Mia.” John revealed.
What? I turned in my seat to stare at him. What was he saying? Was he serious? He nodded, laughing at the look on my face.
“We knew you weren’t going to say anything about your job if we asked. That was just us trying to confirm what we already knew.”
“Did you make a bet on that?” I snorted at him, facing forward.
I glanced at Quinn and scowled. He had his eyes on the road as if he wasn’t concerned with the conversation going on in the car but he had an amused smirk on his lips. It would be hard for me not to notice that. He was in with his brothers and I scowled harder as I folded my hands on my chest and stared at the road ahead, trying to calculate how far we were to the city.
I was already tired of them and I made sure that they knew it.
John laughed, his body betraying his amusement as if he knew that I was acting out and throwing tantrums. “What is the point of placing a bet when we all knew what you would do? We all know that you wouldn’t talk to us even if we have to force the words out of your mouth.”
I snorted. “I thought you went on a difficult mission. How difficult could it be if you still had time to run a background check on your sister? The mission you were on certainly wasn’t hard.”
He chuckled. “At least, it is not like yours.”
I turned to the back to face him and narrowed my eyes at him. “What about my job?”
“It is both tiresome and dull.” He replied, rather too fast as if he had been waiting for an opening, like he had been waiting to say that to me.
I gasped at his words. How could he? How dare he say that to me like he was the one working in my place? What did he think that he knew?
He had no right to call my job dull because he didn’t like it. I ignored him and turned to the front. I wasn’t going to give him a response. If I didn’t respond to him, he would know how to keep quiet.
I hissed. Those arrogant boys.
They thought they could control anything and anyone’s lives or give their unwanted opinions to everyone.
John obviously wasn’t done because he said something else. “You should quit and stay at home, or perhaps travel around like other families enjoying your pretty life. Let’s provide for you, little princess.”
I was stunned. Never have I felt so uncomfortable by someone’s suggestion but I was with this. How could he see me and think that I was going to accept being a dependent pretty little thing on anyone, much less them?
He had to be kidding. I looked at the rest of them to know if he was echoing their thoughts because I know they all think alike and sighed, rolling my eyes at the look on their faces.
They were thinking of the same thing. Jack nodded and winked at me when I glanced at him to show me that he was fully behind what his brother had said. Quinn had no expression on his face and busied himself with driving. There was a way I knew if he was cool with what his brothers said or not. He always had a scowl on his face if he was annoyed at what they said or told them to keep quiet.
He didn’t have a scowl on his face at this moment and neither did he tell them to keep quiet.
I hissed low at them. Were they kidding me?
They hadn’t been around for six months and I wondered what had made them change so much.
The car eventually stopped in front of the company dormitory building, an apartment where all the employees were meant to stay. There was a project in the company which would start in the next two weeks.
It would be an intense project which might be stressful for everyone and that was why the company made the arrangement that we all stay here and not have to disturb ourselves going home after work and coming back everytime. We would all be here till the project was done.
Thinking of the stress that the managing director had said that we would have to go through, I was reminded of what John had said and I felt annoyed all over again.
How dare he?
I blew out a sigh of relief that we were finally done with the ride and also happy that they drove me here and not to my house. I didn’t think I wanted them to know the house I had grown up in and lived in.
I didn’t think I wanted them to know where exactly I was going to live in here as well. I hesitated to get out of the car and watched with dismay as the brothers took my luggage out of the car and opened the door for me.
I had to step out of the car after they had done that. A crowd was outside and I would be causing an unnecessary scene I wouldn’t like by refusing to step out of the car.
After I got out of the car, I noticed how several women in front of the apartment cast admiring glances at me. I sighed, knowing why they were doing that and felt like the triplets were being over-hyped. The ladies were only going to give them an ego boost with the way they were looking at them as if they would love to drag them to their bedrooms at that moment.
I saw the smug smile on the faces of the brothers and rolled my eyes. They were arrogant already and didn’t need to be encouraged.
When we got to the door, I turned to them. I wasn’t going to let them into my bedroom. That they were even at the door was more than I could stand for.
“You have to leave now. Thank you.”
They arched their eyebrows at me. “Really?”
“Yes.” I nodded at them. I wasn’t going to be intimidated. “You have to leave as fast as you can.” I said, hurrying them away with a swing of my hands.
Jack leaned forward, trying to peer over my head into the bedroom. “Is there something you are hiding in there?”
I scoffed. “I don’t think that is any of your business.”
Quinn nodded. “Fine but we will go now on only one condition.”
“What is that?” I asked, knowing that they wouldn’t leave if I didn’t hear them out. They were as stubborn and manipulative as that.
“There is a gathering in the two days and we would love you to join us.”
I wanted to refuse. Who knew what they were going to do to me this time? I hadn’t even recovered from what happened at the last party I went with them to.
I glanced at them and my heart softened at the hopeful expressions on their faces. I realized that they were truly sorry for what had happened and trying their best to make it up to me.
“I will consider it.” I agreed.
After the brothers left, I entered the apartment. My roommate, Sasha, sat on the living room sofa and smiled at me as I walked in.
“Welcome.” She grinned at me. “You are a lucky girl. It must feel good to be escorted to work by three handsome men.” She teased me.
I blushed. “They are my stepbrothers.” I couldn’t believe that I was explaining that but I had to.
“Is living with those charming stepbrothers of yours fun?” She asked, playfully.
I shook my head with a sigh and I was glad that she understood what I meant to say.
She chuckled. “I guess it’s not that much fun.”
“It isn’t.” I laughed.
We laughed and chatted, sharing how our holidays went. I knew Sasha was human and I never could tell her about werewolves and the Dark Wizard.
I sighed as we stopped talking and bid each other a good night, wishing there was someone I could talk to about the mystery in my life. I couldn’t tell my mum and I couldn’t tell my friends. I felt alone in the world, even though I knew the brothers would never agree to that.
