Chapter 144
The path of decision
Sarah’s POV:
It felt scary as I got in.
I was afraid to my bone marrow as my mind raced with thoughts of my daughter’s safety.
I know the Syndicate will stop at nothing to silence me if I do not cooperate with them like we have been doing from the onset.
As I hear the sound of footsteps outside my cell, my heart begins to race. The door opens, and Detective James stands before me, a look of determination in his eyes.
“Sarah, I know you are still working with the Syndicate,” he says, his voice firm but measured.
“But I also know you’re a mother. And I’m willing to make a deal with you.” Detective James offered.
He pauses, his eyes locked on mine.
“Tell me the truth, and I will make sure your daughter is protected. But if you refuse, I will have no choice but to throw you leave you here, where the Syndicate will surely find out that you are not doing their job!” He threatens.
I feel a surge of fear rush through at his words. Can I trust him? Or is he just playing me? I look up at him, my eyes searching for any sign of deception.
And then, I make my decision. “I’ll tell you everything,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper. “But you have to promise me one thing: you have to keep my daughter safe.”
I took a closer look at him, and I laughed hysterically.
“You see I am as clueless as you are.” I said feigning seriousness.
“I don’t know what you are talking about,” I say, feigning confusion and innocence.
“I’m just a sergeant, doing my job as you asked me too. Ever since I got exposed, I do not know anything about the Syndicate or any illegal activities.” I said.
Detective James raises an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced.
“Don’t play dumb, Sarah. We have evidence. We know about the phone call. You are not as slick as you think you are.” James said almost raising his voice.
I shake my head, maintaining my charade.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I demand to see my lawyer. I know my rights. You can’t just keep me here without charging me.” I told him.
“A lawyer?” He asks.
Detective James sighs, his expression unyielding. “You’ll get your chance, Sarah to a state lawyer at least.” He says.
“But for now, you are going to sit here and think about your next move. Because one thing is certain… you are not going anywhere until we get to the bottom of this.” James insisted.
“And trust me, we will get to the bottom of it. You are not the first criminal to try to play dumb, and you won’t be the last. But we always get our man… or in this case, our woman.” He goes on.
“There is nothing else to say detective!” I responded seriously.
He turns to leave, but then stops and turns back to me.
“By the way, Sarah? You might want to think about your daughter’s well-being. You’re not the only one who knows about her, if you know what I mean.” He adds.
My heart skips a beat at the mention of my daughter, but I keep my expression neutral. I know he’s trying to get under my skin, but I won’t let him. I’ll keep playing dumb until the end, no matter what it takes.
After saying that I thought he’d leave but detective James stands there, hoping to get an answer from me.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I repeat, my voice steady and firm.
“If I did, i will tell you of everything you are supposed to hear. You would not even involve threats in this.” I reminded him.
Detective James shakes his head, a look of frustration on his face.
“Sarah, you are not making this easy for yourself. We have evidence, and we will use it to convict you. But if you cooperate, things might go easier for you.” He told me.
I laugh, a cold, hard sound.
“Cooperate? There is nothing to cooperate about. There is nothing to say detective!” I told him.
The detective’s expression turns grim.
“Fine, Sarah. Have it your way. But know this: we will break you. And when we do, you’ll wish you had cooperated.” He tells me.
He turns and leaves the room, leaving me alone in the cold, dark cell. But I’m not afraid. I’m still defiant, still determined to my daughter and my identity, no matter what it takes.
Hours passed with no one in sight, it was just me in this small room.
As the hours drag on, I pace back and forth in my cell, my mind racing with thoughts of my daughter’s safety.
I know the Syndicate will stop at nothing to silence me, and I’m terrified that they’ll harm her to get to me.
I fall to my knees, my eyes closed, and pray with every fiber of my being.
“Please, God, keep my daughter safe. Protect her from harm. Don’t let the Syndicate touch her. I’ll do anything, just keep her safe.” I begged God.
I pray for what feels like hours, my words pouring out in a desperate plea for mercy. I know I’ve made mistakes, I know I’ve done wrong, but my daughter doesn’t deserve to suffer for my sins.
As I pray, I feel a sense of peace wash over me, a sense of calm that I haven’t felt in hours. I know that God is listening, that He’s watching over my daughter, and that gives me the strength to keep going.
I stand up, my eyes dry, my heart still heavy with worry, but my spirit renewed.
I know that I’ll do whatever it takes to protect my daughter, even if it means sacrificing myself. I’ll fight to the end to keep her safe, no matter what the Syndicate throws my way.
I slowly drift into sleep, my mind begins to weave a tapestry of memories and emotions, transporting me to a realm where the boundaries of reality blur.
Then, my mind starts to dream. I’m in a beautiful meadow, surrounded by flowers that sway in the breeze. Then, I see my daughter Emily. She’s smiling and laughing, and her eyes are shining bright.
We play together in the meadow, chasing butterflies and hiding behind flowers. The sun shines down on us, and everything feels happy and perfect.
As the dream goes on, I start to remember special moments from our past. I see her taking her first steps, saying her first words, and going to school for the first time. Each memory makes me feel grateful for the love we share.
When the dream starts to fade, I feel a little sad. I don’t want to leave this happy place behind. But even as I wake up, I hold onto the love and joy that I felt in the dream. I know that no matter what, my love for Emily will always be with me.
