Chapter 125
The agreement.
Lily’s POV:
I took a deep breath and nodded my head in agreement.
“Okay, Sarah.” I said.
” I will work with you.” I said, trying to sound confident.
Sarah’s eyes lit up in relief and determination.
“Thank you, Lily. I promise you; we can get through this together.” Sarah said as she patted me.
But a part of me was finding it hard to work with Sarah.
“But she was once a police officer!” I thought as I stole a glance at her.
I hesitated for a moment, still unsure if I was making the right decision.
But something about Sarah’s words resonated with me.
Maybe it was her sincerity, or maybe it was the desperation in her eyes. Whatever it was, I knew I had to trust her.
“Okay,” I repeated, my voice firmer this time.
“Let’s do this.” I told her.
Sarah smiled, a small smile, but one that conveyed a sense of hope.
“Let’s get started then.” She said smiling.
All of a sudden Sarah called for my attention as her eyes locked onto mine, her expression serious.
“Lily, I need you to promise me something.” She said.
I raised an eyebrow, curious.
“What is it?” I asked her.
“Whatever information you get, whatever news you receive, don’t keep it to yourself.” Sarah asked earnestly.
“Share it with me, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.” She begged.
I hesitated, unsure if I was ready to make that promise. But Sarah’s intense gaze convinced me to nod in agreement.
“I promise,” I said as my voice firmed.
“I will share everything with you.” I told her.
Sarah’s face relaxed, a hint of relief washing over her features.
“Good. We need to be a team in this, Lily. We can’t afford to keep secrets from each other.” She added.
I nod, feeling a sense of solidarity with Sarah.
As I nodded in agreement, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that something wasn’t quite right.
Sarah’s words sounded sincere, but a tiny voice in my head whispered doubts.
Why was she so insistent on knowing every detail? What was she hiding behind that determined gaze?
I pushed the thoughts aside, telling myself I was just being paranoid.
But the feeling lingered, like a shadow in the corner of my mind.
But I also needed to get out of here! I thought.
“I’ll do it, no matter what. I’ll trust Sarah, no matter what. I have to see this through.” I heard myself whisper.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing thoughts. My mind was a jumble of doubts and fears, but I pushed them aside, focusing on the task at hand.
“I’ll do it,” I repeated, my voice barely audible.
“I’ll share the information, I’ll work with Sarah, and I’ll see this through to the end.” I said.
I was in this now, and I would see it through, no matter what secrets we might uncover, no matter what dangers we might face.
I steeled myself, preparing for what was to come. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I was ready. I would do this, no matter what.
I came back to take a nap when a felt a piece of paper brush through my hands as I picked it up to open.
My heart raced as I opened the letter, my hands shaking slightly, but I could not decipher why I was shaking.
The words blurred together on the page, but one sentence stood out.
“Don’t trust Sarah.” It said.
My mind reeled as I read the letter again, trying to process the warning. Kayla, whoever she was, seemed to know more about my situation than I did.
But why was she warning me about Sarah? Wasn’t Sarah my ally in this mysterious game?
I felt a chill run down my spine as I thought about all the times Sarah had been so insistent on knowing every detail, every piece of information I had. Was she playing me all along?
I couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease as I read the letter again, searching for any clues or hints. But there was nothing else, just that simple warning: “Don’t trust Sarah.”
What was I supposed to do now? Ignore the warning and continue working with Sarah? Or heed the warning and try to uncover the truth on my own?
My mind was a jumble of questions and doubts, and I knew I had to make a decision quickly. But what was the right choice?
Immediately, Sarah was at the door of my cell, that I shrieked on seeing her.
“What do you have there?” She said as she snatched the piece of paper from me.
Sarah’s eyes narrowed as she read the letter over my shoulder.
“This is just the syndicate trying to trick you, Lily,” she said, her voice firm.
“They are trying to drive a wedge between us, make you doubt me.” She told me.
I turned to her, searching for any sign of deception.
“How do I know this isn’t just you trying to cover your own tracks?” I asked, my voice cautious.
Sarah’s expression was unwavering.
“Because I have been telling you the truth from the start. I’m trying to help you, Lily. The syndicate is just trying to manipulate you.” Sarah said.
I hesitated, unsure of what to believe. Was Sarah telling the truth, or was this just another layer of deception?
But as I looked into her eyes, I saw something there that made me trust her. It was a glimmer of sincerity, a spark of genuine concern.
“Okay,” I said finally.
“I’ll trust you. But if I find out you’re lying to me, there will be consequences.” I said.
Sarah nodded; her face serious
. “I understand. Let’s keep working together and uncover the truth.” I told her and we went back to working together.
Together, we began to brainstorm, our minds racing with ideas and strategies. I could feel the tension between us, the weight of our situation, but I also felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, we could pull this off.
As we worked, I couldn’t help but think about how strange this was. Just a few days ago, I was trying to avoid Sarah at all costs. Now, we were working together, relying on each other for survival. Life was full of unexpected twists, and this was certainly one of them.
But I pushed aside my doubts and focused on the task at hand. We had a lot of work to do, and not a lot of time to waste. I was ready to put my trust in Sarah, and hope that she would come through for me.
As we continued to work together, I found myself watching her more closely, searching for any signs of deception. But Sarah’s expression remained steadfast, her eyes gleaming with a determination that was both convincing and unsettling.
I was trapped in a web of uncertainty, unsure if I was seeing a genuine ally in Sarah or a masterful manipulator. My mind raced with questions, but I had no answers, only the growing sense that I was walking a thin line between trust and treachery.
