Mia
We got outside and I asked Quinn to let go of me but he wouldn’t respond. The brothers kept on walking, teasing one another and I eventually gave up when I realized that they meant to get me to my room.
I felt uncomfortable but oddly at peace in their presence and in Quinn’s arms. I must have been shaken by that woman more than I thought. Who wouldn’t? I would be inhuman to not have been shaken. That was a near-death experience. I realized that I still didn’t know who she was except what Quinn had called her.
A sorceress?
That was odd. I didn’t even want to believe that werewolves existed and now, there were sorceresses. How many inhumane characters were walking on the surface of the earth?
Quinn seemed to know her well – and hated her too – and I was determined to find out the truth from them. That was better than trying to get the truth from Albert without giving myself away that I had gone to the cave.
“You don’t have to do this.” I told him, trying to hold on to the little of my pride I had when he wanted to get me to my bedroom.
He didn’t reply and I sighed as he made his way to my door.
The boys were all with me and I looked back at them. I sighed. It wasn’t any use doing that. The boys seemed to have one mind. I had suspected that but I found out today and it wasn’t any fun confirming that.
It seemed like they wouldn’t rest or get back till I was in my room. I sighed. What have I gotten myself into? I was almost regretting getting out of my room and meeting with the sorceress. Almost. I didn’t really regret it. My curiosity wouldn’t really let me regret.
It was good to know that there was something else in the world asides humans and werewolves. The more I got to know of their world, the more I was astonished.
We got to my room and Quinn carried me to the bed despite all my protests. What stubborn and silly brothers they were. I realized that they were being overprotective and that felt odd to me. What happened to the brothers who had almost watched me die?
I wondered what had gone wrong on the mission they had been on. They seemed changed and I couldn’t wait to see the expression on Albert’s face when he saw that they had gotten back home.
He had sent them on the mission to become matured and responsible men and it seemed like he had gotten his wish. They had grown up.
“Would you like some hot tea?” John asked as he regarded me with a worried look. “You are shaking.”
I winced. “I will be fine. It’s just the shock giving me chills. I should be fine in a moment.”
Jack chuckled. “I hope so. You seem like you can shake off the bed as you are at the moment.”
Quinn turned to him from where he was seated beside me and hissed. “Stop. Don’t tease her. She just had a death scare.”
Jack and John glanced at each other and burst out laughing. “Someone is getting softer.” Jack cackled.
I shook my head as I stared at the brothers, regarding them with caution.
“Why did you return?”
They had come just right in time as if they had known what was going to happen. Had the full moon given it out that something was going to happen tonight? I wanted to know if it was a coincidence or if they had suspected all along that I was going to be in danger.
I was still harboring feelings of resentment over the events from half a year ago but because of me as well, they had been sent on difficult sea voyages.
In the past six months I hadn’t seen them, they had become tanned and their bodies had become more robust, with well-defined muscles. I had to admit that they looked better than they did the last time I saw them. I had worried about them when Albert had threatened that they would be drilled on their mission but it seemed like they had enjoyed themselves.
I rolled my eyes at myself. Of course, it was the triplets. As long as they were together, they could make any condition favourable for themselves no matter how boring or strenuous it was. The real punishment that could shatter each of them would be separating them.
I appreciated their rescue this night but that didn’t mean that I wasn’t still wary of them. I didn’t think they would let me off easily. They would tease me about it and make sure that I knew how much I was indebted to them. They had frustrated me because I had saved my best friend then, I couldn’t imagine how much they would rub it in my face that they had saved me.
Quinn smiled at me, his expression as wary as mine was.
“We were actually planning to come home today. We called dad when it seemed like we were going to be late around nine in the night. You would have heard the call and our conversation with dad but it seemed like you had already fallen asleep then. We asked of you and he said that you had gone to your bedroom.” He explained, a wry smile on his lips.
His expression was blank but his eyes betrayed him. He was being careful of his reactions with me but he seemed to be laughing and teasing me for being asleep by nine. If only he knew that I wasn’t asleep at that time but only needed my privacy from mum and their dad.
Well, I also thought of giving them their privacy. I thought of telling him that and decided against it. What was the point of doing that?
“Thanks for saving me.” I said, watching as Quinn’s face lit up with amusement. He eventually nodded at me.
Jack also smiled, and he gently touched my hair in a playful manner. “Do you miss us, sister?”
I ignored him but he wouldn’t relent. “I know you said you didn’t miss us when we reconnected that time but you must surely miss us this time, Mia. After all, you are our sister and we did have some good memories the last time we were together unlike how we were in high school.”
I snorted. “I didn’t miss you. At all.” I replied, denying his claims.
He didn’t believe me. He crossed his arms and stared at me. “You don’t have a conscience, Mia.” He accused me but I could still detect the laughter in his voice. He was messing with me.
I sighed. I didn’t want to be teased by them. I only wanted them to leave my room or answer my questions about the sorceress, the bitch who had almost killed me.
Jack continued. “We missed you. It is not possible that we do not miss our stepsister for six months.” He claimed.
I didn’t believe him. I doubted that they missed me. They were only teasing me, messing with me as they used to do. Why did I ever think that they had changed?
“We missed you. Jack is right. Even Quinn did, as cold as he pretends to be.” John chimed in, agreeing with his brother.
Despite their playful banter, I couldn’t relax. I had to know. I had to get the burning burden off my mind. It wasn’t like I could sleep anyways. I had no doubt that I was going to be wide awake till daybreak so I might as well make some good use of it.
“Who is the woman in the basement?” I asked.
Quinn’s expression grew serious as he explained to me what she was. “That is not just any woman, Mia. She is the Dark Wizard. She has no gender and could live forever.”
I stared at him, wondering if I had heard him right. I was stunned by his revelation. The woman sounded like disaster and danger rolled into one on two legs and I was super glad again that the triplets had found when they did.
