Alexander’s POV
“Emily can’t hold on any longer!” Ghost growled in my head, shoving me aside and seizing command of my physical form.
The sound of cracking bones filled the air, and gasps of shock and concern filled my surroundings.
The spectators abruptly and surprisingly retreated from me, sensing my unpredictability. The fear and horror in their eyes were visible to me.
“They appear as if they had just witnessed a ghost.” Ghost snickered and extended my arms in front of us. “Time to show the rest of the pack who we really are!”
Pack?
Was Ghost planning to subdue the other eight Alphas by forcing them to bow down to us?
Is he serious right now?
A few startled screams broke my stream of thought. However, the horrifying shrieks subsided before they could warn the rogues beneath.
“Sound boundary,” Ghost said proudly, throwing his head back and letting out a howl that was so strong it sent shivers down my spine and brought the pack to their knees.
“Son,” came my dad’s voice through the link. He was unable to even raise his eyes to meet mine. “Take control of yourself! You are frightening the pack and your mother!”
“I am unable to!” I replied as I felt an enormous amount of power erupting from a sleeping volcano deep within me and coursing through my veins.
A silent roar escaped my lips, sending a freezing wave of orders around me.
One by one, every Lycan beast answered the silent call and emerged into their true forms.
The werewolves trembled with fear. They were afraid. They never expected us to still roam the earth beside them.
“They should not fear us,” I told Ghost. “They are part of us! Welcome them!”
Ghost lets out another silent growl, sending shockwaves through the atmosphere that were aimed at the werewolves.
In response to his call, their werewolves transformed into magnificent, fierce, and beautiful beasts.
The wolves fell silent, and they slowly raised their heads to look at me.
Jax’s father stepped forward, his beast elegant and proud.
“Your Highness,” he uttered, lowering his head in submission. “We are here to serve you! We will do as you say and follow your orders.”
Without saying a word, Jax casually stepped forward and kneeled before me.
“Take what is needed,” his father said. “It will point you in the right direction.”
Jax nodded, his eyes almost pleading.
“He wants us to search his mind,” Ghost explained, opening his arms and allowing our magic to connect with him.
It was incredible!
In a matter of seconds, glimpses into Jax’s past materialized before my eyes, guiding me through a brief tour of his life.
I was able to experience every feeling, hear every sound, and even see clear pictures of everything Jax had ever touched or seen.
Ghost stopped for a moment at a memory of Jax and Mila on the day they discovered they were mates. The memory brought back strong feelings of joy and unwavering love, which made me think of my own feelings for Emily.
Ghost pressed on, paging through the memories like a page in a book, until a memory of Lex caught my attention-I only heard a hint of what he had to say.
“Do not tell Parker,” Lex firmly said, his expression serious. “She will not understand. She is not ready.”
I felt a chill run down my spine, and I attempted to stop Ghost, but he just pushed past the memory, not caring for the contents.
Was Jax keeping a secret from Emily?
Was it serious?
Was it life-threatening?
When we saw a few grainy scenes flash before our eyes, Ghost slowed his search. Though the images were distorted, sounds and murmurs could be heard.
“It appears as if Jax was drugged,” Ghost commented. “We must be near.”
Near what, exactly?
Before my eyes, an invisible map and trail began to take shape.
“Is that a blueprint of the building down below?” I asked, bewildered.
“I think so,” Ghost answered.
“But how?” I asked, unable to put into words what I was seeing. There was an incredible amount of detail; it looked like a snapshot taken just a moment ago, showing the locations of all the rooms and entrances.
Did Jax see the blueprints for the building?
“Jax has a photogenic memory,” Ghost explained. “Even when blindfolded, he retains the tiniest detail of his surroundings.”
“But that doesn’t make sense?” I argued. “His vision would be impaired if he were wearing a blindfold.”
“The vibrations around him leave a mark in his memory,” Ghost stated. “He will be able to remember what has happened around him even when he is unconscious.”
Is that the reason he acted strangely upon waking up? Has someone attempted to alter or tamper with his memory?
I moved on to take a look at the map.
“There are two main entrances.” Jax’s voice echoed around us.
“Have you?” I asked, and Ghost nodded.
“He will help us understand the place better, so I am letting him in,” he explained.
I nodded in understanding, yet I was still wary of Jax, but I trusted Ghost’s judgment.
“Which entrance was…?”
“This one,” Jax said, as he appeared beside me and pointed to the upper portion of the map. “After they were through erasing my memory, they carried me out there.”
“On what floor…?” I asked, unsure if Jax would be able to tell me.
“Basement,” he said, cutting me off. “I recalled the familiar scent when I was being moved through the hallway.”
Jax’s expression hardened, and his hands clenched into fists. He averted his gaze in an attempt to hide his true feelings.
“You were able to hear her cries?” I felt my heart shatter and my throat tighten as I whispered.
My poor mate must have suffered greatly.
Jax gave a dismissive shake of his head.
“No, Alpha,” he said. “However, I could sense her suffering radiating throughout the building. Even though she was in terrible pain, she remained silent.”
She also refrained from sharing any of her pain with the bond.
I let out a sigh, pulled myself together, and looked back at the map, a plan already forming in my mind.
When I opened my eyes, I was ready.
“It’s time!” Ghost bellowed, his voice piercing through everyone’s consciousness. “Let us put a stop to this and rescue our queen!”
